{"id":115313,"date":"2025-02-28T13:36:14","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T13:36:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/democratic-senators-block-archives-board-appointment-reform-bill\/"},"modified":"2025-02-28T13:36:14","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T13:36:14","slug":"democratic-senators-block-archives-board-appointment-reform-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=115313","title":{"rendered":"Democratic Senators block Archives Board appointment reform bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Alabama Senate passed two out of the 13 bills on their calendar Thursday after Democratic Senators sustained a filibuster on the floor to contest a proposed bill that would reform the way the Board of Trustees for the Alabama Department of Archives and History is appointed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the board comprises two members from each congressional district, two at-large members, and the governor. The trustees vote on board members who are then confirmed by the Senate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alison.legislature.state.al.us\/files\/pdf\/SearchableInstruments\/2025RS\/SB5-int.pdf\">SB5<\/a>, sponsored by Sen. Chris Elliott, R-Josephine, would add the governor as a voting member of the board and two additional at-large members appointed by the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore. The bill proposes that all board members be appointed by the state\u2019s executive and legislative leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The changes would be phased in as vacancies arise. There are currently three vacancies on the 17-member board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, and Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, used Senate rules to protest the archives bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Democrats stalled on legislation introduced by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, which would require state buildings to install adult-sized changing tables, the bill ultimately passed in a unanimous 27-0 vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smitherman read from the Alabama Department of Archives and History\u2019s fiscal report from 2024 during his time on the floor, emphasizing the work that could be jeopardized.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement.
