This data is populated in to the <strong>Behavior<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Site Speed<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Page Timings<\/strong> report, and it\u2019s a very useful feature for optimizing your website.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2270 \/ 872;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/09\/page-timings.jpg\" title=\"Page Timings in Universal Analytics\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"872\" width=\"2270\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/09\/page-timings.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Page Timings in Universal Analytics\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, there\u2019s a murky underside to this generous feature. The way Page Timings collection works is that when <strong>Pageview<\/strong> hits are sent from the site, a sample of these (1% by default) are automatically followed by a <code>timing<\/code> hit which includes page performance data grabbed from the Navigation Timing API.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1326 \/ 326;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/09\/pageview-timing.jpg\" title=\"Pageview and timing hit in network\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"326\" width=\"1326\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/09\/pageview-timing.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Pageview and timing hit in network\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>So far so good. This is how it\u2019s supposed to work. If you\u2019ve set <code>siteSpeedSampleRate<\/code> to 100, the first pageview request of every page will be automatically followed by this timing hit.<\/p>\n<p>However, the timing hit copies its information from the pageview hit. Basically, all the Custom Dimensions and Custom Metrics are copied from the pageview. Luckily, things like Enhanced Ecommerce metadata are not copied into the timing hit.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2044 \/ 1274;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/09\/pageview-timing-compared.jpg\" title=\"Pageview and Timing compared\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1274\" width=\"2044\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/09\/pageview-timing-compared.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Pageview and Timing compared\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, the timing hit below the pageview has the same Custom Dimension and the same Custom Metric as the Pageview hit. This is annoying, especially if you use hit-scoped Custom Dimensions or pretty much any type of Custom Metrics. I consider <code>customTask<\/code> to be one of the most versatile features recently added to analytics.js.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll use <code>customTask<\/code> to check if the hit type is a timing hit, and if it is, we\u2019ll make sure no Custom Dimensions and Custom Metrics are sent with the hit.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"analyticsjs\">analytics.js<\/h3>\n<p>This is what the situation is with analytics.js <strong>before<\/strong> you make the change:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">ga(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'create'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'UA-12345-1'<\/span>, {siteSpeedSampleRate: <span style=\"color:#099\">100<\/span>});\nga(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'set'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'dimension1'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'My Value'<\/span>);\nga(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'send'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'pageview'<\/span>, {metric1: <span style=\"color:#099\">20<\/span>);\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>This creates a tracker, sets a Custom Dimension, and then sends a pageview request with a Custom Metric. Since you\u2019re sampling Page Timings at 100%, the pageview hit will be instantly followed by a timing hit that contains these two custom definitions, too.<\/p>\n<p>To fix it, this is what you\u2019ll do:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">ga(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'create'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'UA-12345-1'<\/span>, {siteSpeedSampleRate: <span style=\"color:#099\">100<\/span>});\nga(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'set'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'dimension1'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'My Value'<\/span>);\n\nga(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'set'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'customTask'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(model) {\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> tempFieldObject = {};\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> i = <span style=\"color:#099\">1<\/span>;\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">if<\/span>(model.get(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'hitType'<\/span>) === <span style=\"color:#a50\">'timing'<\/span>) {\n    <span style=\"color:#00a\">while<\/span> (i !== <span style=\"color:#099\">201<\/span>) {\n      tempFieldObject[<span style=\"color:#a50\">'dimension'<\/span> + i] = <span style=\"color:#00a\">undefined<\/span>;\n      tempFieldObject[<span style=\"color:#a50\">'metric'<\/span> + i] = <span style=\"color:#00a\">undefined<\/span>;\n      i++;\n    }\n    model.set(tempFieldObject);\n  }\n});\n\nga(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'send'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'pageview'<\/span>, {metric1: <span style=\"color:#099\">20<\/span>});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>This clears all the possible Custom Dimensions and Custom Metrics from the timing hit, and thus data inflation is avoided.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"google-tag-manager\">Google Tag Manager<\/h3>\n<p>To fix this in <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\/\">Google Tag Manager<\/a>, you\u2019ll need a <strong>Custom JavaScript Variable<\/strong>, and you\u2019ll need to add a new field in your Page View tag.<\/p>\n<p>The Custom JavaScript Variable has the following code:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">return<\/span> <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(model) {\n    <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> tempFieldObject = {};\n    <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> i = <span style=\"color:#099\">1<\/span>;\n    <span style=\"color:#00a\">if<\/span>(model.get(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'hitType'<\/span>) === <span style=\"color:#a50\">'timing'<\/span>) {\n      <span style=\"color:#00a\">while<\/span> (i !== <span style=\"color:#099\">201<\/span>) {\n        tempFieldObject[<span style=\"color:#a50\">'dimension'<\/span> + i] = <span style=\"color:#00a\">undefined<\/span>;\n        tempFieldObject[<span style=\"color:#a50\">'metric'<\/span> + i] = <span style=\"color:#00a\">undefined<\/span>;\n        i++;\n      }\n      model.set(tempFieldObject);\n    }\n  };\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>And then you add it to your tag like this:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1774 \/ 1166;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/09\/google-tag-manager-tag.jpg\" title=\"Google Tag Manager tag\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1166\" width=\"1774\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2017\/09\/google-tag-manager-tag.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Google Tag Manager tag\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Whichever method you use, the <code>customTask<\/code> implementation will purge all Custom Dimensions and Custom Metrics from the automatically generated timing hit.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>This was just a quick tip to fix a potential data integrity issue on your site. Granted, it\u2019s rare for you to run into problems with the Custom Dimension duplication (unless you use it against the <code>ga:hits<\/code> metric), but on an aggregate level the Custom Metrics inflation can be troublesome.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the only thing where the Site Speed Sample Rate can wreak havoc on your data. With Google Tag Manager and \u201cvirtual\u201d pageviews, you might be inflating your page timing data by a great deal, and I\u2019ve written about how to solve this issue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/site-speed-sample-rate-multiple-page-views\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Note also that these are client-side fixes to something that, in my opinion, should be prevented by analytics.js to start with. I don\u2019t understand why the Page Timing hit just copies everything from the pageview.
