{"id":125897,"date":"2025-03-11T08:11:47","date_gmt":"2025-03-11T08:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/legal\/us-added-to-list-of-countries-experiencing-serious-decline-in-civic-freedoms-jurist\/"},"modified":"2025-03-11T08:11:47","modified_gmt":"2025-03-11T08:11:47","slug":"us-added-to-list-of-countries-experiencing-serious-decline-in-civic-freedoms-jurist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=125897","title":{"rendered":"US added to list of countries experiencing &#8216;serious decline&#8217; in civic freedoms &#8211; JURIST"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>International civil rights organization CIVICUS on Monday added the US to its <a href=\"https:\/\/monitor.civicus.org\/watchlist-march-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monitor Watchlist<\/a> of countries experiencing a decline in civic freedoms due to executive overreach.<\/p>\n<p>CIVICUS said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/monitor.civicus.org\/watchlist-march-2025\/USA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> that the decision comes after the Trump administration\u2019s recent \u201cassault on democratic norms and global cooperation,\u201d and that the administration\u2019s actions have \u201cseverely impact[ed] constitutional freedoms.\u201d CIVICUS interim co-secretary-gGeneral Mandeep Tiwana stated that Trump\u2019s actions were aimed at undoing the \u201csystem of checks and balances which are the pillars of a democratic society.\u201d The organization also cited concerns over the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2025\/02\/federal-judge-blocks-trumps-mass-firings-at-consumer-watchdog-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mass firings<\/a> of government employees, appointing \u201cTrump loyalists\u201d to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2025\/03\/un-human-rights-expert-condemns-trump-retaliation-against-justice-officials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Justice<\/a> and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2025\/02\/us-senate-confirms-kash-patel-for-fbi-director-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Bureau of Investigation<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2025\/03\/un-world-food-program-closes-southern-africa-office-amid-us-aid-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismantling<\/a> of US international initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>CIVICUS has expressed growing concern over the Trump administration\u2019s latest restrictions on <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-1\/\">free speech<\/a> rights, stating in its <a href=\"https:\/\/monitor.civicus.org\/watchlist-march-2025\/USA\/\">press release<\/a> that White House authorities continue to deny media outlets\u2014such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2025\/02\/us-judge-denies-to-restore-the-associated-press-access-to-presidential-events\/\">Associated Press<\/a>\u2014access to presidential briefings. CIVICUS also took aim at the Trump administration\u2019s \u201ccrackdown\u201d on pro-Palestine activists, arguing that its cancellation of protestors\u2019 student visas and reinstatement of a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/additional-measures-to-combat-anti-semitism\/\">executive order<\/a> are intended to \u201crepress\u201d Palestine activism.<\/p>\n<p>CIVICUS <a href=\"https:\/\/monitor.civicus.org\/globalfindings_2024\/\">ranks<\/a> on a five-point scale each country\u2019s civic space conditions which are \u201copen,\u201d \u201cnarrowed,\u201d \u201cobstructed,\u201d \u201crepressed\u201d or \u201cclosed.\u201d While CIVICUS determined that the US currently has a \u201cnarrowed\u201d civic space designation on its watchlist, the organization warned that continued crackdowns on dissent and press freedoms could lead to further deterioration into its \u201cobstructed,\u201d \u201crepressed,\u201d or \u201cclosed\u201d classifications. The US\u2019s \u201cnarrowed\u201d ranking means that people living in the country can still exercise civic freedoms \u2014 such as association, peaceful assembly, and expression\u2014but that government authorities can still violate these rights.
