The company originally <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/intel-ichip-making-facility-in-ohio-073608482.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:announced its plans for Ohio in 2022;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">announced its plans for Ohio in 2022<\/a>, with an ambitious opening set for 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Intel says it completed the &#8220;basement&#8221; level of its Ohio One project last quarter, which allows above-ground construction to get underway now. The $20 billion dollar project is technically split across two different chip fabs, dubbed Mod 1 and Mod 2, which won&#8217;t be completed at the same time. Mod 1 is now set to open in 2030, to &#8220;align the start of production of our fabs with the needs of our business and broader market demand,&#8221; according to Intel. It also delayed the groundbreaking of the project seemingly to incentivize the passing of the <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/president-biden-signs-chips-and-science-act-145820799.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:CHIPS Act;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">CHIPS Act<\/a> in 2022, according to <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/06\/22\/chips-act-funding-congress\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a report from The Washington Post;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">a report from <em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>More delays add to what&#8217;s been a tumultuous period for Intel as a company. In December, <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/intels-ceo-pat-gelsinger-has-suddenly-retired-151410215.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:former CEO Pat Gelsinger was pushed out;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">former CEO Pat Gelsinger was pushed out<\/a>, likely because he wasn&#8217;t pulling-off Intel&#8217;s aggressive plans to expand chip production. Prior to that, the funding the company was set to receive through the CHIPS Act was <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/intels-chips-act-funding-cut-by-over-600-million-184518662.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:reduced by $600 million;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">reduced by $600 million<\/a>.
