The First Few Days of February<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Falling midway between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, the beginning of
\nFebruary brings the return of light and life to the Northern Hemisphere.\u00a0
\n<\/span>There are many celebrations covering a variety of spiritual traditions.\u00a0
<\/span><\/p>\n

Imbolc,<\/span><\/b> a Gaelic
\nword that means \u201cewe\u2019s milk\u201d is a Celtic feast day that signifies the beginning
\nof spring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It has been widely observed by Gaels for centuries and it begins on
\nthe first evening of February, ending on the second. \u00a0<\/span>Additionally, Feb 2 is Brigid\u2019s feast<\/b>.\u00a0 <\/span>In ancient beliefs, Brigid is a goddess.\u00a0 <\/span>Later, there is Saint Brigid<\/b>, the founder of the first monastery in County Kildare
\nin Ireland, b<\/span>orn in 450 AD of a pagan father and a Christian
\nmother.\u00a0 <\/span>Both the goddess and the saint
\nare associated with the spring season, fertility, healing,
\npoetry and blacksmithing.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>As\u00a0 <\/span>goddess of the <\/span>hearth<\/span><\/em>, the
\ngoddess is equated to Greco-Roman Hestia-Vesta, and there is an eternal fire
\nthat burns in her honor.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Holy wells were visited,
\nspring cleaning begins, and fire and light are part of the celebration. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


\n
Candlemas<\/span><\/b> is a Christian holy day commemorating the
\npresentation of Jesus at the Temple, ending Christmas celebrations 40 days
\nafter Christmas.\u00a0 <\/span>Many modern folks take
\ndown their holiday decorations on New Year\u2019s Day, others wait until the 12th<\/sup>
\nnight, and still others wait for Candlemas. It is also a time to take candles
\nto the church to be blessed, mostly a symbolic act in these days of
\nelectricity, but the candles of an entire year were blessed on Candlemas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

February 2 is Groundhog Day<\/b>, and in
\nPA, that\u2019s a pretty big deal.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

When I was
\nlittle, I really believed that the groundhog knew.\u00a0 <\/span>Maryanne\u2019s husband\u2019s birthday is Feb 1,
\notherwise known as Groundhog Day eve. If the groundhog sees his shadow (sunny
\nday) he will be frightened and go back to sleep for 6 weeks.\u00a0 <\/span>If it\u2019s cloudy, he stays out of the burrow
\nand winter is declared over.
\nIt is also when the Gaelic Cailleach<\/span><\/b> gathers firewood for the rest of the winter.\u00a0 <\/span>If she is asleep, she doesn\u2019t make the
\nweather bright and clear so that she can gather plenty, so the hope is for
\nclouds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2024, the Chinese
\nLunar New Year<\/b> is on February 10, and in China it is celebrated through
\nFebruary 17th, and ushers in the year of the Wood Dragon.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The date is different each year, as it
\ncoincides with the new moon.\u00a0 <\/span>There is
\nmuch feasting with unusual or hard to find delicacies, and families gather to
\nbegin the year together.\u00a0 <\/span>Here on the
\nhill, we found some moon cakes and have them waiting in the freezer!<\/p>\n

\u00a0 <\/span>I often think of how happy people must have
\nbeen to see the light returning!\u00a0 <\/span>I can
\nartificially light my environment, and am very glad of it.\u00a0 <\/span>
There are many, many traditional celebrations attached to all of these days, so
\nif you\u2019d like to start a new family tradition, perhaps you\u2019d like to choose one
\nand research the history and festival\/feasts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A craft that goes back centuries can be done together with the family, or as a

For your feast\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nlate winter\/early spring, available food is what has been stored over the winter.
\nTo celebrate any of these feasts, try to choose dishes that work with
\nthat.\u00a0 <\/span>Farm animals are \u201cfreshening\u201d by
\ngiving birth, renewing their milk supply. Dried fruit and flavorful nuts and
\nseeds are available. Root cellars kept apples, onions, garlics, potatoes,
\nwinter squash, and pumpkins, some cruciferous vegetables. A few greens could be
\nfound in sheltered areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seed
\nCake<\/span><\/b>
This is a traditional spicy pound cake that is served without icing.\u00a0 <\/span>Although caraway seeds are traditional,
\nfennel, sesame, pumpkin, poppy, coriander, sunflower, or others can be added or
\nsubstituted.<\/span><\/p>\n

1 C butter
\nsoftened (2 sticks)
1 C granulated sugar
3 eggs
2 C flour
1 T caraway seeds
1\/4 t ground nutmeg
1\/4 t ground cinnamon
1\/4 C brandy
4 t 10X sugar<\/span><\/p>\n

Preheat the oven
\nto 300\u00b0.
Line a 9 x 12 pan with parchment, OR grease well.
In a large mixing bowl cream together the butter and sugar until light and
\nfluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time, scraping down sides of bowl with each egg.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a second bowl,
\nblend dry ingredients.
Add half of the dry ingredients to the first bowl, stirring well.
Add the brandy and combine.
Add the remaining dry ingredients, blending just until mixed well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bake for 40 to 45
\nminutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
When cool, sift the 10X sugar over the top.<\/span><\/p>\n

Imbolc Incense<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/u><\/strong><\/div>\n

<\/strong>Make a <\/u>loose
\nincense to celebrate the new spring and growing season that\u2019s around the
\ncorner.\u00a0 <\/span>While blending the ingredients,
\nfocus on what you\u2019d like to see.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Abundant gardens, happy family, prosperity \u2013 anything at all, just as
\nyou might at the new year.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

1 part Copal
1 part Basil
1 part Dragons Blood
\u00bd \u00a0<\/span>part Lemon Peel
\u00bd part Chamomile<\/span><\/p>\n

You can substitute anything that represents fire or renewal to you.\u00a0 <\/span>For instance:
Calendula
frankincense
bay
violets
red santal
myrrh\u2026
You almost can\u2019t go wrong.\u00a0
\nTo burn, place a pinch of the mixture on a smoldering charcoal block.\u00a0 <\/span>Add more when it stops smoking if desired.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nlives, and there are lots of reasons to have them!<\/span><\/p>\n
