However, at some point you\u2019ll want to configure the <code>dataLayer<\/code> structure, too (read more about <code>dataLayer<\/code> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/data-layer\/\">here<\/a>). There are two ways to do it: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/datalayer-declaration-vs-push\/\">right way and the wrong way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll see what happens if you do it the wrong way, how to identify the issue, and how to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"simmer\"><br \/>\n  <span class=\"close\">X<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    <span class=\"fa fa-md fa-bell\"\/><br \/>\n    <strong>The Simmer Newsletter<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Subscribe to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/newsletter\/\">Simmer newsletter<\/a> to get the latest news and content from Simo Ahava into your email inbox!\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-71-page-view-event-missing-and-gtms-triggers-dont-work\">Tip 71: Page View event missing, and GTM\u2019s triggers don\u2019t work?<\/h2>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 960 \/ 540;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/02\/missing-page-view-event-broken-triggers.jpg\" title=\"Fix missing page view event and broken triggers\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"540\" width=\"960\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/02\/missing-page-view-event-broken-triggers.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Fix missing page view event and broken triggers\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you open <strong>Preview<\/strong> mode on your site, and look at the list of events in the left-hand side navigation, you should <strong>always<\/strong> see the following three GTM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/trigger-guide-google-tag-manager\/#2-technical-overview\">default events<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Page View<\/strong> &#8211; This is the event pushed into <code>dataLayer<\/code> in Google Tag Manager\u2019s container snippet (event name is <code>gtm.js<\/code>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>DOM Ready<\/strong> &#8211; This is the event pushed into <code>dataLayer<\/code> once the page HTML has been rendered by the browser (event name is <code>gtm.dom<\/code>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Window Loaded<\/strong> &#8211; This is the event pushed into <code>dataLayer<\/code> once the page and all linked resources have completed load, execution, and render (event name is <code>gtm.load<\/code>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You should always see (2) and (3) &#8211; there\u2019s very little you can do to mess these up. But it\u2019s possible you won\u2019t see the <strong>Page View<\/strong> event. If you don\u2019t it means you\u2019ve <strong>messed up the <code>dataLayer<\/code> implementation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Google Tag Manager establishes the <code>dataLayer<\/code> construct with its own <code>.push()<\/code> method in the JavaScript library that represents your container. The <code>gtm.js<\/code> event is pushed into <code>dataLayer<\/code> in the container snippet, and it is used to trigger any tags that use the Page View or All Pages triggers.<\/p>\n<p>The main reason for not seeing the <strong>Page View<\/strong> events is simple. You have <strong>overwritten the <code>dataLayer<\/code> modified in the container snippet with a brand new array<\/strong>. You do it like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-html\" data-lang=\"html\">  <span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\"><!-- Google Tag Manager container snippet here --><\/span>\n  (function...)\n  <span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\"><!-- Google Tag Manager container snippet ends --><\/span>\n<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">head<\/span>&gt;\nbody&gt;\n  script&gt;\n    <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> dataLayer = [{\n      someVariable: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'someValue'<\/span>\n    }];\n  <span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>See the problem? By using the syntax <code>var dataLayer = ...<\/code>, you are resetting the <code>dataLayer<\/code> variable to a new Array, thus overwriting anything that was in it before (such as Google Tag Manager\u2019s own listener). Since you overwrite <code>dataLayer<\/code>, it no longer works properly with GTM, and a typical symptom is that <strong>GTM\u2019s triggers don\u2019t work anymore<\/strong>, either. So if you have a Click \/ All Elements trigger on the site and nothing is pushed to <code>dataLayer<\/code> when you click around, chances are you\u2019ve overwritten GTM\u2019s <code>dataLayer<\/code> with your reinitialization.<\/p>\n<p>How to fix it? Simple. Always check for the existence of <code>dataLayer<\/code> before adding items to it, and always add items to <code>dataLayer<\/code> only with the <code>push()<\/code> command.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\">\/\/ WRONG! NEVER USE THIS:\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\"\/><span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> dataLayer = [{\n  pageType: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'home'<\/span>\n}];\n\n<span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\">\/\/ CORRECT! ALWAYS USE THIS:\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\"\/><span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer = <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer || [];\n<span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer.push({\n  pageType: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'home'<\/span>\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is a popular topic on this blog and many others simply because it\u2019s so easy to screw it up.
