We’ve had a few bright and sunny days recently, a welcome
\nchange from the wind, rain, and grey skies. With Mrs. PBT’s<\/b> busy with VAT
\n<\/b>returns, Friday <\/b>seemed perfect to go outside in search of a country pub. After
\nfinishing my chores, I put on my hiking boots for the first time in months and
\nheaded down into Tonbridge.<\/b> I was making for the Plough,<\/b><\/a><\/u> at Leigh<\/b>, a classic
\ncountry inn that dates back to the 16th<\/sup> century.<\/b> It\u2019s a pub I have
\nknown well over the years, and one that is quite easy to reach on foot, from my
\nhouse in Tonbridge. \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The route goes across the sports ground, under the railway,
\nover a footbridge, and then through to an area known as the Powder Mills.<\/b> This
\nsettlement is close to the neighbouring village of Leigh<\/b> and was once home to a
\nnumber of gunpowder mills. The nearby streams provided power for the water
\nmills, used to grind the charcoal, sulphur <\/b>and saltpetre<\/b> components that when
\nmixed and finely ground together, make up gunpowder. The isolated position of
\nthis enterprise ensured that should the worst happen collateral damage to
\nnearby houses and farm buildings would be minimal.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Pharmaceutical giant, GSK (Glaxo-Smith-Kline)<\/b> once operated a research plant near
\nPowder Mills,<\/b> but it has since closed, leaving no trace. Despite this, the area
\nis still known as Powder Mills. <\/b>The closure of local industries, including
\nmultinationals, is unfortunately quite common, especially given the shenanigans
\nof big business, and the increasing value of land, especially here in the south
\neast. It will come as no surprise then to learn that the former GSK<\/b> site is now
\noccupied by housing. This does have the benefit of an improved footpath,
\nleading to the lane where the Plough<\/b> is situated, but is of little comfort to former
\nGSK<\/b> employees. I have known several of these over the years, and a recently
\nappointed new member of our management team, worked at the site. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I had been planning to walk to the Plough<\/b> for some time and
\nhad considered doing it earlier in the year, but the short daylight hours
\ndeterred me. Walking back in the dark wouldn’t have been wise. Now, with sunset
\naround 6pm, there was plenty of time for a walk in the sunshine. Most of the
\npath is tarmac or compressed rock chippings, except for one particularly muddy
\nsection that ruined the appearance of my nice clean boots. It was an enjoyable
\nwalk that was mostly flat, except for a slight hill near the Powder Mills. It
\nwas just before there that I noticed some sheep, but no lambs yet. However, with many ewes looking quite \u201cbulky\u201d,<\/i><\/b> I\u2019m sure that lambing must be imminent.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It was a lovely day for a walk, with just the bird song and
\nthe occasional buzz of aircraft, way over head, to disturb the rural
\ntranquillity. Actually, the birds chirping away added to the occasion and the unmistakable
\nsound of a woodpecker at work, was a sure sign that spring is on its way. Another
\nsign was the patch of snowdrops, as I approached the pub. Even better were the daffodils
\nblooming under the sign near the car park entrance. Upon arriving at the pub’s
\nmain entrance, I did a quick look around before heading to the bar. Nothing
\nseemed to have changed from previous visits, which is always a good sign.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

There were two cask ales available, one each from Tonbridge
\nBrewery (Old Chestnut)<\/b> and Pig & Porter (Got The Face On). Pig & Porter<\/b>
\nseem to offer a different beer every week, but according to Untappd,<\/b> I had
\ndrank this one before. It might be heresy for me to say so, but Tonbridge<\/b> beers
\noften feel a bit dull to me, although there are one or two exceptions. I
\nordered a pint of Pig & Porter,<\/b> and the barman suggested I sit at the
\nlarge, empty table, constructed from ancient, polished wooden planks, since
\nthey weren’t expecting any large parties that day. I inquired if there were any
\nweddings planned, as the Plough <\/b>often hosts receptions in the adjacent barn. He
\nsaid not this week, but it wouldn\u2019t be long before the wedding \u201cseason\u201d<\/i><\/b> kicks
\noff in earnest. \u00a0<\/span>The beer was a bit too
\ncitrusy for my taste but after my walk, was still pleasantly refreshing.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The pub itself has been extended gradually, over the
\ncenturies, but in a timeless and seamless manner, meaning the sprawling
\ninterior is divided into several interconnected areas, that integrate well with
\none another. The main bar is dominated by a doubled-sided open fire, situated close
\nto the doorway that leads down to the garden, and also the Great Barn.<\/b> As might
\nbe expected in a pub of such antiquity, there are plenty of ancient, low, sturdy
\nbeams, blackened by centuries of age. The clientele that day seemed mainly
\nelderly diners, although there were a few locals and their dogs who had popped
\nin for a quick one. The stone-flagged floors mean that muddy paws, as well as
\nmud-encrusted hiking boots are not a problem.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I didn\u2019t fancy another pint, as neither of the two beers
\nimpressed me, so I set off on the walk back to Tonbridge,<\/b> with the intention of
\ndiverting onto the path leading to Haysden Country Park.<\/b> From there I could cut
\nthrough the late 19th<\/sup> <\/b>and early 20th<\/sup> Century <\/b>housing
\ndevelopments that have grown up on either side of the railway. It had been some
\ntime since I\u2019d last walked that way, but I followed my nose and eventually
\nended up at the Nelson Arms,<\/b> where I knew I\u2019d find a beer more to my taste. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I arrived at the pub just after 3.30pm,<\/b> in the midst of that
\nafternoon lull that many pubs seem to experience. There were nine cask beers on
\noffer, plus a similar number of craft keg ales. I fancied something low in
\nstrength, but high in flavour, and Kernel Mild<\/b> fitted the bill nicely, coming
\nin at 3.4%. <\/b>I hadn\u2019t been in the Nelson<\/b> long, when Jon<\/b>, from Hadlow<\/b> came in. I
\nhadn\u2019t seen him for a long time, so he came over and joined me for a chat. Coincidentally,
\nJon<\/b> used to work at the GSK Powder Mills<\/b> site but now works for a company that manufactures
\ngas detection equipment. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Even more of a coincidence was the fact I was looking for a specialist
\ncompany in relation to our pressurised gas systems at work. It was talking shop
\non a grand scale, but Jo<\/b>n promised to forward some details over to me, providing
\nproof, if it was needed, that it\u2019s who you now, rather than not what you know,
\nthat can make all the difference in life. We both left it at just the one pint
\neach. Jon was keen to get over to Fuggles<\/b>, as they were still running their \u201cDark
\nLife\u201d<\/i><\/b> <\/a><\/u>event, although this February<\/b> promotion was now starting to run down. The
\nidea behind Dark Life<\/b> was a month-long celebration of dark and delicious beers.
\nWhilst I was tempted, I knew that I t wouldn\u2019t just stay for one so, as the News
