The fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/post-fair\/\" id=\"auto-tag_post-fair\" data-tag=\"post-fair\">Post-Fair<\/a> is in Santa Monica, a (relatively) short car ride away from this week\u2019s main event, Frieze Los Angeles, is an added bonus to what is a delightful and easily digestible nugget of a fair.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBilled as a \u201cpilot edition of an alternative three-day art fair,\u201d this inaugural edition of Post-Fair sprung the mind of LA-based dealer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/chris-sharp\/\" id=\"auto-tag_chris-sharp\" data-tag=\"chris-sharp\">Chris Sharp<\/a>. Last year Sharp ran a similar micro-fair in Paris called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrissharpgallery.com\/placedesvosges\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Place des Vosges<\/a>. Named after its location, the event served as an amuse bouche for that French capital\u2019s iteration of Art Basel. The fair is housed in a historic Art Deco post office that was built in 1938. The number of galleries had increased significantly since Paris while remaining manageable, another benefit for those who can get overwhelmed at larger fairs. Of the 29 exhibitors and project spaces, there is a large number of local and international talent, with a mix of plucky newcomers and top-tier galleries including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/p-p-o-w\/\" id=\"auto-tag_p-p-o-w\" data-tag=\"p-p-o-w\">P.P.O.W.<\/a> and Spr\u00fcth Magers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI really wanted to create something that was more about the galleries, more collegial\u2014a place where galleries can take a risk and bring challenging work without risking the future of the gallery if nothing sells,\u201d Sharp told <em>ARTnews<\/em>. At larger, more commercial fairs, a few bad days can trigger existential dread and put a gallery\u2019s financials in question. \u201cThe whole idea was to have a place to avoid the fear that a bad fair could take your gallery out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe building itself is elegant: red marble on the walls, magnificent exposed beam roof, an intricate wood floor, with soft globe lighting hanging from the tall ceiling. The booths aren\u2019t booth at all but rather single gallery walls set up in the center of the room, with one gallery on either side, and dealers set up along the parameter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor his booth, Sharp brought a solo presentation of works by the late Iraqi German sculptor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/lin-may-saeed-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lin-may-saeed-2\" data-tag=\"lin-may-saeed-2\">Lin May Saeed<\/a>. In Europe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-in-america\/columns\/lin-may-saeed-appreciation-1234678459\/\">Saeed\u2019s reputation<\/a> has only grown since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/lin-may-saeed-sculptor-dead-1234678194\/\">her death in 2023<\/a>. But stateside, Sharp says, she\u2019s still relatively unknown. That\u2019s a shame since her sculptures and sculptural reliefs, which are made from discarded materials, like Styrofoam, show a depth of tenderness that betrays the stuff they are made from.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpr\u00fcth Magers, which has locations in Berlin, London, LA, and New York also brought the works of a beloved artist who died young, Kaari Upson; on view here is one of the late LA-based artist\u2019s last bodies of work. P.P.O.W\u2019s presentation of intricate drawings and hand-carved wooden artist frames by\u00a0Harry Gould Harvey IV is intricate and intriguing. The kind of work that, like a jigsaw puzzle, calls you to lean in and examine each small piece. The work, a cheeky take on America\u2019s obsession with pop culture and internet discourse, brought an immediate smile to my face. Nguyen\u2019s works are primarily gun-tufted textiles that depict nearly life sized punks and nerds covered to -nth degree in visual culture: books, coupon clippings, iPhones. \u201cI\u2019m an active doom scroller,\u201d Nguyen said. \u201cI consider it part of my practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tToward the back of the room is Good Weather\u2019s presentation of new works by\u00a0Detroit-based Dylan Spaysky. Comprised of repurposed mirrors and frames, one-way mirror film, night lights, brackets, and bolts, the works take inspiration from the multiplane camera technique pioneered by Walt Disney and used in the animated films until the 1990s. People of a certain age will melt at the references to\u00a0<em>Snow White<\/em>,\u00a0<em>101 Dalmatians<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Little Mermaid<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs with everything in Los Angeles timing a visit around the traffic takes finesse and forethought, but Post-Fair was a welcome addition to the week and an excellent reason to stay in Santa Monica for another couple of hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Among the more difficult things to navigate when visiting Los Angeles is the traffic.
