The policy change allows the search giant leeway to ban ads on certain pages or to block an entire website from its advertising platform.<\/p>\n<p>Google already bans from its ad network websites publishing medical misinformation that can harm others. This new policy expands that to include broader COVID-19 conspiracies, such as ones spreading misinfo about possible vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are putting additional safeguards in place by expanding our harmful health claims policies for both publishers and advertisers to include dangerous content about a health crisis that contradicts scientific consensus,\u201d said a Google spokesperson in a statement.<\/p>\n<section x-data=\"window.newsletter()\" x-init=\"init()\" class=\"relative p-8 my-12 mx-auto w-full max-w-3xl border md:p-12 md:my-16 border-secondary-300\" data-ga-impression=\"\" data-ga-category=\"newsletters\" data-ga-module=\"incontent_nl_signup\" data-ga-label=\"mashablelightspeed\">\n<p>\n            Mashable Light Speed\n        <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>Along with many other tech companies, Google has struggled to maintain balance with content concerning the global pandemic. Earlier in 2020, the search engine <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/big-tech-coronavirus-ad-policies\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>banned<\/u><\/a> non-governmental advertisers from running ads on its network. <\/p>\n<p>The Google-owned YouTube also made it difficult for creators to monetize coronavirus-related videos. The company originally <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/coronavirus-youtube-monetization\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>classified<\/u><\/a> COVID-19 as a \u201csensitive topic\u201d which is company policy in order to stop people from capitalizing off of delicate breaking events. This policy also helps keep brands\u2019 advertisements off potentially inappropriate content.<\/p>\n<p>As the coronavirus shifted from a potential problem to a full-on pandemic affecting everyday life in the U.S., YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/youtube-coronavirus-monetization\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>revised<\/u><\/a> its policies in order to let more creators monetize COVID-19 content. Google also <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/coronavirus-youtube-monetization\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>changed<\/u><\/a> its policies which limited who can run coronavirus-related search ads.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex mx-auto mt-8 w-full max-w-3xl font-sans text-lg leading-normal md:text-xl md:leading-7\">\n        <span class=\"font-bold text-primary-400\">SEE ALSO:<\/span><br \/>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/in.mashable.com\/article\/covid-19-data-cdc-website-trump\" class=\"flex items-center text-secondary-300\"><br \/>\n            <span class=\"ml-1\">Trump administration strips some COVID-19 data from CDC website<\/span><br \/>\n            <svg class=\"ml-1 w-4 h-4 font-normal fill-current\"><use href=\"http:\/\/in.mashable.com\/images\/icons\/spritemap.svg#sprite-arrow-right-thin\"\/><\/svg><br \/>\n        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<p>However, Google and <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-covid-19-who-myths\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>other tech companies<\/u><\/a> are making it clear that they still won\u2019t stand for harmful conspiracy theories and misinformation about the pandemic. Facebook, for example, has been promoting the World Health Organization\u2019s website to users who like coronavirus conspiracies. Instagram has even <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/instagram-bestmemes-coronavirus-scam\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>banned<\/u><\/a> users who pushed fake COVID-related schemes.<\/p>\n<p>Google has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-07-17\/google-to-ban-more-ads-from-sites-promoting-virus-conspiracies\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>removed<\/u><\/a> more than 200 million coronavirus-related ads that went against its policies.
