So this<br \/>\nweek for the sport\u2019s 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary I\u2019ll AmericanStudy a handful<br \/>\nof hockey histories, leading up to a weekend post on some SportsStudiers we can<br \/>\nall learn from!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">On three<br \/>\ntelling and compelling layers to that first organized game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">1)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nsshf.com\/inductee\/james-creighton\/\">James Creighton<\/a>: Railway<br \/>\nengineer and lawyer Creighton is known as the father of organized hockey, as he<br \/>\ncertainly didn\u2019t invent the sport itself (compared for example to <a href=\"https:\/\/americanstudier.blogspot.com\/2016\/12\/december-12-2016-basketballs-birthday.html\">James<br \/>\nNaismith<\/a> and basketball); an informal, outdoor version known as both hockey<br \/>\nand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purehockey.com\/c\/what-is-shinny-or-pick-up-hockey\">\u201cshinny\u201d<\/a><br \/>\nwas already being played on frozen ponds in the 1850s Nova Scotia of Creighton\u2019s<br \/>\nyouth. But as I discussed with baseball\u2019s 19<sup>th<\/sup> century evolution in <a href=\"https:\/\/americanstudier.podbean.com\/\">my recent podcast<\/a> (the Third<br \/>\nInning in particular), it took a while for that local, community version of the<br \/>\nsport to become organized, and a key step in that process was Creighton<br \/>\ngathering groups of players (many from nearby McGill University) and providing<br \/>\nsticks for workouts at <a href=\"https:\/\/provincequebec.com\/montreal\/victoria-skating-rink\/\">Montreal\u2019s Victoria<br \/>\nSkating Rink<\/a> in the early 1870s (he knew the rink from his work there as a judge<br \/>\nfor figure skating competitions). After years of practicing together, those<br \/>\nplayers were finally ready to put on a full, organized game, with Creighton captaining<br \/>\nthe Montreal Football Club against the Rink\u2019s home team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">2)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">The Game: The pre-game <a href=\"https:\/\/thepinkpuck.com\/2019\/03\/03\/this-day-in-hockey-history-march-3-1875-montreal-brings-in-hockey\/\">announcement<br \/>\nin the <i>Montreal Gazette<\/i><\/a> noted a specific change that would significantly<br \/>\nreshape the sport\u2019s future: \u201cSome fears have been expressed on the part of<br \/>\nintending spectators that accidents were likely to occur with the ball flying<br \/>\nabout in too lively a manner, to the imminent danger of lookers on, but we<br \/>\nunderstand that the game will be played with a flat circular piece of wood,<br \/>\nthus preventing all danger of its leaving the surface of the ice.\u201d That<br \/>\naddition of the puck would be more than enough to make this 1875 game a true<br \/>\norigin point for the sport (with shinny\/pond hockey, which uses a ball, almost<br \/>\na distinct sport in its own right that likewise endures to this day), but the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/the-gazette-first-organized-hockey-game\/150289414\/\">Gazette<span style=\"font-style: normal;\">\u2019s follow-up report<\/span><\/a><\/i> on the game makes<br \/>\nclear that its play was also quite representative of how the sport would<br \/>\nevolve, as exemplified by the phrase \u201cthe efforts of the players exciting much<br \/>\nmerriment as they wheeled and dodged each other.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">3)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/first-indoor-game-of-ice-hockey\">The<br \/>\nMelee<\/a>: Of course, hockey players don\u2019t always dodge each other, and their<br \/>\nhits aren\u2019t limited to in-play collisions. I\u2019ll write more in tomorrow\u2019s post<br \/>\nabout the overall history and place of fighting in the sport, but it\u2019s pretty<br \/>\ntelling that this first organized game likewise concluded with an extended<br \/>\nbrawl. The fact that this fight wasn\u2019t just between players\u2014instead, players<br \/>\nfrom both teams apparently brawled with Victoria Skating Club members who were angry<br \/>\nthat the rink had been used for this purpose\u2014only reiterates how much fighting was<br \/>\npart of hockey\u2019s collective DNA from the outset.
