You probably started your practice to secure freedom and success\u2014so why does it feel so relentless?
Running your own accounting practice can be rewarding. That\u2019s something I often hear from accountants I interview for the Accountants\u2019 Success Secrets Podcast. Especially those who see success as something other than just \u2018getting bigger.\u2019<\/p>\n
For them, success isn\u2019t about constant growth. It\u2019s about:
\u2714 Enjoying the work they do.
\u2714 Earning enough (without endless stress).
\u2714 Choosing their hours.
\u2714 Working with clients they actually like.
\u2714 Getting paid what they\u2019re worth.<\/p>\n
Some got there through trial and error. Others say they were \u2018lucky.\u2019 Many credit a mentor, a coach, or a guiding influence along the way.<\/p>\n
When accountants book a call with me I tend to hear a different story. Some are struggling, others have a moderately successful practice but\u2026
\u274c They feel like they\u2019re constantly chasing their tail.
\u274c They\u2019ve fallen out of love with their work.
\u274c They just need enough new good clients to feel comfortable again.<\/p>\n
Over the years I have concluded that the difference between those who are struggling and those who are thriving isn\u2019t a matter of just working harder. Doing more of what\u2019s not working isn\u2019t much help. If you want things to be different, you need to do different things yourself. The right things, that will help you secure the success you want.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s different for everyone. No two mentoring conversations are the same. But there are some fundamentals that everyone needs to get right. Nail these, and you\u2019ll feel more in control, more confident, and less overwhelmed.<\/p>\n
Some of the accountants I speak with can go off and make these changes themselves. And some prefer the idea of the ongoing support and encouragement they trust I will provide.<\/p>\n
1. Get things done\u2014without drowning in them<\/strong>
The most successful accountants don\u2019t just work harder; they work smarter. If your to-do list feels endless, it\u2019s time to take control:<\/p>\n\ud83d\udd39 Be ruthless\u2014ditch distractions and focus on what actually moves the needle.
\ud83d\udd39 Set clear, specific goals\u2014and track them so you don\u2019t lose momentum.
\ud83d\udd39 Block out time to work \u2018on\u2019 the practice (and protect it like a client or mentoring meeting).
\ud83d\udd39 Automate repetitive tasks\u2014your time is too valuable to waste.<\/p>\n
If you\u2019re always \u2018busy\u2019 but not making progress, something needs to change.<\/p>\n
2. Build your self-confidence<\/strong>
Self-confidence or self-belief isn\u2019t a \u2018nice-to-have\u2019 \u2013 it\u2019s the foundation of a strong practice. The way you see yourself affects everything, from pricing to handling difficult clients. Strengthen it by:<\/p>\n\ud83d\udd39 Recognising your wins\u2014however small (they all count).
\ud83d\udd39 Surrounding yourself with supporters, not drainers.
\ud83d\udd39 Challenging negative self-talk (would you speak to a friend that way?).
\ud83d\udd39 Setting boundaries\u2014especially with clients who don\u2019t respect your time.<\/p>\n

NB: Beware the Dunning-Kruger effect. This is what happens when you don\u2019t know enough to realise what you don\u2019t know!\u00a0 Excessive self-confidence is dangerous as it results in you over-estimating your abilities and knowledge. This can lead to costly mistakes, negligence claims and huge amounts of rectification time.\u00a0 Some of my more successful (and outwardly confident) clients still like to use me as a sounding board to sense check big decisions.<\/p>\n
3. Make time for yourself<\/strong>
I\u2019ve never spoken with an accountant who started their own practice to work longer hours for less freedom. So I\u2019m sure you didn\u2019t do that either. If that\u2019s how it feels though, it\u2019s time to reset the balance:<\/p>\n\ud83d\udd39 Set (and stick to) clear working hours\u2014your personal time is valuable.
\ud83d\udd39 Book personal time into your calendar, not just \u2018when work allows.\u2019
\ud83d\udd39 Review your client list \u2013 are they the right ones for the business you want?
\ud83d\udd39 Say \u2018no\u2019 more often. It opens the door to better opportunities.<\/p>\n
Your business shouldn\u2019t be draining you. If it is, let\u2019s fix that.<\/p>\n
Time to take stock<\/strong>
Pause. Reflect. Try even one of these ideas\u2014and see what shifts.<\/p>\nBecause running your own practice should be fulfilling, not just relentless.<\/p>\n
