When Kate Mead co-founded Wyoming Whiskey in 2006 with her husband, Brad, and co-founder David DeFazio, she was already breaking barriers\u2014as a lawyer, a rancher, and now a whiskey maker. Wyoming\u2019s first legal distillery, located in Kirby, has since grown into a nationally recognized brand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout her career, Kate has championed women in traditionally male industries, helping others rise alongside her. From hiring female blenders to fostering mentorship, she\u2019s proving that whiskey isn\u2019t just a man\u2019s world. This <\/span>Women\u2019s History Month<\/span><\/a>, Kate reflects on the progress made\u2014and the barriers that still remain for women in whiskey and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Reality of Gender Barriers in Ranching and Whiskey\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

For much of her professional life, Kate Mead has worked in industries where men dominate the landscape\u2014law, ranching, and now whiskey. While she once believed gender equality would be a given by now, her experiences have shown otherwise. \u201cI really felt like there would be no need to have special months for women\u2019s history because there would be equity,\u201d she says. \u201cBut it\u2019s been pretty obvious to me as I age that we\u2019re not quite there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In ranching, she recalls a worker refusing to ride the range with her because his wife \u201cwould never countenance it.\u201d In whiskey, she noticed stark gender divisions early on. \u201cMost distributors had women as receptionists, but few on the sales teams or executive boards,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was more segregated, in my view, than law or even ranching was.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite these challenges, Kate credits her resilience to the mentorship of Brad\u2019s mother, a formidable rancher who ran the family operation alone. \u201cShe was tough as nails and really tough on me, but it was good,\u201d Kate reflects. \u201cIt set me up to understand just how difficult it can be for women. Women in any industry have to have thick skin. You have to stand up for yourself.\u201d That experience prepared her for a trailblazing career in whiskey\u2014where she\u2019s now ensuring other women get the opportunities she once had to fight for.<\/span><\/p>\n

Championing Women in the Whiskey Industry at Wyoming Whiskey<\/span><\/h2>\n

Kate has always believed in recognizing talent, regardless of gender. At Wyoming Whiskey, she has made it a priority to elevate women within the industry, ensuring that opportunities exist beyond the traditional roles assigned to them. One of her proudest success stories is Nicole Martin, who started in the distillery\u2019s gift shop but quickly proved she had a rare talent.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe has a superpower\u2014her nose and her taste,\u201d Kate says. Recognising Nicole\u2019s potential, Wyoming Whiskey supported her transition into blending. Today, Nicole has not only created standout releases like <\/span>Independence Rock<\/span><\/a>\u2014Kate\u2019s new favorite expression\u2014but has also trained with Kirsteen Campbell, <\/span>The Macallan<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Master Whisky Maker, in Scotland.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see a woman move up in the industry\u2014someone who started in retail and is now working as a blender. Nicole has even gone to Scotland to train with Kirsteen Campbell, which has been an incredible experience for her. I\u2019m particularly proud of what she\u2019s achieved in the whiskey business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Changing Industry Landscape\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

While whiskey remains a traditionally male-dominated industry, Kate Mead has seen significant progress in recent years\u2014particularly in distilling and blending. \u201cWomen being whiskey makers, Master Distillers\u2026 that\u2019s really changed,\u201d she says. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t always like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She points to industry leaders like Kirsteen Campbell, The Macallan\u2019s Master Whisky Maker, and Jane Graham, a key figure at <\/span>Edrington<\/span><\/a>, as examples of women shaping the future of whiskey. At Wyoming Whiskey, she\u2019s proud to have played a role in that shift, from hiring blending expert Nancy Fraley to fostering Nicole Martin\u2019s rise from the gift shop to blending.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, Kate believes there\u2019s more work to be done. \u201cI wish I had found a mentor, or mentored more women myself,\u201d she admits. \u201cWe were so busy getting the business off the ground, we didn\u2019t have time to think about it.\u201d Despite this admission, Kate has clearly taken an active role in elevating and guiding women in whiskey within her sphere. Now, she hopes to see more women step into leadership roles\u2014and have the support they deserve.<\/span><\/p>\n

From mentoring rising talent like Nicole Martin to working alongside trailblazers like Kirsteen Campbell, she has played a key role in shaping a more inclusive future for whiskey.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Women\u2019s History Month highlights the achievements of women across industries, Kate\u2019s story is a reminder that progress doesn\u2019t happen by accident\u2014it takes champions willing to challenge the status quo.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
