This is particularly the case when the selection immediately does something, such as initiate a download or navigate the user to another page. But even if there is no immediate action, it\u2019s still interesting to know what selections users might be doing, if only to uncover yet another piece of the engagement puzzle. But the end result is that when a user makes a selection, the web page pushes an object into <code>dataLayer<\/code>, which you can then use to track the results.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what the <strong>Custom HTML Tag<\/strong> should look like:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-html\" data-lang=\"html\">script&gt;\n  (<span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n    \n    <span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\">\/\/ Change the CSS selector in the parenthesis to match your select menu\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\"\/>    <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> selectMenu = <span style=\"color:#0aa\">document<\/span>.querySelector(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'select#selectMenu'<\/span>);\n    \n    <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> callback = <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(e) {\n      <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> selectedOption = e.target.options[e.target.selectedIndex];\n      <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer.push({\n        event: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'selectionMade'<\/span>,\n        selectedElement: selectedOption\n      });\n    };\n    \n    selectMenu.addEventListener(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'change'<\/span>, callback, <span style=\"color:#00a\">true<\/span>);\n  })();\n<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Set this tag to fire on a <strong>DOM Ready<\/strong> trigger.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to modify the line which begins with <code>var selectMenu = ...<\/code>, so that the query selector matches the select HTML element you actually want to track. If CSS selectors are unfamiliar to you, you can read up on them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/10-useful-css-selectors\/\">here<\/a>, or you can use some other DOM method like <code>document.getElementById()<\/code>. Regardless, you will need to store a reference to the <code>select<\/code> element in the <code>selectMenu<\/code> variable for this solution to work.<\/p>\n<p>The code creates a custom <code>'change'<\/code> listener, which is triggered when the value in the element being monitored changes. This is very useful with forms, since you can attach this type of listener to any form field to see if the user changed the value within.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, when a <code>'change'<\/code> event is detected, the callback pushes an object into <code>dataLayer<\/code>, which contains the custom event <code>selectionMade<\/code> as well as an object reference to the option the user selected.<\/p>\n<p>When you want to fire your tag upon a selection, you will need a Custom Event Trigger that looks like this:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 874 \/ 598;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/08\/custom-event-trigger.jpg\" title=\"Custom Event Trigger\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"598\" width=\"874\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/08\/custom-event-trigger.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Custom Event Trigger\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Then, depending on how the actual <code>option<\/code> element has been configured, you could use one of these Data Layer Variables to collect the information:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 668 \/ 620;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/08\/selected-value.jpg\" title=\"Selected element value\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"620\" width=\"668\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/08\/selected-value.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Selected element value\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 662 \/ 618;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/08\/selected-innerhtml.jpg\" title=\"selected element innerHTML\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"618\" width=\"662\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/08\/selected-innerhtml.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"selected element innerHTML\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first grabs the <code>value<\/code> attribute from the selected option, or if there is no <code>value<\/code> it grabs the text content.
