Britt, Tuberville celebrate confirmation of controversial FBI Director Kash Patel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Last Friday, Kash Patel was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/kash-patel-sworn-9th-fbi-director\">sworn into office<\/a> after the U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed him to be the next Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Patel is among President Donald Trump\u2019s most controversial appointments, having faced sharp criticism from both Democrats and former Trump allies since his nomination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Patel\u2019s nomination was first announced, Trump\u2019s former national security advisor John Bolton compared Patel to the leader of Joseph Stalin\u2019s secret police in the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had previously attempted to appoint Patel as deputy FBI director in the twilight of his first term in office, but then-Attorney General William Barr told the White House that Patel would become deputy director \u201cover [his] dead body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other critics have framed Patel\u2019s appointment as an attempt by the Trump administration to weaponize the FBI against the president\u2019s political opponents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe irony of this is that they all complained about the politicization of the FBI, and here Trump is putting in someone who\u2019s going to do just that,\u201d Charles Kupperman, Trump\u2019s former deputy national security advisor, said of Patel\u2019s nomination. \u201cThese are not reforms, they are punitive measures from a guy trying to be the enforcer for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patel has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/02\/us\/politics\/kash-patel-fbi.html\">previously advocated<\/a>\u00a0for firing the \u201ctop ranks of the FBI,\u201d encouraging Congress to demand testimony exposing \u201cevery single bit of filth and corruption\u201d at the agency, and withholding the bureau\u2019s funding \u201cuntil the documents come in.\u201d He has also voiced support for prosecuting leakers and journalists and replacing national security workers with \u201cpeople who won\u2019t undermine the president\u2019s agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cPatel\u2019s confirmation makes a conspiracy theorist and Donald Trump loyalist the federal government\u2019s top crime-fighter,\u201d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/the-reidout\/reidout-blog\/kash-patel-fbi-senate-confirmed-rcna190236\">MSNBC\u2019s Ja\u2019han Jones<\/a> last week. \u201cPatel has issued public threats to go after Trump\u2019s perceived political enemies, including publishing a list of members of the so-called deep state he\u2019d investigate if given power. He has also openly promoted the QAnon conspiracy theory and shown support for the violent insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol to overturn the 2020 election on Jan. 6, 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the apparent bipartisan concern over Patel\u2019s nomination, Senate Republicans overwhelmingly supported his confirmation, with 51 of 53 GOP Senators voting to approve the appointment. Following his confirmation, U.S. Sens. Katie Britt, R-Ala., and Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., sent a letter to Patel, congratulating him on his new position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations on being confirmed as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,\u201d the senators wrote. \u201cWe are grateful for your willingness to serve our country. Your commitment to end political weaponization by law enforcement is essential to restoring public trust in the FBI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Britt and Tuberville then took the opportunity to ask Patel to use his authority as FBI Director to assign additional personnel to the Redstone Arsenal, a U.S. Army base in Huntsville which also houses a multitude of other government agencies, including thousands of FBI employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to represent the great state of Alabama, home to Redstone Arsenal which is the epicenter of the FBI\u2019s technological capabilities and advanced training,\u201d the senators continued. \u201cAs threats to our nation become more sophisticated, FBI-Redstone Arsenal\u2019s operations will need to continue growing. The North Campus is well prepared to support this mission by delivering state-of-the-art training to address cyber threats, emerging technologies, and the Field Offices\u2019 investigative efforts. The South Campus is currently under construction and will host even more capacity to address current and future threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the senators requested that Patel assign an additional 1,000 FBI employees to Redstone \u201cas a first step to ultimately filling the approximately 4,000 open slots the campus can accommodate.\u201d In doing so, the senators claimed that Patel would be sending a message to the United States\u2019 adversaries \u201cthat the FBI\u2019s leadership is back to prioritizing the pressing threats to our homeland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to working closely with you to Make America Safe Again.
