So this week for<br \/>\nthe sport\u2019s 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary I\u2019ll AmericanStudy a handful of hockey<br \/>\nhistories, leading up to a weekend post on some SportsStudiers we can all learn<br \/>\nfrom!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">On three<br \/>\ngroundbreaking players who together reflect the sport\u2019s gradual evolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">1)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhof.com\/induction\/induction2022\/herbcarnegie.html\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Herb<br \/>\nCarnegie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> (1919-2012): As with baseball in the US, for much of the early 20<sup>th<\/sup><br \/>\ncentury hockey in Canada was racially segregated, with organizations like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca\/en\/article\/coloured-hockey-league\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Colored<br \/>\nHockey League of the Maritimes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> offering the only consistent<br \/>\nopportunities for Black players. That means that, as with the Negro Leagues in<br \/>\nbaseball, we have far too many instances of clearly exceptional, Hall of Fame<br \/>\nworthy players (as the first hyperlink above reflects) who never had the chance<br \/>\nto play in the full professional leagues. Herb Carnegie is very high on that<br \/>\nlist, winning MVP multiple times in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritagetrust.on.ca\/pages\/our-stories\/exhibits\/snapshots-of-ontarios-sport-heritage\/impact-of-immigration-on-sport\/herbert-herb-carnegie\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">lower<br \/>\nprofessional leagues in Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> and even receiving a tryout with the<br \/>\nNew York Rangers in 1948. But the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.sports.yahoo.com\/news\/how-conn-smythes-racism-kept-herb-carnegie-from-achieving-his-nhl-dream-185826604.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAHjeuYWCMYO_6WPy0aaRCBcYFBpjtQhlVfnW7Ha_mBxHLEzeW4MgrsXrjNX6KVFc1j91ij1pUGdG9P_wTShNbiep0_St68FYqH35PBOr_mxGsLhuLmDzsCMHRPmapKkuUvcPAHFkN8NvS_5JkbHwn7RrY8BMRmHRWnOyU_z3p9II\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Rangers<br \/>\nrefused Carnegie an NHL roster spot and offered him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> less<br \/>\nmoney to play in their minor league system than he was making in the lower<br \/>\nleagues and he turned them down, one more reflection of what was lost in this<br \/>\nsegregated era of hockey. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">2)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><a href=\"https:\/\/www.williedoc.com\/\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Willie<br \/>\nO\u2019Ree<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> (1935- ): A decade after Carnegie\u2019s tryout, the \u201cJackie Robinson<br \/>\nof ice hockey\u201d finally broke the NHL\u2019s color barrier. A prodigy from a very<br \/>\nyoung age, playing on teams at the age of 5 and playing in league playoffs<br \/>\nbefore he was 16, O\u2019Ree actually met Robinson while still that talented<br \/>\nteenager in New Brunswick (not long after Robinson had broken into the major<br \/>\nleagues). Just a few years later, in January 1958, O\u2019Ree was called up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/bruins\/video\/press-room-willie-o-ree-6365387537112\">the<br \/>\nBoston Bruins<\/a> from the minor league Quebec Aces; he would play in only two<br \/>\ngames in that year, but would stay in the league and play more than 40 games<br \/>\nduring the 1960-61 season. He also faced racist taunts from Chicago Blackhawks<br \/>\nplayers and fans (among many many other during that year), leading to melee<br \/>\nafter which, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/thevarsity107\/page\/n481\">he later<br \/>\nreflected<\/a>, he was \u201clucky to get out of the arena alive.\u201d Like Jackie in<br \/>\nmore ways than one, was Willie O\u2019Ree. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">3)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt7611944\/\">Grant<br \/>\nFuhr<\/a> (1962- ): O\u2019Ree didn\u2019t exactly open the floodgates, but gradually more<br \/>\nand more Black players did join the NHL over the next few decades. One of the<br \/>\nmost groundbreaking and talented was Grant Fuhr, the first Black goalie to play<br \/>\nin the league and the first to win a Stanley Cup when his Edmonton Oilers did<br \/>\nso five times in the 1980s (and eventually the first to be inducted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhof.com\/induction_archives\/ind03fuhr.shtml\">into the Hockey<br \/>\nHall of Fame<\/a> as well). Fuhr being the first in those categories a century<br \/>\nafter the creation of the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes is as<br \/>\nfrustrating a fact as any produced by segregated histories\u2014but we can remember the<br \/>\nfrustrations while still celebrating the iconic and inspiring individuals who<br \/>\nhelped change them, a list that includes all three of these hockey stars. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Last<br \/>\nhockey history tomorrow,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Ben<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">PS.
