With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/companies-cut-ties-with-dog-race\/\">sponsors dropping<\/a> and dogs dying, the race is in dire straits.<\/p>\n<p>PETA is calling for the Iditarod to be permanently canceled and for its remaining sponsors to cut ties with it. <strong>Stay tuned for breaking updates from the 2025 Iditarod and PETA\u2019s protests against the event.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Iditarod Facts: The Sordid Legacy of One of the World\u2019s Cruelest Races<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>During the Iditarod, mushers force dogs to run about 100 miles per day through biting winds, blinding snowstorms, subzero temperatures, and frozen terrain<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> The dogs often suffer from cut and bruised feet, bleeding stomach ulcers, strained muscles, and other painful injuries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The leading cause of death for dogs in the\u00a0Iditarod\u00a0is aspiration pneumonia\u2014caused by inhaling their own vomit.<\/strong>\u00a0Up to half the dogs who start the race don\u2019t finish it\u2014they are pulled out of the race due to exhaustion, illness, or injury, or they die on the trail.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Countless other dogs have died during the off-season. <\/strong>When mushers aren\u2019t forcing them to run, humans neglect, abuse, and chain dogs outside in below-freezing weather, as revealed in <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.peta.org\/iditarod-kennel-neglect\/\">PETA\u2019s expos\u00e9 of well-known mushers\u2019 kennels<\/a>. Before the 2024 Iditarod even began, five dogs were killed, and eight others were injured after being hit by snowmobiles in two separate training incidents in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/news-releases\/peta-statement-dogs-killed-in-dallas-seaveys-quest-for-iditarod-glory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">November<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/news-releases\/peta-statement-at-least-two-more-dogs-dead-as-iditarod-death-toll-climbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">December 2023<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There\u2019s no retirement plan for dogs used in the\u00a0Iditarod.<\/strong> Humans have shot, bludgeoned to death, or abandoned those deemed no longer useful.<\/li>\n<li>Last year\u2019s winner,\u00a0<strong>Dallas Seavey,<\/strong>\u00a0and his father,\u00a0<strong>Mitch Seavey<\/strong>, who is set to compete in this year\u2019s race, literally wrote the book\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/quotes-from-iditarod-champions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two books<\/a>, in fact\u2014on beating, depriving, and neglecting dogs in pursuit of an\u00a0Iditarod\u00a0championship. Here\u2019s just one appalling passage from the books:\u00a0<em>\u201cWhen he doesn\u2019t respond, stop, go up to the dog, pull back on his tug line, and with a pre-selected willow stick about \u00bd inch in diameter and three feet long, give him a good whack on the butt as you repeat the command. You have to whack him good, too. Don\u2019t just hit the tug line or something. If you are going to bother with this, it\u2019s got to sting.<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>The race is hit with scandal after scandal year-round.<\/strong>\u00a0Months after the conclusion of last year\u2019s race,\u00a0Iditarod\u00a0officials announced that musher Joshua Robbins\u2019 27<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place finish in 2024 had been vacated amid dog-drugging allegations. Despite requiring Robbins to return the prize money he won,\u00a0<strong>officials welcomed him to apply to participate in future races.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>According to official estimates, the 2025 Iditarod is the longest since 2009, stretching 1128 miles. <\/strong>Following backlash from mushers and fans concerned about dangerous trail conditions, the\u00a0Iditarod moved its restart location from Willow to Fairbanks\u2014after initially failing to take any action to protect the dogs from the dangers posed by the lack of snow. Mushers were apparently silenced on this issue, which comes as no surprise considering the\u00a0Iditarod\u2019s use of gag rules to attempt to avoid criticism and conceal information that would be damaging to the race\u2019s reputation (see Rule 53\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.iditarod.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2025-Iditarod-Race-Rules.pdf?3a790f80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>). <\/li>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0Iditarod\u00a0isn\u2019t about Alaskan history\u2014it\u2019s about cash prizes and bragging rights for mushers.<\/strong>\u00a0Proponents of the\u00a0Iditarod\u00a0have shamelessly co-opted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/nome-serum-run-1925\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Serum Run<\/a>\u2014a one-time relay organized in response to a health emergency\u2014in an attempt to glamorize a modern-day event that subjects dogs to\u00a0<em>even greater\u00a0<\/em>suffering. Dogs used during the Serum Run took turns in a relay to deliver an emergency supply of diphtheria serum to Nome, Alaska<strong>\u2014meaning they were never forced to run 1,000 miles or more, as they are now.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/companies-cut-ties-with-dog-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Numerous companies<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0have cut ties with the race<\/strong>\u00a0after reviewing PETA\u2019s documentation of cruelty and hearing from the public. These include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/blog\/victory-millennium-hotels-iditarod-sponsor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Millennium Hotels and Resorts<\/strong><\/a><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/blog\/victory-exxonmobil-iditarod-sponsorship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ExxonMobil<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(which was a major\u00a0Iditarod\u00a0sponsor, giving $250,000 a year),\u00a0<strong>Jack Daniel\u2019s, Coca-Cola, Chrysler, Wells Fargo, and Alaska Airlines.\u00a0<\/strong>GCI (owned by Liberty Media), a major sponsor for years, appears to be distancing itself from the race, as its logo has been removed from the race website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-602x339.jpg\" alt=\"PETA supporters protest at 2024 Iditarod\" class=\"wp-image-1119088\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-602x339.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-375x212.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iditarod-2024-demo-rotated.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Iditarod\u2019s Death Toll Will Continue to Climb Until It Ends<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Iditarod\u2019s remaining sponsors should be ashamed of the blood on their hands.
