These folks in Osage get that compliment this time. And no, it is not for their KCBS sanctioned barbecue cook off. It is for their event the night before the barbecue competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8379 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Osage-City-KS.png\" alt=\"Osage City, KS logo\" width=\"276\" height=\"79\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve all heard of \u201cThe Bite of\u2026\u201d pick a city, or the \u201cTaste of\u2026\u201d pick a different city. The format is typically your local restaurateurs serve sample size portions of their fare at a good price. Well, if you have spent 20 years hosting a state championship barbecue cooking competition, the night before the event stands out as a really good time to have your, in this case, \u2018Taste of Osage\u2019. Which is what they do, including barbecue favorites, moink balls and hot mess mac \u2018n\u2019 cheese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This year it is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4\/5\/2024 \u2013 4\/6\/2024<\/p>\n<p>Smoke in the Spring<br \/>517 South 1st Street<br \/>Osage City, KS 66523<br \/>(785) 528-4610<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/event\/smoke-in-the-spring\/mailto:rec@osagecity.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rec@osagecity.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8380 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/KCBS-judging-plate.jpg\" alt=\"bbq in KCBS plate\" width=\"1200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/KCBS-judging-plate.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/KCBS-judging-plate-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/KCBS-judging-plate-1024x256.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/KCBS-judging-plate-768x192.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This event is a Master Series event for KCBS and a State Championship event. In 2023 over one hundred teams competed for a share of $25,000 in prize money. The Master Series categories were Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork, and Brisket. The Grand Championship team, Janky Leg BBQ, took first in the ribs and placed in other categories. The event also included a competition in the Turkey Smoke Series.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8381 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/KCBS-Grand-Champion.jpg\" alt=\"Janky Leg BBQ KCBS Grand Champion\" width=\"1284\" height=\"656\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s the alternative cooking category, the \u201cKid\u2019s Q\u201d, divided by age groups into two categories. Just the right opportunity to get the next generation of pitmasters smoking and sweating for this thing called barbecue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8382 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/squirrelcookoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/KCBS-kids-Champion.jpg\" alt=\"Kid\u2019s Q KCBS Champion\" width=\"1260\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This will be the 21<sup>st<\/sup> year for Osage to host the Smoke in the Spring event. The first night activities typically last late, with Fireworks after 9, and a band playing well after that. The venue, Jones Park, is a very well suited to this kind of event. It\u2019s spacious with great parking, also being home to most of the city\u2019s athletic fields, swimming pools, community building along with fairgrounds and such.
