Use Goals to Power Your Budgeting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>If you can\u2019t connect your budgeting habits to real-life goals, it will be tough to stick to your budget when you have no motivation.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re simply choosing between a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/free-budget-templates\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/free-budget-templates\" data-lasso-id=\"156133\">free budget template<\/a> (perhaps one you found online) and something you really want, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll give yourself immediate satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You need to connect your budget to real, actual goals.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why are you going through this monthly exercise of budgeting and sticking to it?\u00a0 You need to write down exactly why you\u2019re doing this.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, <strong>vague or generic goals probably won\u2019t help you stay motivated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some people try to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/how-to-save-money\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/how-to-save-money\" data-lasso-id=\"156134\">save money<\/a>\u201d without committing to anything specific, but this isn\u2019t usually an effective long-term approach.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve found that I need to be extremely detailed with my goals in order to be motivated by them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9edc2\"><strong>How to fix it:<\/strong> Define your short and long-term goals.<\/p>\n<p>Budgeting is almost always beneficial, but it\u2019s easier to stay committed if you\u2019re targeting both short and long-term financial goals.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than spending less just to be more frugal, you\u2019ll be moving toward a tangible goal like starting to invest, saving for retirement, or building a college fund for a loved one.<\/p>\n<p>For the same reasons, it\u2019s best to come up with a concrete, measurable goal each month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start with something small, even just $25 or $50 per month will go a long way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re tempted by something you don\u2019t need, keep both your immediate and long-term needs in mind.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easier to hold off when you believe the money you save is going to something more important.<\/p>\n<p>And here is a bonus tip I use. I create a vision board in my journal.<\/p>\n<p>It has images of my goals and I review them every morning.<\/p>\n<p>This lights a fire inside me that carries through the entire day to be smart with my money so I can reach my goals.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Include_Unexpected_Costs_In_Your_Budget\"\/>#4. Include Unexpected Costs In Your Budget<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"420\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"unexpected expenses\" class=\"wp-image-18578\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/unexpected-expenses.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/unexpected-expenses-300x168.jpg 300w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/unexpected-expenses.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/unexpected-expenses.jpg\" alt=\"unexpected expenses\" class=\"wp-image-18578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/unexpected-expenses.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/unexpected-expenses-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo Credit: Deposit Photos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to budget for recurring and regular expenses like groceries, subscriptions, and gas, but things get more complicated for new or one-time costs.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to go to the dentist and take your cat to the vet in the same month, you\u2019ll find yourself going over budget quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When unavoidable expenses completely change your budgeting plans, it can be tough to get back on track.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to budget effectively, you\u2019ll need to maintain a long-term outlook that takes costs into account before they come up.<\/p>\n<p>This will help you avoid financial surprises and stick to your budget without breaking the bank for major expenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9edc2\"><strong>How to fix it:<\/strong> Build an emergency fund and budget for surprises.<\/p>\n<p>With an emergency fund, you\u2019ll be able to cover unexpected costs that would otherwise derail your budget.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Once you\u2019ve saved enough money, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/emergency-fund-basics\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.moneysmartguides.com\/emergency-fund-basics\" data-lasso-id=\"156135\">emergency fund<\/a> will also be your first fallback if you lose your primary source of income.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many experts therefore recommend building a fund equal to at least three months of expenses.<\/p>\n<p>It will take time to reach that goal, but just a few hundred dollars will help you get through a range of difficult financial situations.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re currently in debt, it\u2019s still a good idea to put at least some of your paycheck toward an emergency fund if you don\u2019t already have one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just as an emergency fund gives you some insurance for surprise expenses, you can budget for the costs you are expecting by starting to think about them a few months in advance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your ten-year anniversary is coming up, for example, don\u2019t wait until that month to budget for the cost of a gift.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, identify it as a future expense around six months in advance, then divide the cost and save a fraction of the total each month.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than budgeting for $300 all at once, for example, you can start taking $50 out of your paycheck six months beforehand and distribute the savings more evenly.<\/p>\n<p>If the seller offers financing with little or no interest, take advantage of this option to give yourself even more time to pay off the debt.<\/p>\n<p>If you know you\u2019ll have six months to make payments, for example, you could divide that initial $300 into twelve payments of just $25.<\/p>\n<p>The more you can spread out these costs, the easier it becomes to account for them in your monthly budget.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Focus_on_the_Small_Stuff_Too\"\/>#5.
