{"id":108692,"date":"2025-02-25T07:34:29","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T07:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/gtmtips-check-container-id-with-eventcallback\/"},"modified":"2025-02-25T07:34:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T07:34:29","slug":"gtmtips-check-container-id-with-eventcallback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=108692","title":{"rendered":"#GTMTips: Check Container ID With eventCallback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When you use the <code>dataLayer.push()<\/code> command on a page with a <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\/\">Google Tag Manager<\/a> container, you pass information to GTM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/data-layer\/\">internal data model<\/a> and potentially fire tags (if the <code>push()<\/code> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/add-the-event-key-to-datalayer-pushes\/\">contained an <code>event<\/code> key<\/a>). You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/hitcallback-eventcallback\/\">add the <code>eventCallback<\/code> key<\/a> to these pushes. The value of this key should be a function, and this function is then executed once the container finishes processing any tags that might have fired on that <code>dataLayer.push()<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>This is useful if you want to give Google Tag Manager time to complete its operations before proceeding with other actions on the page, for example.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a wrinkle, though. Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/multiple-gtm-containers-on-the-page\/\">Google Tag Manager supports adding multiple containers to the page<\/a>, the <code>eventCallback<\/code> is called once for every single container on the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don\u2019t use multiple containers on the page\u201d, I hear you exclaim. Good for you! However, if you are running an <a href=\"https:\/\/optimize.google.com\/\">Optimize<\/a> experiment on the page, or if you are also loading <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/gtagjs\/\">gtag.js<\/a>, <code>eventCallback<\/code> will be invoked once per each implementation thereof, too. Why? The <strong>Google Tag Manager container ID<\/strong> (e.g. <strong>GTM-12345<\/strong>) which invoked the <code>eventCallback<\/code> method will be automatically passed as a parameter to the function you have set up as the <code>eventCallback<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>If you have multiple containers on the page, <code>eventCallback<\/code> will fire once for each container, once they finish firing whatever tags the <code>dataLayer.push()<\/code> triggered. Each time a container invokes the <code>eventCallback<\/code> method, its container ID will be the argument.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, let\u2019s say I have three Google Tag Manager containers running on the site.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Google Tag Manager container with ID GTM-12345<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Google Optimize container with ID GTM-23456<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>gtag.js library collecting to UA-12345-1<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Next, I\u2019ll run the following code in the JavaScript console:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer = <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer || [];\n<span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer.push({\n  event: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'GTMEvent'<\/span>,\n  eventCallback: <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(containerId) {\n    console.log(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'Container ID: '<\/span> + containerId);\n  }\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The output in the console looks something like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-text\" data-lang=\"text\">Container ID: GTM-12345\nContainer ID: GTM-23456\nContainer ID: UA-12345-1<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, with each iteration of the callback, the container ID was automatically assigned as an argument to the function.
