But as good as Preview is, it can\u2019t do everything you might<br \/>\nwant, and just like in the fairy tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears,<br \/>\n there are three popular apps for working with PDF: Preview is the<br \/>\nfirst, and while it\u2019s decent and free, Smile\u2019s PDFpen and PDFpenPro<br \/>\noffer quite a few more features but cost $75 or $125. The high-end spot<br \/>\nis occupied by Adobe\u2019s Acrobat Pro DC, which is priced at a hefty $450.<br \/>\nWhich PDF app is right for you?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"clear: left; float: left; font-weight: 400; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"PDF-Preview-icon\" class=\" wp-image-581 alignright\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/tcn.tidbits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/PDF-Preview-icon.png\" width=\"200\"\/><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You won\u2019t go wrong starting with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT201740\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<br \/>\n which enables you to rearrange pages in a PDF, copy pages from one PDF<br \/>\ninto another, delete pages, and even import new pages from a scanner.<br \/>\nPreview lets you navigate PDFs via the table of contents or thumbnails,<br \/>\nand can display the pages in a grid. If you\u2019re trading a PDF back and<br \/>\nforth with a collaborator, you can use Preview to highlight text and add<br \/>\n annotations. Preview even makes it possible to fill out interactive<br \/>\nforms and sign documents with a stored photo of your signature. It has a<br \/>\n search capability, although it\u2019s a little weak, and you can bring up an<br \/>\n inspector window that displays metadata about the PDF, although you<br \/>\ncan\u2019t change anything in there apart from keywords.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"clear: left; float: left; font-weight: 400; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"PDF-PDFpenPro-icon\" class=\" wp-image-582 alignright\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/tcn.tidbits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/PDF-PDFpenPro-icon.png\" width=\"200\"\/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/smilesoftware.com\/pdfpen\">PDFpen<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/smilesoftware.com\/pdfpenpro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PDFpenPro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n can do everything Preview can, and quite a bit more. When scanning a<br \/>\npage, they can perform optical character recognition (OCR), which adds<br \/>\nsearchable and editable text to the scanned image of the document.<br \/>\nSpeaking of text, both apps can add to and change the text of a PDF,<br \/>\nwhich is handy when you want to make a quick correction or update an old<br \/>\n document. They also let you move, resize, and delete images in PDFs,<br \/>\nredact sensitive information, find and replace text, add file and audio<br \/>\nattachments, and export to Microsoft Word format. PDFpenPro goes even<br \/>\nfurther, making it possible to turn a Web site into a PDF, export to<br \/>\nMicrosoft Excel and PowerPoint formats, create and edit a PDF\u2019s table of<br \/>\n contents, create links from URLs in a document, and more.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"clear: left; float: left; font-weight: 400; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"PDF-Acrobat-icon\" class=\" wp-image-583 alignright\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/tcn.tidbits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/PDF-Acrobat-icon.png\" width=\"200\"\/><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What more do you get with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acrobat Pro DC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n for more than three times the price of PDFpenPro? (It\u2019s also included<br \/>\nwith an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription.) Since it comes from Adobe,<br \/>\nthe company that created PDF, Acrobat will work with complex and<br \/>\ninvolved PDFs that might stymie the other apps. Acrobat offers high-end<br \/>\nprint production features, integration with Microsoft Office, and a<br \/>\nside-by-side view for fixing suspected text recognition errors in an<br \/>\nOCRed scan. Most important, if you need to edit PDFs frequently,<br \/>\nAcrobat\u00a0can reflow text across an entire page, add new lines to existing<br \/>\n bulleted or numbered lists without reformatting, and clean up document<br \/>\nphotos to remove the background and adjust perspective.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My recommendation? Start with<br \/>\nPreview and see whether you need more features. If PDFpen or PDFpenPro<br \/>\nwill resolve your problems, they\u2019re solid performers that don\u2019t cost too<br \/>\n much.
