But today\u2019s outing saw me heading to my local <a href=\"https:\/\/fiveguys.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Five Guys<\/a> restaurant to explore how much land our lunch requires\u2026<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bucket.mlcdn.com\/a\/1855\/1855594\/images\/9212592acd677b92e54bb637f92955e3f3fd68b8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Five Guys Feast for my Five Solutions<\/h2>\n<p>When I began reading about the impact food has on the planet, what astonished me most was <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/land-use-diets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how much land is used to feed us all<\/a>. Agriculture is <em>generally<\/em> terrible for nature (not always), so the less land we farm, the better.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bucket.mlcdn.com\/a\/1855\/1855594\/images\/cc21cd43ff306f09b2a23152b63ab5ec4cdc018e.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>So What?<\/h2>\n<p>But what does this mean? Why does it matter? Let\u2019s now turn to a different meal I often cook at home or order in Chinese restaurants: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/wDQjc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mapo Tofu<\/a> with rice.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bucket.mlcdn.com\/a\/1855\/1855594\/images\/ec4a562bb7628aa277488c5f639680df675bf528.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how much farmland is needed to make this, washed down with a glass of oat milk.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bucket.mlcdn.com\/a\/1855\/1855594\/images\/cc21cd43ff306f09b2a23152b63ab5ec4cdc018e.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>A Stunning Realisation<\/h2>\n<p>The area marked out in chalk was the area of farmland needed for my first meal.<\/p>\n<p>The area of the <em>table alone<\/em> is all that is needed to produce this second meal.<\/p>\n<p>However, to ensure a fair comparison, I needed to match the calories and protein. That meant I could produce <em>multiple<\/em> plates of Mapo Tofu for the same land area.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bucket.mlcdn.com\/a\/1855\/1855594\/images\/9243ec389f8e464fc233195f1d58e8b1f9b5a19c.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>I was astonished when I realised that just changing my lunch could free up so much space for nature and rewilding while still filling me up, keeping me healthy, tasting delicious, and saving me money.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can learn more about the land requirements of different foods <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/land-use-diets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Boring but Important Disclaimers<\/h3>\n<p>* I kept things simple, looking only at beef, bacon, cheese, bread, and milk.
