So this week I\u2019ll AmericanStudy that beautiful spot and<br \/>\nother Alaskan places, people, and stories!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">On three<br \/>\nforces of nature who together helped preserve Glacier Bay (on the 100th anniversary of its designation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">1)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glba\/learn\/historyculture\/huna-tribal-house-project.htm\">The<br \/>\nHuna Tlingit<\/a>: As with every history in Alaska\u2014and every history in America\u2014the<br \/>\nstory of Glacier Bay is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glba\/learn\/historyculture\/glacier-bay-as-homeland.htm\">inextricably<br \/>\ninterconnected<\/a> with the worst and best of Native American histories. We can\u2019t<br \/>\ncelebrate its natural beauty, nor its evolution from endangered site to National<br \/>\nMonument to (when Jimmy Carter signed the act <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glba\/learn\/historyculture\/from-monument-to-park-1980.htm#:~:text=For%20decades%20there%20had%20been,Alsek%20River%20and%20Dry%20Bay.\">into<br \/>\nlaw in 1980<\/a>) National Park, without recognizing and mourning the removal of<br \/>\nthe Huna Tlingit people from the area. But we can\u2019t only mourn, either\u2014even before<br \/>\nthe Huna Tlingit were able to return to and reconnect with Glacier Bay in<br \/>\nrecent decades, as traced in the first hyperlink above, their legacy was<br \/>\neverywhere in this iconic place, and defining in shaping it across centuries if<br \/>\nnot millenia. Every visitor to Glacier Bay must remember and engage with that<br \/>\nworst and best of its, and our, histories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">2)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glba\/learn\/historyculture\/john-muir.htm\">John Muir<\/a>:<br \/>\nSpeaking of the worst and best. As that hyperlinked article notes, Muir relied<br \/>\non Tlingit guides for his exploration of Glacier Bay; yet despite his <a href=\"https:\/\/vault.sierraclub.org\/john_muir_exhibit\/life\/racist-or-admirer-of-native-americans-raymond-bennett.aspx\">unquestionable<br \/>\nadmiration<\/a> for Native Americans, Muir was also far too often a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/sierra-club-grapples-founder-john-muirs-racism-180975404\/\">purveyor<br \/>\nof racist attitudes<\/a> towards these American communities. That\u2019s all part of<br \/>\nMuir\u2019s story and legacy, and of what he found and advocated for in Glacier Bay.<br \/>\nBut at the same time, I don\u2019t know of any more beautiful writing about America\u2019s<br \/>\nnatural wonders than Muir\u2019s chapter \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/vault.sierraclub.org\/john_muir_exhibit\/writings\/travels_in_alaska\/chapter_17.aspx\">In<br \/>\nCamp at Glacier Bay<\/a>\u201d in his book <i><a href=\"https:\/\/vault.sierraclub.org\/john_muir_exhibit\/writings\/travels_in_alaska\/\">Travels<br \/>\nin Alaska<\/a> <\/i>(1915), among the many other places in that book where he<br \/>\nwrites movingly about Glacier Bay. As he did with so much of America\u2019s<br \/>\nwilderness, Muir\u2019s perspective on Alaska helped his audiences see this place<br \/>\ndifferently, a vital step toward preserving rather than simply exploiting our<br \/>\nnatural wonders. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">3)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glba\/learn\/historyculture\/william-s-cooper-a-vision-of-preservation.htm\">William<br \/>\nS. Cooper<\/a>: Muir was an advocate for all of our natural spaces, but the plant<br \/>\necologist and activist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glba\/learn\/historyculture\/the-scientists.htm\">William<br \/>\nS. Cooper<\/a> made Glacier Bay his specific, lifelong focus. Cooper first<br \/>\nvisited Glacier Bay a year after Muir\u2019s book was published, fell in love, and<br \/>\nmade the area <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/glacier-bay-william-cooper-100-year-old-plant-succession-study\">a<br \/>\nliving laboratory for his researches<\/a> for the rest of his groundbreaking<br \/>\ncareer. But he also and especially became a determined advocate for the<br \/>\npreservation of Glacier Bay, writing to anyone and everyone about the<br \/>\nimportance of not turning this natural wonder over to those who saw only profit<br \/>\nin it (and <a href=\"https:\/\/npshistory.com\/publications\/glba\/adhi\/chap8.htm\">continuing<br \/>\nthose efforts<\/a> for decades after the 1920s act).
