Detect early, protect kidney health.\u201d The veterinary staff of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center supports that sentiment entirely. Inspired by my colleagues\u2019 work on protecting kidney health, today\u2019s blogpost provides a \u201ckidney primer,\u201d curated from previous blogposts, to help pet families understand kidney disease and its treatment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding Your Pet\u2019s Kidney Test Results<\/h2>\n<p>Detecting kidney disease early requires testing urine and blood samples. Veterinarians tend to talk about these tests in doctor shorthand. Sometimes the shorthand slips into our conversations with pet families, which can be confusing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcny.org\/blog\/2022\/03\/09\/how-to-talk-to-your-pets-veterinarian-about-kidney-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This blogpost on how to talk to your veterinarian about kidney disease<\/a> explains common tests used in kidney disease diagnosis.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diagnostic Imaging for Feline &amp; Canine Kidneys<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to kidney blood tests, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcny.org\/pet-owners\/specialties\/diagnostic-imaging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMC radiologists<\/a> have four different types of diagnostic imaging modalities for detecting kidney disease: x-ray, ultrasound, CT scan and MRI. You can see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcny.org\/blog\/2023\/03\/08\/celebrating-world-kidney-day-by-looking-at-kidneys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an example of each of these imaging modalities in a blogpost from World Kidney Day 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Protect Your Pet\u2019s Kidneys<\/h2>\n<p>The theme for this year\u2019s World Kidney Day mentions protecting kidneys. This can be done by simply avoiding toxins that negatively impact kidney function, and here\u2019s where pet families\u2019 vigilance can be lifesaving. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcny.org\/blog\/2017\/03\/08\/keep-pets-kidneys-healthy-avoiding-kidney-toxins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Common substances damaging to the kidneys of dogs and cats include: lilies, grapes, raisins, antifreeze and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/a>. Many medications can damage your pet\u2019s kidneys, so prevent your pets from getting into medications, yours or their own.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of Special Kidney Food for a Pet with Kidney Disease<\/h2>\n<p>In a recent blogpost, I highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcny.org\/blog\/2025\/02\/19\/why-special-diets-matter-for-cats-with-chronic-kidney-disease-ckd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">why it\u2019s important to feed cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) a special diet<\/a>. Dogs develop CKD too, but not as often as cats. Veterinarians recommend feeding a kidney friendly diet to a dog with chronic kidney, just like we do for cats.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Subcutaneous Fluids for Dogs and Cats with Kidney Disease<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcny.org\/blog\/2020\/06\/17\/chronic-kidney-disease-in-cats-and-subcutaneous-fluids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Administration of fluids at home is a common treatment for pets with kidney disease<\/a>. Fluid administration combats dehydration, and well-hydrated pets feel better and eat better. The procedure is a bit intimidating at first, but <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28948902\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most pet families find subcutaneous fluid administration very beneficial for their pets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To help pet families understand kidney disease, AMC\u2019s Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education has two Pet Health Library entries focusing on kidney disease: one entry for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcny.org\/pet_health_library\/acute-kidney-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acute kidney disease<\/a> and the other for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcny.org\/pet_health_library\/chronic-kidney-disease-ckd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chronic kidney disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- back_to --><\/p>\n<p>\n            <span>Tags:<\/span><br \/>\n        acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, diet, kidney, kidney disease, radiology, subcutaneous fluids, world kidney day, <\/p>\n<p><!-- tags -->\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s theme for World Kidney Day (March 13) is \u201cAre your kidneys OK?
