Afterwards, he was given a police escort to the Freedom Monument in Riga\u2019s city center for a late-night rally, where hundreds of people braved near-freezing temperatures to hear various speeches and music performances. County). The film, titled <em>Straume<\/em> in Latvian, recorded over 320,000 admissions in his home country, more than any other film in the last 30 years. When Zilbalodis won the Golden Globe in January, the statue was displayed in the Latvian National Museum of Art where it was viewed by nearly 16,000 people. And the film\u2019s black cat has become something of a city mascot; a three-dimensional sculpture of it now sits atop the letters RIGA in what has become a photo spot near the Freedom Monument. <\/p>\n<p>Latvia\u2019s president Edgars Rink\u0113vi\u010ds not only <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/edgarsrinkevics\/status\/1896397600905163009\" target=\"_blank\">congratulated Zilbalodis on his Oscar win<\/a> but shared a photo of himself in front of the <em>Flow<\/em> sculpture: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"lv\" dir=\"ltr\">Nenotur\u0113jos. Additionally, Zilbalodis\u2019 studio Dream Well was awarded 300,000 euros by the Cabinet of Ministers for winning the Golden Globe, and an additional 150,000 euros has been set aside for marketing Latvian animation internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Zilbalodis, the country hosts other well known animation filmmakers who stand to benefit from the government\u2019s new enthusiasm for animation, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonbrew.com\/tag\/vladimir-leschiov\" target=\"_blank\">Vladimir Leschiov<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonbrew.com\/tag\/edmunds-jansons\" target=\"_blank\">Edmunds Jansons<\/a>, not to mention numerous other Latvian animators who have gained recognition abroad, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonbrew.com\/feature-film\/my-love-affair-with-marriage-signe-baumane-217458.html\" target=\"_blank\">Signe Baumane<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonbrew.com\/tag\/anete-melece\" target=\"_blank\">Anete Melece<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonbrew.com\/interviews\/from-soviet-oppression-to-annecy-success-the-story-of-my-favorite-war-194216.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ilze Burkovska-Jacobsen<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Time will tell what kind of impact Zilbalodis\u2019 international success will have on the country\u2019s overall animation scene, but one thing is for certain: <em>Flow<\/em> has put Latvian animation on the map and created the country\u2019s first animation celebrity.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flow director Gints Zilbalodis received a hero\u2019s welcome when he returned to his native Latvia yesterday after winning the country\u2019s first-ever Academy Award.
