While I\u2019m waiting for the exclusive report from Classy Claude to be filed from this year\u2019s meeting of the American Historical Association, I thought I\u2019d draw your attention to a comment from The History Enthusiast, who said\u00a0that everyone in the pit on Thursday\u00a0was a real Debbie Downer:<\/p>\n

As a first-timer at the AHA Job Center I can report that it was much quieter than I expected (everyone was so tense!) and there were very few people milling around. That shouldn\u2019t really be a surprise.<\/p>\n

What struck me, though, is that when I smiled at people no one would smile back. I understand that the market is stressful (hello, I\u2019m on it too) but some of the people I saw looked like they were going to cry. And there haven\u2019t even been interviews yet! We were just dropping off CVs at the collection booth. I made small talk with one of the volunteers and he looked at me as if I had three heads. My guess is that none of the other applicants had spoken to him without having a look of sheer panic cross their face. Yes, I\u2019m nervous too. Yes, this is a big frickin\u2019 deal. But good God, it is not healthy to be so freaked out that you won\u2019t even look other people in the eye. I find that very disturbing.<\/p>\n

Those are all things I\u2019d expect on Saturday when the interviews are in full swing, but today? Seriously. I feel like I was the only sane person in the room.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That sounds about right for the pit most years, right friends?\u00a0 My bet is that The History Enthusiast will compare favorably to the Debbie Downers, especially since the departments hiring this year must be cheered by all of the top-notch candidates they\u2019ll be able to lure.\u00a0 For those of you tempted to be Debbie Downers:\u00a0 buck up,\u00a0<\/em>at least while you\u2019re\u00a0interviewing.\u00a0 Practice smiling in a warm, friendly, non-smug, non-condescending way\u00a0at your fellow job seekers.\u00a0 There\u2019s plenty of challenges in faculty life\u2013no one wants to hire a malcontent right out of the gate.\u00a0 (Well, no one most of us<\/em> want to work with.)\u00a0 Remember: you\u2019re never fully dressed without a smile!<\/p>\n
