It\u2019s not only one of the most dangerous places on earth, it\u2019s also one of the most important. Unlike the other islands in the Andaman Chain including South Sentinel Island, this island is quite different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It is home to one of the last isolated tribes on earth, the Sentinelese. It\u2019s been nearly 1200 years\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/northsentinelisland.com\/north-sentinel-history\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">since<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Marco Polo explored the Andaman Islands and first described what we believe were the Sentinelese mistakenly as cannibals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">After the British claimed dominion over the India in 1757\u200a\u2014\u200aan East India Company shipped first noticed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/frontline.thehindu.com\/books\/a-history-of-reaching-out-to-the-sentinelese-tribe-of-the-andaman-nicobar-islands-book-excerpt-the-last-island-a-story-of-the-andamans-and-the-most-elusive-tribe-in-the-world-by-adam-goodheart\/article67402872.ece\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">fires<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on its beaches in 1771. The first colonial, Holmfray (a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@batoolhussain522\/chronicles-of-sentinel-island-delving-into-the-mysteries-of-a-forbidden-paradise-a57410e4374a\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">British<\/span><\/a>\u00a0surveyor) landed on the Island in 1867. That same year, the MV Ninevah ran aground on North Sentinel\u2019s reef. The 106 passengers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ohfact.com\/sentinel-island-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">and<\/span><\/a>\u00a0crew fended off attacks by the Sentinelese until a British ship rescued them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Maurice Vidal Portman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When Maurice Vidal Portman became British Government Administrator to the Andaman\u2019s\u200a\u2014\u200ahe may multiple trips to the Island starting in January 1880. In one such trip, taking\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mamamia.com.au\/sentinelese-tribe-maurice-portman\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">an<\/span><\/a>\u00a0elderly Sentinelese couple and their grandchildren back to Port Blair. After the elderly grandparents died of disease shortly after arriving at Port Blair, the children were returned to the island with gifts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In 1896, a convict who escaped from a nearby penal colony drifted his way onto the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/history.howstuffworks.com\/world-history\/north-sentinel-island.htm#:~:text=In%201896%2C%20a%20prisoner%20tried,arrows%22%20on%20North%20Sentinel%20Island.\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">shores<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of North Sentinel. His body was found days later full of arrows. And then there was the MV Primrose ran aground on the reefs of North Sentinel Island in 1981. After several harrowing days where the Sentinelese attempted to use boats to board the ship\u200a\u2014\u200athe shaken crew was rescued. In 2006\u200a\u2014\u200aa boat with two fisherman drifted onto the beaches of the island and were killed by the Sentinelese. Most recently in 2018, American Missionary John Allen Chau\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/feb\/03\/john-chau-christian-missionary-death-sentinelese\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">landed<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on the island was killed by the tribe. In 1975, they even fired arrows at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kionasmith\/2018\/11\/30\/everything-we-know-about-the-isolated-sentinelese-people-of-north-sentinel-island\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">King<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Leopold III of Belgium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Thankfully, recent history shows us that not all encounters ended in hostility. North Sentinel isn\u2019t just a forbidden, largely unexplored island. In the 1990s, multiple trips to the island from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/opinion\/madhumala-chattopadhyay-the-woman-who-made-the-sentinelese-put-their-arrows-down\/156330\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">local<\/span><\/a>\u00a0anthropologists even saw the tribe accepting coconuts as gifts. Sanctioned trips to the island ceased in 1997.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Although the isolated land of wonderment continues to be a magnet for encounters between one of the world\u2019s last uncontacted tribes and modern civilization, we cannot allow it to be for many reasons, and a few of those should serve as dire warnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Lack of immunity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Just like those two elderly Sentinelese\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/collection\/term\/BIOG127295\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">that<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Maurice Vidal Portman abducted, the Sentinelese have no immunity to modern diseases which are prevalent in our society today. Whether the tribe\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/regions\/north-sentinel-island#:~:text=The%20last%20survey%20of%20North,as%20many%20as%20400%20people.\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">population<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is 50 or 400, contact with us\u200a\u2014\u200awhich they clearly don\u2019t want\u200a\u2014\u200acould wipe them out completely. Contact from a single American missionary could be catastrophic to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/survivalinternational.org\/tribes\/sentinelese#:~:text=The%20Sentinelese%20have%20made%20it,which%20would%20decimate%20their%20population.\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">the<\/span><\/a>\u00a0entire tribe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Since the dawn of man, we\u2019ve made choices about our planet. Whether because of tribal belief, invaders who abduct their elders and children, or some history\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brill.com\/downloadpdf\/book\/edcoll\/9781848884298\/BP000012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">that<\/span><\/a>\u00a0we don\u2019t know like the Japanese occupation of the Andaman Islands, the Sentinelese want nothing to do with us. Successful trips to the island and periods of contact have frequently ended with Sentinelese standing on their haunches and brandishing weapons. We should honor their wishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Gateway to the past<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">North Sentinel Island isn\u2019t just a forbidden, unexplored Island. It\u2019s a gateway into\u00a0<em>our<\/em>\u00a0past. Around 60,000 years ago, it\u2019s believed that the Sentinelese walked from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2006\/feb\/12\/theobserver.worldnews12\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">the<\/span><\/a>\u00a0nearby continents and became trapped on the Island as sea levels rose. They are a window into our past, a rare look back at where we\u2019ve come from. One that should not be disturbed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">With a world population of approximately 8,091,734,930 and a population of less than 500 on North Sentinel\u200a\u2014\u200athe responsibility is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/world-population\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">ours<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to protect them. Not the other way around. The tribe preserves the lifestyle that they choose each and every day by being independently sustainable on that remote island. Even though they are technically\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kionasmith\/2018\/11\/30\/everything-we-know-about-the-isolated-sentinelese-people-of-north-sentinel-island\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">part<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of India\u200a\u2014\u200athey don\u2019t know it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It could be argued that we need to study their way of life and make every attempt to see North Sentinel Island. But with the dangers that it posses to the people of North Sentinel from both disease and from the unfortunate violence when outsiders are encounters, makes the status quo that has withstood for thousands of years most appropriate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In 2004, after a tsunami had crashed into the Andaman Islands, the Indian Navy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/Proba-1\/Tsunami_leaves_tribal_island_high_in_the_water\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">dispatched<\/span><\/a>\u00a0a helicopter to fly over North Sentinel to offer assistance.
