This Women’s Day, we spotlight visionaries who discovered their greatest competitive advantage by flipping this paradigm—placing women’s perspectives at the centre of their business strategy and billion-pound opportunities emerged from the shadows.

THE POWER OF UNLEARNING

“Entering women’s hygiene, I brought curiosity rather than experience. We built Sirona by listening to thousands of women instead of making assumptions. Our success came from breaking taboos and solving real problems through empathy, education, and putting consumers first,” reveals Deep Bajaj, co-founder of Sirona Hygiene. What if the most revolutionary business strategy isn’t speaking with authority, but surrendering it? This approach—prioritising questions over answers—has unlocked markets invisible to those who never thought to look beyond their own experiences.

Bajaj’s journey highlights that most significant innovation gaps often exist where dominant perspectives fail to register genuine pain points. By positioning women as the architects of product development rather than passive recipients, Sirona created solutions that addressed problems many industry veterans didn’t even recognise existed.

RESEARCH AS REBELLION

When confronting a marketplace built on assumptions, research becomes an act of defiance. Sohail Gupta rejected industry shortcuts with MyMuse India: “The only way to truly understand women’s needs is to ask, listen, and refine. We spent months conducting in-depth research, speaking to women across different demographics to uncover what was missing in their wellness routines. This continuous feedback loop ensures we’re creating what women actually need—not just what the industry assumes they do,” says Sohail Gupta, co-founder, MyMuse India.Pradeep Banerjee took HYUE down a similar path: “Entering the beauty industry with HYUE was about creating products that truly resonate with Indian women’s diverse needs and aspirations. As a product-first brand, we focus on international-grade formulations tailored for Indian consumers. Our biggest challenge was understanding varied beauty aspirations, which we addressed through consumer feedback, co-creation with partners, and staying agile to evolve with trends while remaining authentic,” explains Banerjee, co-founder & ceo, HYUE.

In an era obsessed with big data, these leaders discovered the most revolutionary insights come from human conversation. Their approach represents a fundamental shift in market research methodology—moving from abstracted demographic analysis to immersive understanding of lived experience.

This human-centred research paradigm enabled these brands to identify subtle cultural nuances and unspoken needs that conventional market analysis consistently missed. The result wasn’t merely improved products but entirely new categories that solved problems many women had silently accepted as inevitable.

PERSONAL PAIN POINTS TO MARKET TRANSFORMATION

For Mayank Arya, the epiphany came from family: “Looking back, I never imagined YesMadam would become such a phenomenon. While other startups focused on convenience, we prioritised women’s needs after my family experienced skin issues from counterfeit salon products. We addressed the industry’s lack of standardisation and trust by providing certified training and quality products. As a customer-centric brand, we’re just getting started,” shares Arya, ceo & co-founder, YesMadam.

The markets most ripe for disruption often hide in plain sight—overlooked because the pain points don’t register to those with industry power.

Arya’s experience reflects a recurring pattern among these innovators: proximity to women’s unaddressed challenges created the spark for business transformation. This proximity—whether through family relationships, deep professional immersion, or intentional listening—provided access to a reservoir of market insights that others simply couldn’t see.

DECONSTRUCTING INDUSTRY NORMS

In hospitality, Dhaval Udeshi confronted entrenched hierarchies: “Stepping into the F&B space and working alongside incredible women has been a journey of constant learning and unlearning. I quickly realised that true leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about listening. Whether it’s chefs in the kitchen, managers on the floor, or guests at the table, their insights have shaped my approach. Breaking industry biases hasn’t always been easy, but it’s reinforced my belief that inclusivity isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s what drives real progress. My goal has always been to create spaces where talent, creativity, and passion thrive beyond gender labels,” says Udeshi, founder of Dhaval Udeshi Hospitality and partner at GIGI, LYLA, Kaia Goa, and Scarlett House.

When we strip away gender as the filter for innovation, we don’t just elevate women—we elevate the entire concept of value creation.

The hospitality industry globally has long reinforced rigid gender roles—from kitchen hierarchies to guest expectations. Udeshi’s approach demonstrates how dismantling these artificial limitations creates spaces that excel not despite inclusivity, but because of it. His venues don’t merely accommodate diverse perspectives; they actively harness them as engines of creative and commercial advantage.

HEALTHCARE’S EMPATHY REVOLUTION

Few industries impact women as intimately as healthcare, yet few have been as historically tone-deaf. Shivam Puri recognised this disconnect: “When designing products for women across diverse categories—be it mothercare with Mamaxpert or skincare innovations with Rivela Dermascience and Astaberry—one guiding principle has remained steadfast: innovations rooted in empathy and care always resonate deeply. This journey has reinforced a fundamental truth—creating solutions for women is not just about formulations or clinical efficacy; it’s about truly listening to their lived experiences. Whether it’s supporting mothers through life’s transformative stages or addressing evolving skincare needs, genuine consumer connection has been instrumental in shaping products that do more than deliver results—they enrich lives. This philosophy continues to shape my leadership approach, serving as a constant reminder to keep the consumer’s voice at the heart of every innovation,” notes Puri, CEO and MD, Cipla Health.

In healthcare, women’s instincts aren’t anecdotal evidence—they’re the missing clinical data that could save lives.

Puri’s approach challenges a fundamental flaw in healthcare innovation: the historical tendency to design for standardised bodies rather than diverse lived experiences. By elevating women’s subjective experiences to the level of essential data, Cipla Health has transformed product development from a primarily clinical exercise to one that integrates physiological science with phenomenological understanding.

TRANSPARENCY AS COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

For Mohit Yadav, simplicity became strategy: “One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned at Minimalist is that clarity and trust go hand in hand. In both leadership and skincare, cutting through unnecessary complexity leads to better decisions and stronger relationships. Consumers appreciate honesty over marketing jargon, and the same applies to teams. My approach has been simple—prioritise transparency, empower with knowledge, and stay focused on delivering real impact. Ultimately, it’s about creating something meaningful, not just selling a product,” explains Yadav, co-founder and CEO, Minimalist.

Yadav’s approach represents a profound challenge to beauty industry conventions, which have historically profited from deliberate obfuscation and insecurity marketing. By embracing radical transparency, Minimalist reframed the entire value proposition of skincare—shifting from aspirational mystique to informed partnership. This transformation creates a fundamentally different relationship with consumers, built on education rather than dependency.

A CULINARY LEGEND’S LIFETIME COMMITMENT

Few have championed women’s empowerment longer than Sanjeev Kapoor. When we sit down with him, his passion for this topic is immediately apparent.

“My life for years, not just now, our primary focus has been about women. So it’s quite obvious. And if there’s somebody who’s such an important cohort that’s so important, then you make sure that you take time. Don’t just sell to them, you celebrate with them!” he says, gesturing expressively.

When asked about how he approaches marketing without sounding prescriptive, he thoughtfully responds, “It’s a bit like preaching to the pulpit when you talk about either food pan that they should be using, or about things that they should be putting because each one has their own recipe.”

His solution reflects a deep understanding of his audience’s priorities: “So what is the deliverable that is there? Married with kids, the health of kids is most important. We would talk about attributes, a person would be benefited, rather than a product.”

His approach transcends product functionality: “From day one till today, each product comes with the recipe book. When we launched, also, the first thing we said was that we will not just sell products, we will make you look good.”

Before we wrap up, we ask what advice he has for women learning to cook. His eyes light up when asked: “For women who are learning to cook—some people enjoy cooking, some people cook to feed themselves—what is that one takeaway? Believe that you can become a much better cook than Sanjeev. Really.”

Kapoor, founder of Wonderchef, stands apart in the culinary world by rejecting the traditional chef-as-authority model. Instead, he’s built a career and business around the principle of enablement—providing tools, knowledge, and most importantly, confidence. This approach represents a fundamental reframing of culinary expertise from an exclusive professional domain to an accessible everyday practice that honours home cooking traditions often carried by women.

CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE AS MARKET DOMINANCE

Madhur Acharya cuts to the heart of cultural understanding: “Understanding market-specific cultural behaviours transforms product design fundamentally. In India, consumers instinctively extend a ’30-day’ product lifespan to 45 days minimum—this isn’t just usage pattern data, it’s deeply embedded cultural pragmatism that demands we engineer differently,” observes Acharya, vp business head-Aqualense, Lenskart.

Vikas Bagaria adds: “Entering the feminine hygiene space was driven by understanding the urgent need for safe, accessible solutions that positively impact health and lifestyle. Addressing the needs of women as a male entrepreneur involves unique challenges, including the necessity to break taboos, establish trust, and gain a comprehensive understanding. True impact comes from creating solutions with women, not just for them,” emphasises Bagaria, founder & ceo, Pee Safe.

These perspectives highlight a critical insight: cultural nuance isn’t merely a marketing consideration but a foundational product design imperative. Both Acharya and Bagaria recognised that truly effective solutions must address not just universal needs but culturally specific contexts, behaviours, and barriers.

For Bagaria, this meant confronting deeply rooted taboos around women’s health and hygiene—barriers that prevented not just product adoption but critical health conversations. By making cultural understanding central to product development, Pee Safe created solutions that didn’t just work physically but resonated culturally.

THE ECONOMIC IMPERATIVE OF GENUINE INCLUSION

These aren’t just inspiring stories—they’re blueprints for market leadership. By centring women’s insights, these companies unlocked massive opportunities others missed entirely.

The commercial impact of this approach is undeniable. Each of these brands has achieved significant market success not by targeting women more effectively, but by fundamentally redefining their industries through women’s perspectives. This transformation generates competitive advantages that transcend traditional marketing approaches—creating products that solve real problems rather than manufacturing artificial needs.

This Women’s Day, their examples offer three powerful lessons:

First, the most disruptive innovations emerge when we recognise that half of humanity has been speaking truths the market wasn’t ready to hear.

Second, empathy isn’t charity—it’s the most sophisticated business intelligence available.

And finally, the future belongs to companies that recognise women not as consumers to be targeted, but as the unacknowledged architects of what truly matters.

Published On Mar 8, 2025 at 08:39 AM IST

Join the community of 2M+ industry professionals

Subscribe to our newsletter to get latest insights & analysis.

Download ETBrandEquity App

Get Realtime updates

Save your favourite articles

Scan to download App

For centuries, products and services have been designed with male bodies, preferences, and experiences as the default standard.
