You have <em>accounts<\/em> which comprise <em>containers<\/em>. Containers are split into <em>container versions<\/em>, and you use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/google-tag-manager-workspaces\/\"><em>workspaces<\/em><\/a> to create new versions. Phew! These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Containers created and deleted<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>User permissions created, modified, and deleted<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 848 \/ 215;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/account-activity-list.jpg\" title=\"Account Activity list\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"215\" width=\"848\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/account-activity-list.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Account Activity list\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Note that if you have \u201cNo Access\u201d as your permission level for any given container, you will not see its changes in this list.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"container-activity\">Container Activity<\/h3>\n<p><em>What it shows:<\/em> Container Version, Workspace, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/better-qa-with-google-tag-manager-environments\/\">Environment<\/a> activity.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find <strong>Container Activity<\/strong> under the Container column of GTM\u2019s Admin interface.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 435 \/ 317;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/container-activity.jpg\" title=\"Container Activity in Google Tag Manager\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"317\" width=\"435\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/container-activity.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Container Activity in Google Tag Manager\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Under Container Activity, you\u2019ll find:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 843 \/ 212;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/container-activity-list.jpg\" title=\"Container Activity List\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"212\" width=\"843\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/container-activity-list.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Container Activity List\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I think list is oddly lacking. There\u2019s nothing about Workspace creation nor anything about Container Version deletion. I\u2019d also like to see more granular changes, such as when an Environment link is reset.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"container-versions\">Container Versions<\/h3>\n<p><em>What it shows:<\/em> Container Versions, with details about when they were created and published.<\/p>\n<p>This should be a pretty familiar list. You\u2019ll find it by clicking <strong>Versions<\/strong> in the main navigation.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 437 \/ 123;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/versions.jpg\" title=\"Versions in Google Tag Manager\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"123\" width=\"437\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/versions.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Versions in Google Tag Manager\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the Versions list, you\u2019ll find:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Each Container Version, numbered in sequence<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Which Environment (if any) the Version is published to<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Who created the Version and (if published) who published it<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>When the Version was published<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Actions menu for the version<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1011 \/ 320;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/versions-list.jpg\" title=\"Versions List\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"320\" width=\"1011\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/versions-list.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Versions List\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Note also the <strong>Show deleted<\/strong> button in the top right corner. By clicking that you can see deleted container versions, and by choosing <strong>Undelete<\/strong> from the Actions menu you can, surprise surprise, undelete the respective container version.<\/p>\n<p>By clicking a version in this list, you will be taken to the dedicated page for debugging the changes with more detail (see below).<\/p>\n<p>I would really like to see the Workspace name from which the version was created here, too. It would help draw a line through container activity history from the version to the draft.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"version-changes--activity-history\">Version Changes \/ Activity History<\/h3>\n<p><em>What it shows:<\/em> <strong>Version Changes<\/strong> shows the list of assets (Tags, Triggers, Variables) that were modified in this Container Version. By clicking any one of these assets, you can see what changes were made between this version and what was then the Latest Version. <strong>Activity History<\/strong> gives you more information about <em>who<\/em> made the changes.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find these details by clicking any version either in the Versions list (see above) or from the Workspace Overview screen by clicking either \u201cLive Version\u201d or \u201cLatest Version\u201d.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1019 \/ 353;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/workspace-overview.jpg\" title=\"workspace overview\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"353\" width=\"1019\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/workspace-overview.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"workspace overview\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Under <strong>Version Changes<\/strong> you\u2019ll see:<\/p>\n<p>When clicking <strong>Activity History<\/strong> an overlay flies out with:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 679 \/ 307;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/version-changes-activity-history.jpg\" title=\"Version Changes and Activity History\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"307\" width=\"679\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/version-changes-activity-history.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Version Changes and Activity History\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Oddly enough, the Activity History doesn\u2019t tell you who created the container version itself. So only the Publish activity is enumerated in this list.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"workspace-changes\">Workspace Changes<\/h3>\n<p><em>What it shows:<\/em> List of assets that have been modified in this Workspace draft, when compared to the Latest Container Version.<\/p>\n<p>This is the list you\u2019ll see in the Workspace Overview screen.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1232 \/ 844;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/workspace-changes.jpg\" title=\"Workspace Changes\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"844\" width=\"1232\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/workspace-changes.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Workspace Changes\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This list will give you the following details:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>What assets were created, modified or deleted in this workspace<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Who made the changes and when<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>What the changes were compared to the Latest Container Version<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By clicking the dot menu at the end of each line, you can Abandon Changes you\u2019ve made to the asset, or you can View Changes, which lets you analyze what modifications were done compared to the Latest Container Version.<\/p>\n<p>Note that \u201cLast Edited\u201d is quite literal. Removing something isn\u2019t \u201cEditing\u201d, so in the list itself the \u201cLast Edited\u201d doesn\u2019t reflect the time when the asset was deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to read my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/google-tag-manager-workspaces\/\">Workspaces guide<\/a> for more information about debugging Workspace activity!<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"activity-history\">Activity History<\/h3>\n<p><em>What it shows:<\/em> A chronological list of changes to each asset. \u201cWorkspace Changes\u201d only has the latest state listed, but \u201cActivity History\u201d shows you previous states, too. Also, any changes to the Workspace itself (e.g. sync with Latest Container Version) are listed here.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find the link to Activity History just below Version Changes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 496 \/ 454;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/workspace-activity-history.jpg\" title=\"Workspace Activity History\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"454\" width=\"496\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/workspace-activity-history.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Workspace Activity History\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>When you click the link, an overly flies out with the following details:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Creation, deletion, modification, and restoration of individual assets<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Workspace synchronization<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Workspace creation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 894 \/ 233;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/workspace-activity-history-list.jpg\" title=\"Workspace Activity History List\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"233\" width=\"894\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2016\/09\/workspace-activity-history-list.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Workspace Activity History List\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>These are the \u201cobvious\u201d places for debugging activity in your Google Tag Manager domain. There are some glaring omissions (especially under Container Activity in Admin), but with the current tools you can already get pretty far in pinpointing who made what changes and when.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I miss from the pre-Workspace era is a master list of all changes to a container. So one place which puts all the above together, in chronological sequence. A sort of \u201cActivity History\u201d for the entire container, with all the details in one, long list. Right now there\u2019s a bit too much bouncing about the place if you\u2019re trying to align individual actions within the timeline of the entire container.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t an exhaustive list for debugging container activity.
