I\u2019ve just wrapped up <strong>Book 2<\/strong> of my <a href=\"https:\/\/workinmypajamas.com\/read-100-non-fiction-books\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><strong>100-book challenge for 2025<\/strong><\/a>, and let me tell you\u2014it was a short but fascinating ride. The book? <em>Longitude<\/em> by Dava Sobel.<\/p>\n<p>Now, before you assume this is just a dry history lesson about clocks (yawn, right?), let me stop you there. This book is about <strong>one of the greatest underdog stories in history<\/strong>, featuring a self-taught genius, a high-stakes scientific mystery, and a bunch of grumpy sea captains who were very, very lost.<\/p>\n<p>And since I\u2019m reading this from a tiny Caribbean island full of <strong>seafaring souls and salty characters<\/strong>, it felt like the perfect pick. Meaning, ships regularly veered off course, crashed into things, and sometimes just <em>vanished<\/em> into the abyss.<\/p>\n<p>Enter <strong>John Harrison<\/strong>, a self-educated English clockmaker who, against all odds, built the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/John-Harrison-British-horologist#:~:text=John%20Harrison%20(born%20March%201693,accurately%20their%20longitude%20at%20sea.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><strong>first accurate marine chronometer<\/strong><\/a>\u2014a device that changed navigation forever. The tension! The <em>unrelenting<\/em> pursuit of a timepiece that wouldn\u2019t lose minutes in stormy conditions! Because what\u2019s an adventure without a little jet-setting? \u2708\ufe0f<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span id=\"H-1_Was_Supposed_to_Be_Tested_on_the_Essex_But_Not_That_Essex\"><strong>H-1 Was Supposed to Be Tested on the Essex\u2026 But Not <em>That<\/em> Essex<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s clear up a little maritime mix-up before some history buff throws me overboard. <strong>Yes, John Harrison\u2019s first chronometer (H-1) was supposed to be tested on a ship called the <em>Essex<\/em>.<\/strong> No, this was <em>not<\/em> the same <a href=\"https:\/\/essex.nha.org\/the-whaleship-essex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><em>Essex<\/em><\/a> that got body-slammed by an angry sperm whale and left its crew stranded in a real-life survival horror story.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, <strong>\u201cEssex\u201d was a pretty popular boat name back in the day<\/strong>\u2014kind of like the \u201cJohn Smith\u201d of the high seas. The <em>Essex<\/em> that tested H-1 in 1736 was a <strong>sensible, drama-free British Navy ship<\/strong>, not the doomed American whaling vessel of 1820.<\/p>\n<p>So, while Harrison\u2019s clock was off proving that <strong>precise timekeeping could save sailors from getting lost<\/strong>, the <em>other<\/em> Essex was busy sailing into infamy, setting the stage for <em>Moby-Dick<\/em> and an absolutely terrifying tale of shipwreck and survival.<\/p>\n<p>But hey, at least <em>one<\/em> Essex had a happy ending. \u23f3\u26f5<\/p>\n<p>Now, onto Book 3\u2014where we\u2019ll be diving headfirst into the <em>wrong<\/em> Essex and all the madness that followed.
