The Gym Tide started the weekend off with a whimper, allowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/alabama\/all-things-bama\/alabama-gymnastics-loses-power-of-pink-meet-to-auburn-despite-season-best-score-01jmnrxnmhb9\">Auburn to win at Coleman for the first time in series history<\/a>. They did notch their highest score of the season to date, but are currently ranked only 17th. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollbamaroll.com\/2025\/2\/23\/24370880\/alabama-crimson-tide-softball-splits-with-virginia-tech-sweeps-cupcakes\">Softball had an OK weekend <\/a>and are currently ranked 21st. Neither of those programs are currently performing up to Alabama\u2019s usual lofty standards. <\/p>\n<p id=\"hee4pa\">Baseball had an interesting day at the Jacksonville Classic. They must have been watching the men\u2019s basketball team as they fell behind 10-0 to Ohio State early in the game. The pitching and defense locked in at that point though, and national Player of the Year candidate Justin Lebron hit not one, but two three run jacks to get them back into the game. Then, Will Hodo did this. <\/p>\n<p id=\"FF3CxM\">Lebron was named MVP of the invitational. <\/p>\n<p id=\"ToSRRU\">in what is becoming a theme, the women\u2019s basketball team fell behind by 16 to a terrible Auburn team before finding their way. But, they got it done. <\/p>\n<aside id=\"eXHWSN\">\n<\/aside>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"4NCLCA2JVNBDDEANZLAIWFTPTM\">In the second quarter, Alabama got cooking. The Tigers led by 16 points with 4:51 left in the half, when UA\u2019s offense finally arrived.<\/p>\n<p id=\"TJZTG3RSOZG3LGKOKA523BFRYY\">\u201cWe all kind of looked at each other and we\u2019re like \u2018Oh, this is on the five that are on the floor right now,\u2019\u2019 Alabama\u2019s Sarah Ashlee Barker said. \u201cLike, this is our fault. We\u2019ve done some things that we didn\u2019t practice. We did things that we don\u2019t need to do. We turned the ball over. We weren\u2019t getting defensive stops.<\/p>\n<p id=\"UIXBFFQR75EK7OZ7YKXGZS73SY\">\u201cSo there was nothing that coaches could say. It was us as a collective, as a team, that was like \u2018No, this is on us, we\u2019ve got to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"EzxElX\">That was the ladies\u2019 ninth SEC win, guaranteeing them a finish above .500 in league play with two left, against an elite LSU squad and at 18th ranked Oklahoma. <\/p>\n<p id=\"LioK4x\">Nate Oats made a little Alabama history this weekend. <\/p>\n<aside id=\"loVFbm\">\n<\/aside>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"2Z44KI3I55EIRPUCAJV5UWZK7A\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/alabamabasketball\/\">Alabama basketball\u2019s<\/a> win <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/alabamabasketball\/2025\/02\/3-takeaways-from-alabama-basketballs-bounce-back-win-over-kentucky.html\">over No. 17 Kentucky<\/a> on Saturday came with a cherry on top for Nate Oats. He scored his 26th win over an AP top 25 team throughout his tenure as head coach at Alabama, taking sole possession of UA\u2019s record in that department.<\/p>\n<p id=\"BI62GLS5EJETBCXETXMXA4QAHY\">Oats passed Wimp Sanderson, who had 25.<\/p>\n<p id=\"UERHMG5MEZFQVERNOQZFUDHYWU\">\u201cWimp did a really good job here, I\u2019m guessing that the SEC is a lot better now so there\u2019s a lot more opportunities than he probably had,\u201d Oats, in his sixth season as the Tide\u2019s head coach, said after the win. \u201cAnd when they give you the opportunity, you take advantage of them and try to get it done. We don\u2019t have enough because we had a chance to get two more in the last two games before this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"39kF6d\">Maybe they can cure the slow start infliction that seems to have spread throughout the athletic department. <\/p>\n<p id=\"6CXYU9\">On3 has some of those anonymous sauces for you, ready to spill about the early enrollees. <\/p>\n<aside id=\"xjd3sK\">\n<\/aside>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"hZx2pG\"><strong>Alabama:<\/strong> \u201c[Safety] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/ivan-taylor-154113\/\"><strong>Ivan Taylor<\/strong><\/a>, [wide receiver] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/derek-meadows-154899\/\"><strong>Derek Meadows<\/strong><\/a>, freaking [offensive tackle] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/jackson-lloyd-236139\/\"><strong>Jackson Lloyd<\/strong><\/a>, [offensive lineman] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/michael-carroll-157319\/\"><strong>Michael Carroll<\/strong><\/a>, [cornerback] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/dijon-lee-157947\/\"><strong>Dijon [Lee]<\/strong><\/a>, [wide receiver] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/lotzeir-brooks-151117\/\"><strong>Lotzeir [Brooks]<\/strong><\/a>, all our freshmen \u2014 we\u2019ve really been excited and surprised by our freshmen. All of our dudes are thriving, it\u2019s unreal. And they\u2019re fitting in well with the team.<\/p>\n<p id=\"PNUUlN\">\u201c[Quarterback] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/keelon-russell-176648\/\"><strong>Kee [Russell]<\/strong><\/a> is competing hard, he\u2019s a competitor. But as a whole nobody is a clear-cut No. 1 because all of them are alphas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"RCBdGd\">\u201cIvan he\u2019s a pro. He handles everything. He and [EDGE] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/justin-hill-163340\/\"><strong>Justin Hill<\/strong><\/a>, those dudes are pros. They finish, they work hard, they do extra, they\u2019re in the training room, they take care of their body. They come in from a professional mindset and a great background. This class is a home run.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"FzcEnQ\">All eyes will be on the Alabama QB battle, of course. That\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve seen Russell referred to as \u201cKee.\u201d Whoever that quote is from certainly seems to be passionate about Lloyd. Maybe he\u2019ll be ready to roll at right tackle. <\/p>\n<p id=\"mQJvvp\">Brad Crawford still thinks Ty Simpson will get the nod. <\/p>\n<aside id=\"J6cQh3\">\n<\/aside>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"nPMr9N\"><strong>Projected starter<\/strong>: Simpson<\/p>\n<p id=\"dy6X4f\"><strong>The word<\/strong>: Who will be Jalen Milroe\u2019s heir at <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/college\/alabama\/\"><strong>Alabama<\/strong><\/a>? Crimson Tide coach <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Coach\/kalen-deboer-3580\/\"><strong>Kalen DeBoer<\/strong><\/a> isn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/article\/kalen-deboer-breaks-down-the-qb-competition-whether-hed-be-comfortable-naming-a-starter-early-245939817\/\"><strong>willing to show his hand ahead of the start of spring practice<\/strong><\/a> in a few weeks. DeBoer told Bama247 recently that this competition will not \u201cwaste reps\u201d during the spring, but all three options will have equal opportunity to show what they\u2019ve got with a chance to impress the coaching staff. Russell, the heralded five-star true freshman, has already impressed as an early enrollee and has the tools to be an early-impact player in the SEC. The more likely option is Simpson, who is a seasoned vet after serving the last few seasons as Alabama\u2019s backup. Mack, a redshirt sophomore, transferred to Alabama from <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/college\/washington\/\"><strong>Washington<\/strong><\/a> with DeBoer\u2019s arrival and has a familiar face at offensive coordinator after <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Coach\/ryan-grubb-4015\/\"><strong>Ryan Grubb<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>re-joined DeBoer after a year in the NFL.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"9Cn0Cd\">Nicole Auerbach reports that the SEC and Big Ten are unsurprisingly getting pushback from the G5, Big 12, and ACC on changing the playoff seeding that allowed Boise State and Arizona State to \u201cearn\u201d byes. <\/p>\n<aside id=\"ufIZ8p\">\n<\/aside>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"dF7Z1f\">There\u2019s a $4 million payout that comes with advancing to a quarterfinal \u2014 that\u2019s on top of $4 million for reaching the playoff for a total of $8 million earned by a team\u2019s respective leagues.<\/p>\n<p id=\"wOLAVO\">Would those leagues vote in favor of changing the seeding without any financial or other assurances for their conference champions?<\/p>\n<p id=\"OIpM3q\">\u201cI don\u2019t see a willingness to do that,\u201d one CFP source said. \u201cI don\u2019t see the incentive for the G5 schools to agree to do away with the current seeding \u2014 just a self-interest thing \u2014 unless there\u2019s something else that\u2019s being committed to them for next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"qIxKBS\">The Group of 5 commissioners had their own separate call last week, and while there was an agreement that continued access to the CFP remains the top priority, there was concern about a lack of leverage for anything more.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"a5cPxk\">It\u2019s always about the money. <\/p>\n<p id=\"vmhrea\">Last, Bill Connelly has his annual returning production numbers for you. Most of the top teams from 2024 are on his \u201clikely to regress\u201d list due to roster turnover. Alabama is ranked 35th here, which is basically neutral. But, the numbers nationally are the lowest they\u2019ve been since he\u2019s been tracking them. <\/p>\n<aside id=\"ldBmCb\">\n<\/aside>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"EWWsvE\">We have another transfer window to come, so these averages aren\u2019t set in stone. But the national average shifted only from 58.7% last February to 59.9% in August; it\u2019s all but certain that we will end up with all-time lows in the returning production department this season.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6vpCal\">I think there are two primary causes for this. First, most of the players with remaining years of bonus eligibility due to 2020 have officially cycled out of the system. Granted, if you were a true freshman in 2020, received the bonus year, then redshirted in 2021, you\u2019ll still be a redshirt senior in 2025. But a healthy portion of the remaining bonus players are gone.<\/p>\n<p id=\"CMpaia\">Second, use of the transfer portal is only speeding up. In 2023, FBS teams averaged 10.7 incoming transfers. In 2024, that rose to 13.9, and we\u2019re already at 14.1 in 2025. Sure, a lot of the production from these transfers has just shifted from one school to another. But because of the way I calculate the numbers, a transfer is still a net negative.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"v9oScf\">Expect some ugly football this fall, folks. <\/p>\n<p id=\"WDm5LT\">That\u2019s about it for today.
