Here\u2019s a walkthrough using an actual example.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you have an order receipt page on your ecommerce store, where you have implemented the following <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-manager\/enhanced-ecommerce#purchases\">Enhanced Ecommerce<\/a> <code>purchase<\/code> setup:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer = <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer || [];\n<span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer.push({\n  event: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'ecommerce'<\/span>,\n  ecommerce: {\n    purchase: {\n      actionField: {\n        id: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'order1'<\/span>,\n        revenue: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'10.00'<\/span>\n      },\n      products: [{\n        id: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'product1'<\/span>,\n        price: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'6.00'<\/span>,\n        quantity: <span style=\"color:#099\">1<\/span>\n      },{\n        id: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'product2'<\/span>,\n        price: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'4.00'<\/span>,\n        quantity: <span style=\"color:#099\">1<\/span>\n      }]\n    }\n  }\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you know your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/enhanced-ecommerce-tips-and-learnings\/\">Enhanced Ecommerce<\/a>, this code represents a well-formed purchase object, and if you have an Enhanced Ecommerce enabled tag firing on an <code>ecommerce<\/code> Custom Event Trigger, you should be able to collect this purchase data in your Universal Analytics property.<\/p>\n<p>But now we have a pixel (such as Facebook), which requires an Array of <em>only<\/em> the product IDs (i.e. <code>['product1', 'product2']<\/code>. Or, you might have a tracker, which requires a comma-separated string of the same (i.e. <code>'product1,product2'<\/code>].<\/p>\n<p>First, you\u2019ll need to create a <strong>Data Layer Variable<\/strong> which points to the <em>Array that holds the objects whose properties you want to access<\/em>. In this case, it would be <code>ecommerce.purchase.products<\/code>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 666 \/ 618;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/07\/data-layer-variable-products.jpg\" title=\"Data Layer Variable products\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"618\" width=\"666\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/07\/data-layer-variable-products.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Data Layer Variable products\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I\u2019ve chosen to name this <strong>{{DLV &#8211; ecommerce.purchase.products}}<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you\u2019ll need a Custom JavaScript Variable where the magic happens. This variable returns an <strong>Array<\/strong> of all the product IDs (i.e. <code>['product1', 'product2']<\/code>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> products = {{DLV - ecommerce.purchase.products}};\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">return<\/span> products.reduce(<span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(arr, prod) { <span style=\"color:#00a\">return<\/span> arr.concat(prod.id); }, []);\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <code>reduce()<\/code> method basically takes an Array (the <code>products<\/code> Array), and for every member in the Array you can choose to increment an accumulator (an empty Array in this case) with the data of your choice. In this case, we\u2019re taking the <code>id<\/code> value from every item in the Array, and building a new Array with this information.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to turn this into a <strong>comma-separated string<\/strong> (i.e. <code>'product1,product2'<\/code>), you only need to chain another Array method to the <code>return<\/code> statement:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> products = {{DLV - ecommerce.purchase.products}};\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">return<\/span> products.reduce(<span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(arr, prod) { <span style=\"color:#00a\">return<\/span> arr.concat(prod.id); }, []).join();\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <code>join()<\/code> method flattens any Array into a string, using whatever you pass into the parentheses as the separator.
