Now the airline has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.united.com\/en\/us\/newsroom\/announcements\/cision-125370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revealed an exciting update<\/a>, as Starlink has just been installed on the first aircraft. This will be a game changer for United, once available on a widespread basis.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-united-airlines-will-have-starlink-wi-fi-on-1-000-jets\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"united_airlines_will_have_starlink_wi-fi_on_1000_jets\"\/>United Airlines will have Starlink Wi-Fi on 1,000+ jets<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>United Airlines has signed an agreement with SpaceX, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.united.com\/en\/us\/fly\/travel\/inflight\/starlink-internet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduce Starlink Wi-Fi<\/a> on more than 1,000 aircraft. This is the largest Starlink deal we\u2019ve seen with an airline to date.<\/p>\n<p>Best of all, United plans to offer Starlink Wi-Fi for free to all MileagePlus members. That\u2019s not surprising, when you consider that <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/united-catches-up-delta-financial-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United is increasingly in Delta\u2019s league<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/guides\/delta-free-wi-fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delta is offering fast and free Wi-Fi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink is known for its high-speed, low-latency broadband internet, and the service will be offered gate to gate. United highlights how Starlink Wi-Fi will allow for live streaming, productivity similar to on the ground (with high upload and download speeds), gaming, e-commerce, support for multiple devices, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink is becoming increasingly popular on airlines. So far we\u2019ve seen carriers like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/airbaltic-free-wi-fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">airBaltic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/air-france-free-starlink-wi-fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air France<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/air-new-zealand-free-starlink-wi-fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air New Zealand<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/hawaiian-airlines-free-starlink-wi-fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hawaiian Airlines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/qatar-airways-free-starlink-wi-fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Qatar Airways<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/westjet-free-starlink-wi-fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WestJet<\/a>, all announce plans to install the service.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s also great about Starlink is that the installation process is pretty quick, once aircraft are certified to have it installed. The average Starlink installation time is around eight hours, which is 10 times as fast as with non-Starlink equipment.<\/p>\n<p>United is by far the most tech-savvy US airline, and I\u2019d be willing to bet that the airline invests more in technology than peers. So it\u2019s fitting that United would also go with the most cutting edge Wi-Fi provider. This would also explain why United didn\u2019t announce a larger Wi-Fi retrofit plan with one of the more established inflight Wi-Fi providers prior to the recent announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how United CEO Scott Kirby describes this development:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEverything you can do on the ground, you\u2019ll soon be able to do onboard a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world. This connectivity opens the door for an even better inflight entertainment experience, in every seatback \u2013 more content, that\u2019s more personalized. United\u2019s culture of innovation is, once again, delivering big for our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here\u2019s how United MileagePlus CEO Richard Nunn describes this:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot planned for our MileagePlus members this year and adding Starlink to as many planes as we can \u2013 as quickly as we can \u2013 is at the center of it all. United expects to offer Starlink Wi-Fi on 1,000+ planes, including mainline aircraft and regional jets.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1019006\/OMAAT_InContent --><\/p>\n<p>United plans to first offer Starlink Wi-Fi on its regional jets. Starlink Wi-Fi has just been installed on the first United Express Embraer E175, starting a trial phase for the service on the plane. The plan is that starting in May 2025, United plans to install Starlink Wi-Fi on 40+ United Express planes each month, with the entire Embraer regional fleet expected to have the service by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no timeline beyond that as of now, other than that the entire fleet will get Starlink Wi-Fi \u201cover the next several years.\u201d So it sounds like we shouldn\u2019t expect any mainline United jets to get this service before either very late 2025 or early 2026. Either way, the fact that all two-cabin regional jets will get Starlink before the end of 2025 is super impressive.<\/p>\n<p>For some context on United\u2019s Wi-Fi situation, the airline currently uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.united.com\/ual\/en\/us\/fly\/travel\/inflight\/wifi-coverage-maps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four different Wi-Fi providers<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The regional jets have Intelsat Wi-Fi (formerly known as Gogo)<\/li>\n<li>Most wide body jets, plus select A319s, A320s, and 757s, have Panasonic Wi-Fi<\/li>\n<li>Most non-MAX 737s have Thales Wi-Fi<\/li>\n<li>Most 737 MAX aircraft, A321neos, and select A319s, have Viasat Wi-Fi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/United-Polaris-Business-Class-777-18.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-323791\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">It\u2019ll take years before all planes have Starlink<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bottom-line\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bottom_line\"\/>Bottom line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>United Airlines plans to introduce free Starlink Wi-Fi throughout its fleet. United has been lagging American and Delta when it comes to inflight connectivity, so this will be a massively positive change.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink Wi-Fi is first being installed on United Express regional jets, with the entire regional jet fleet expected to get Wi-Fi before the end of 2025. After that, we\u2019ll see Starlink Wi-Fi installed on mainline aircraft, though the timeline on that isn\u2019t entirely clear.<\/p>\n<p>Over the coming years, we should see Starlink Wi-Fi installed on over 1,000 aircraft, though as you can tell, that\u2019ll require some patience.
