While they may not impact most of the flights you see on Flightradar24, they mark a significant shift in how certain aircraft can navigate across the Atlantic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To understand the impact, let\u2019s start with a quick refresher on what the NAT HLA is and how traffic moves across it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The NAT HLA: A Unique and Complex Airspace<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The NAT HLA spans FL285 to FL420 over the North Atlantic, connecting Europe and North America. These routes relied on ground-based navigation aids (VORs and NDBs) and had some limited VHF coverage.<\/p>\n<p>These routes got their name from WWII-era military flights\u2014propeller aircraft (often made of spruce) had blue-painted propeller tips, which helped make them less visible in the air while still preventing personnel from walking into them on the ground.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45d0083 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"45d0083\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<h2>What\u2019s Changing on March 20, 2025?<\/h2>\n<p>When the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icao.int\/eurnat\/eur%20and%20nat%20documents\/forms\/allitems.aspx?RootFolder=%2FEURNAT%2FEUR%20and%20NAT%20Documents%2FNAT%20Documents%2FNAT%20Documents%2FNAT%20Doc%20007&amp;FolderCTID=0x012000DAF95319EADD9946B510C5D7B595637D00AA5EB47B299B9A4BAD1968B24E18655C&amp;View=%7BE414A939%2D5FB4%2D4CB9%2D9139%2D466754ED0FA9%7D\">NAT Doc 007 <\/a>(the ICAO governing document for NAT HLA operations) takes effect, the Blue Spruce Routes will be eliminated. Instead, they will have to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fly above FL420 (unlikely for most aircraft).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Descend below FL285 (which significantly increases fuel burn).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Re-route around the NAT HLA entirely (again significantly increases fuel burn).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Spotting This on Flightradar24<\/h2>\n<p>If you notice an aircraft approaching the NAT HLA boundary and then descending below FL285, this could indicate that t<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, off track.<\/li>\n<li>Climb or descend 300 feet (to avoid conflicts).\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>On FlightRadar24, if you see an aircraft turning 30\u00b0 off track and shifting 300 feet vertically, this is
