{"id":119519,"date":"2025-03-08T07:14:18","date_gmt":"2025-03-08T07:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/the-power-of-just-not-buying-it\/"},"modified":"2025-03-08T07:14:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-08T07:14:18","slug":"the-power-of-just-not-buying-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=119519","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Just Not Buying It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/downloads\/21528\/download\/TargetStore.jpg?cb=84c8aa60d038aa17d193c5b5b2200479\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"lead\">On February\u00a028, the activist group <a href=\"https:\/\/thepeoplesunionusa.com\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (People&#x2019;s Union USA)\">People\u2019s Union USA<\/a> organized a twenty-four-hour \u201ceconomic blackout.\u201d The group called upon people to refrain from buying anything from big corporations that have <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7260689\/us-companies-scaling-back-dei-efforts-trump-targets-initiatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (knuckled under)\">knuckled under<\/a> pressure from the Trump Administration to cut back or eliminate their programs to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. With some exceptions, folks were encouraged to plan ahead and not buy anything from anyone except locally owned businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFebruary\u00a028 is a symbolic start to economic resistance, a day where we show corporations and politicians that we control the economy,\u201d the group <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7262444\/why-consumers-are-planning-economic-blackout-february-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (wrote)\">wrote<\/a> on its website. <em>Time<\/em> magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7262444\/why-consumers-are-planning-economic-blackout-february-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (noted)\">noted<\/a> that the economic blackout \u201cappeared to specifically target mega corporations, citing stores like Walmart, Amazon, and Best Buy. But consumers were encouraged to stop shopping overall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boycott participants were also urged to stay off social media. All day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I heard about the blackout, I was reminded of other boycotts, particularly during the Civil Rights Movement. In 1962, I participated in my first boycott in Huntsville, Alabama. We did not buy new clothes from segregated stores because Martin Luther King Jr., in conjunction with the local churches, had organized a boycott. If we couldn\u2019t shop at the stores by entering through the front door, we wouldn\u2019t patronize them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was born the year after the Montgomery bus boycott ended, which <a href=\"https:\/\/kinginstitute.stanford.edu\/montgomery-bus-boycott\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (took place)\">took place<\/a> from December\u00a05, 1955, to December\u00a020, 1956 in my home state of Alabama. The most notable boycott I recall during my lifetime was the grape-and-lettuce boycott, which, along with a strike, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/50-years-later-remembering-delano-grape-strike-n433886\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (lasted)\">lasted<\/a> from September\u00a07, 1965, to July 29, 1970. It was when I first heard the names Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The goal of these strikes, boycotts, and demonstrations was to increase wages and working conditions of the farm workers. Two of the organizing unions <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/collections\/object\/nmah_1940715#:~:text=A%20week%20later%2C%20the%20NFWA%2C%20whose%20membership,create%20the%20United%20Farm%20Workers%20Organizing%20Committee.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (merged)\">merged<\/a> and created the United Farm Workers (UFW).<\/p>\n<p>Participating in a boycott, as I did once again on February 28, involves a bit of sacrifice. I am a self-confessed Facebook and Amazon addict. I have rarely gone more than eight hours without posting on Facebook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the coming weeks, there will be many more opportunities to take part in these protests. The People\u2019s Union USA has <a href=\"https:\/\/thepeoplesunionusa.com\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (planned)\">planned<\/a> additional blackout days throughout the months of March and April. \u201cThe first domino that will set off a chain of actions until the people get what they deserve,\u201d the group <a href=\"https:\/\/thepeoplesunionusa.com\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (states)\">states<\/a> on its website. \u201cThis is about solidarity and sending a clear message.\u00a0We have the power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Reverend\u00a0Jamal Bryant in Atlanta organized <a href=\"http:\/\/targetfast.org\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (targetfast.org)\">targetfast.org<\/a> for Christians to boycott Target for forty days starting Wednesday, March 5, the first day of Lent. The site includes a \u201cBlack Wall Street Ticker\u201d to \u201ctrack our collective dollars as we shift the economy.\u201d And a \u201cVoter Wallet\u201d feature helps consumers \u201cfind Black businesses, redirect spending, and boycott where it matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reverend\u00a0Al Sharpton, no stranger to boycotts and protests, said via his <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalactionnetwork.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (National Action Network)\">National Action Network<\/a> website: \u201cDonald Trump can cut federal DEI programs to the bone, he can claw back federal money to expand diversity, but he cannot tell us what grocery store we shop at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the February\u00a028 blackout did have an impact, according to Pamela N. Danziger at <em>Forbes<\/em> magazine, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/pamdanziger\/2025\/03\/03\/target-loses-and-costco-wins-in-web-traffic-on-feb-28-economic-blackout-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (reported)\">reported<\/a> that Target\u2019s app traffic was down while traffic at Costco, whose shareholders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/pamdanziger\/2025\/01\/24\/costco-shareholders-overwhelmingly-support-companys-dei-policies-as-other-major-retailers-retreat\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (voted)\">voted<\/a> to affirm its strong commitment to DEI, was up. Walmart, the nation\u2019s number one retailer, had a 5 percent slump in web traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, as was the case in earlier boycotts, a one-day blackout is not going to have much of an impact. But a sustained effort over many just might. I, for one, am willing to do what I can to extract a price from companies that turn their backs on policies meant to level the playing field for disadvantaged groups.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I will participate in the People\u2019s Union USA and targetfast.org\u2019s upcoming actions. The upcoming Amazon Blackout will be challenging.
