A couple of years ago I wrote an article<\/a> on tracking interactions with the SoundCloud<\/a> widget via Google Tag Manager<\/a>. When a platform provides a JavaScript embed API, it\u2019s surprisingly easy to track interactions with the player. You\u2019ve seen this with YouTube<\/a>, with SoundCloud, with JWPlayer<\/a>, and now you\u2019ll see how to do this with the Mixcloud<\/a> player.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t know what Mixcloud is, well it\u2019s a hugely popular streaming service for DJs, podcasts, radio shows, and other published radio media. Since they offer a handy embed solution<\/a> for any show you like, it makes sense to start tracking if people are actually using the widget, right?<\/p>\n

How to set it up<\/h2>\n

First, you need to add the player widget to your site. To do this, select the show you want to embed, and click the Share button<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

An overlay should open with both a Share<\/strong> and an Embed<\/strong> option. Choose the latter.<\/p>\n

Setup the player visuals however you wish. Once you\u2019re done, uncheck the box next to WordPress<\/strong>, after which the text box should contain an iframe<\/code> embed tag.<\/p>\n

This iframe<\/code> tag is what you need to add to your website. It\u2019s important that you use the exact format provided, so that the JavaScript API works without any problems.<\/p>\n

One thing you\u2019ll want to add to the tag, however, is a unique ID<\/strong> attribute. This makes it MUCH easier to target the correct player. So, if the iframe<\/code> looks like this:<\/p>\n

The Google Tag Manager Custom HTML Tag<\/h2>\n
The whole tracking solution is contained within a single Custom HTML Tag. So, create a new Custom HTML Tag, and add the following code within:<\/p>\n

Set this tag to fire on a Page View \/ DOM Ready<\/strong> trigger, and if you only want to fire this on certain pages, you can modify the trigger accordingly. Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n

How it works<\/h2>\n
This tracker adds a listener to the given player for all the events you specified in the events<\/code> Array. Whenever such an event is registered by the page, a dataLayer.push()<\/code> takes place with the following structure:<\/p>\n

As you can see, the progress<\/code> event measures how far along the show the user is. It has triggers for 25%<\/code>, 50%<\/code> and 75%<\/code>. I didn\u2019t add one for 100%<\/code>, as the ended<\/code> event is the same thing.<\/p>\n
Triggers and variables<\/h2>\n
Next thing you\u2019ll need to do is create a Custom Event trigger for the mixcloud<\/code> event. It\u2019s dead easy, and the trigger should look like this:<\/p>\n

Finally, you\u2019ll need three Data Layer variables. One for mixcloudEvent.name<\/code>, one for mixcloudEvent.key<\/code>, and one for mixcloudEvent.progress<\/code>.<\/p>\n

Now you should have everything you need to start tracking interactions with the widget.<\/p>\n

For example, when a progress<\/code> event for hitting the half-way mark is recorded, the event would look like this:<\/p>\n

You can make it even more versatile with Custom Dimensions and Custom Metrics.<\/p>\n
Summary<\/h2>\n
This was (hopefully) a simple tip to get you along with Mixcloud player tracking. With a robust JavaScript API it really is easy to do.<\/p>\n
The Mixcloud JavaScript API works with promises, so the functional approach exhibited in the Custom HTML Tag might look messy, and as such, there is room for improvement via refactoring.<\/p>\n
If you have more than one widget on the page that you want to track, you\u2019ll need to duplicate the relevant code for each player on the page. For example:<\/p>\n
