Candles and
\nscents help me feel cozy hibernating indoors during this gray, cold time of the
\nyear.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I have never made candles, but
\nfriends often gift me with the good essential oil candles and the flameless wax
\ncandles that look real.\u00a0 <\/span>One friend gave
\nme a wax tart melter with some lovely Lemon Verbena scented soy wax tarts.\u00a0 <\/span>Swoon!\u00a0
\n<\/span>I\u2019ve been addicted to them ever since.\u00a0
\n<\/span>The wax tarts made with essential oils are surprisingly hard to find, at
\nleast in towns near me, and they are not cheap.\u00a0
\n<\/span>The ones made with fragrance oil smell great in the package, but the
\nscent changes during the melting.\u00a0 <\/span>I
\ndecided to make my own wax tarts without using Bee\u2019s wax despite it being my
\nfavorite wax.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Bees are dwindling in
\nnumbers and working hard enough already.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Warning, OCD tangent just ahead!\u00a0
\n<\/span>It could be contagious.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

\u00a0My supply
\nshelves held Bee\u2019s wax, Candelilla wax and Carnauba wax, but no Soy wax, and
\nafter a bit of research on soy wax, I decided not to order any.\u00a0 <\/span>In researching waxes for the tarts, I found
\nseveral references suggesting that soy candle wax is solvent extracted from
\ngenetically modified soy seed grown with pesticides.\u00a0 <\/span>It is grown by just a handful of growers,
\nincluding Monsanto, and only in the United States.\u00a0 <\/span>I love the smokeless properties of soy
\ncandles, but I can\u2019t un-see that research now.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Unless something more positive comes to light, I will personally pass on
\nusing soy wax for now.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Candelilla wax<\/b> is extracted from
\nEuphorbia cerifera, a shrub native to Mexico.\u00a0
\n<\/span>It is a cosmetic astringent, emulsion stabilizer, and does have a scent,
\nthough it does not seem unpleasant to me.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Think of an extremely mild scent of honey and resin, or maybe honey and camphor.\u00a0 <\/span>I could not detect the wax scent at all in
\nthe sample tarts I made.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>References to Candelilla wax suggest it is a
\nlow hazard wax.<\/p>\n

Carnauba wax <\/b>is harvested from the
\nleaves of the Coepernicia prunifers palm tree in Brazil.\u00a0 <\/span>It is one of the hardest natural waxes.\u00a0 <\/span>It is commonly used in commercial waxes and
\npolishes, and to coat pills and candies, because of its durable nature and high
\nluster.<\/p>\n

Virgin Coconut oil <\/b>hardly needs an
\nexplanation.\u00a0 <\/span>The benefits in food and
\nskincare are legion.\u00a0 <\/span>It is made from the
\nfresh coconut meat of the coconut palm tree that grows in tropical climates. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>It
\nretains the fresh coconut scent <\/b>and
\nis high in lauric acid.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Refined
\ncoconut oil<\/b> (copra) is made from the scraped, dried fruits of the same tree
\nand is widely used in soap making and other skincare applications.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mountain Rose Herbs had a guest candle recipe post on their blog containing
\nCarnauba and Coconut oil.\u00a0 <\/span>I always have
\ncoconut oil on hand, so I measured out equal parts Carnauba and virgin coconut
\noil.\u00a0 <\/span>Carnauba takes a long time to
\nmelt.\u00a0 <\/span>The finished tart was so hard it
\nhadn\u2019t melted in 50 minutes over the low heat of the melting dish.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It obviously was not suitable for wax
\ntarts.\u00a0 <\/span>After seeing how hard that wax
\ncombo was, it makes sense that it would burn cleanly with a candle flame, and
\nwould not distort or collapse as happens with softer candles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I scaled down
\na wax tart recipe with bee\u2019s wax and coconut oil that I found online, but substituted
\nCandelilla for the bee\u2019s wax.\u00a0 <\/span>Candelilla
\nis generally a good vegan substitute for bee\u2019s wax, with similar melting temps,
\nyet much harder.\u00a0 <\/span>The finished tart was
\nway too soft.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

The mad scientist
\nin me surfaced.\u00a0 <\/span>The chicken breasts I
\nwas going to make for dinner went back in the refrigerator.\u00a0 <\/span>Dinner was not happening that night.\u00a0 <\/span>I filled every votive container I had with
\nvarious increments of Candelilla and V Coconut oils.\u00a0 <\/span>I labeled each votive.\u00a0 <\/span>As the wax hardened, I noticed hairline
\ncracks on some of the wax clinging to the sides of the jars. <\/p>\n

The next votive
\nwas bee\u2019s wax and coconut oil, made so I could compare the sheeting of various
\ncombinations.\u00a0 <\/span>I wanted lovely scent, so
\nI added a half an eyedropper of a Lavender and Rosemary essential oil blend to
\neach 1 oz. votive of melted wax.\u00a0 <\/span>I hoped
\nto end up with a tart that wouldn\u2019t fingerprint with handling.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I made a new
\nbatch of votives, reversing all the previous wax and oil ratios with a higher
\nrate of V Coconut to Candelilla.\u00a0 <\/span>Two of
\nthe newer pours coated the votives without cracking, similar to Bee\u2019s wax. \u00a0<\/span>I melted them in the warmer, one at a time,
\nand took notes.\u00a0 <\/span>I tried to melt the bee\u2019s
\nwax and coconut tart, but part of the square imprint still remained after an
\nhour of melting. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It smelled glorious, though.<\/p>\n

Only three tarts
\nmade the final cut for me, and I liked each of them for different reasons.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

3:1 \u2013 V. Coconut\/Candelilla<\/b>\u00a0 <\/span>– The tart looked firm and shiny, but melted
\ncompletely in 25-30 minutes. \u00a0<\/span>The scent
\nfrom the coconut oil and essential oils held wonderfully.\u00a0 <\/span>The downside was the shiny surface smudged pretty
\neasily with handling.\u00a0 <\/span>All in all, for my
\nown use, and carefully stored, these would probably be my first choice.<\/p>\n

2:1 \u2013 V. Coconut\/Candelilla<\/b> \u2013 Firm and
\nshiny, it melted in 35 minutes.\u00a0 <\/span>Less
\nsensitive to smudging when handled quickly and the scent was wonderful.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

1:1 \u2013 V. Coconut\/Candelilla \u2013 <\/b>Firm,
\nshiny, and fully melted in 40 minutes.\u00a0
\n<\/span>No nicks or smudges!\u00a0 <\/span>The EO scent
\nheld ok, though was less pronounced than the above 2 tarts. \u00a0<\/span>These would be likely to hold up well even if stacked
\ntogether in cello bags.<\/p>\n

The formulas
\nwith higher ratios of Candelilla wax looked
\n<\/i>great, and there were no visible cracks in the tarts themselves, but they were
\ndisappointing overall.\u00a0 <\/span>The melt took too
\nlong.<\/p>\n

\nRose, Geranium and Patchouli<\/p>\n
