It was the one trick-or-treating stop my mom couldn\u2019t resist joining me at, and we\u2019d each walk away with a popcorn ball\u2014or two if we were lucky.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"110\" data-end=\"402\">Fast forward to today, I still enjoy popcorn balls. Why?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"110\" data-end=\"402\"><strong>They\u2019re easier to make<\/strong>: Corn syrup-based popcorn balls require temperature cooking accuracy. Marshmallow-based popcorn balls do not. You just melt the ingredients and mix them all up. Plus, you can make a batch in less than 20 minutes.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"110\" data-end=\"402\"><strong style=\"font-size: revert;\">They\u2019re easier to eat<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">: Marshmallow-based popcorn balls stick together. You can pull off some of <\/span>the<span style=\"font-size: revert;\"> popcorn ball and it won\u2019t fall apart. <\/span>Karo syrup-based popcorn balls tend to crumble and get messy.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"110\" data-end=\"402\"><span style=\"font-size: revert;\"><strong>They taste better<\/strong>: I personally prefer popcorn balls with a marshmallow base because they\u2019re gooey, buttery, and sweet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For all these reasons, I stick to marshmallow-based popcorn balls. See below for more about why I recommend purchasing bagged popcorn instead of popping your own.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: revert;\">Marshmallows<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">: You can use mini marshmallows, large marshmallows, or giant marshmallows \u2013 they\u2019re all the same. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: revert;\">Butter: <\/strong>Regular salted butter works well for this recipe. If you\u2019re using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to the marshmallow mixture to enhance the sweet\/salty balance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optional add-ins<\/strong>: I like to add some M&amp;Ms to my popcorn balls. You could try adding gum drops or salted peanuts as well. You really don\u2019t want to break a tooth when eating a popcorn ball!<\/p>\n<p>Also, store-bought salted popcorn is generally good tasting, fresh, and high quality. Homemade popcorn can turn stale or mushy depending on the popping method. You also run the risk of burning it.<\/p>\n<p>My recommendation? Use bagged salted popcorn for consistent results.
