But the releases on that label usually sell out quickly, so a physical release was unavailable \u2013 until <em>Home Normal<\/em> recently re-released it. I won\u2019t write the same words about this release again, just click the link in the title to read my 2018 recommendation. So, if you\u2019re unfamiliar with <em>Landscape Of Lovers<\/em> you can now make up for that. <br \/>I mention this re-release because <em>Home Normal <\/em>not only re-releases this album but celebrates the re-release with two extra (digital) releases featuring <strong><em>James Murray<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2018s<\/em> music. <br \/>And they are spoiling us even more by offering these two as <em>Name-Your-Price <\/em>downloads!<\/p>\n<p>The first is a brand new track called <strong><em>Safehaven<\/em><\/strong>. Written and recorded over Christmas 2024 at Home Normal Headquarters <em>\u2018inspired by the quietude of the surrounding environment and a new studio set-up to work from\u2019. <\/em><br \/>It is presented as a \u2018long-form track\u2019, but with 10 minutes and 40 seconds, I would not call it that myself \u2013 although it\u2019s probably too long for most radio stations. <br \/>(When do we speak about \u2018long-form\u2019 music? One hour? Three hours? 24 hours? 25 minutes? 11 minutes).<br \/>But that is hardly relevant: the track is as beautiful as can be expected from <strong><em>Murray<\/em><\/strong><em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"lazy lazy-hidden\" style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" data-lazy-type=\"iframe\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1696423276\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/homenormal.bandcamp.com\/album\/safehaven\">Safehaven by James Murray<\/a><\/iframe><noscript><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1696423276\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/homenormal.bandcamp.com\/album\/safehaven\">Safehaven by James Murray<\/a><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The other pleasant surprise is a remix of tracks from each solo and collaborative release by <strong><em>James Murray<\/em><\/strong> on the <em>Home Normal <\/em>label. <br \/>Thirteen tracks, all from different releases (including one yet to be released in April) were carefully mixed by label owner Ian Hawgood into a seamless 80-minute mix. (Track details on the Bandcamp page). <br \/>Not only a perfect introduction to <em>\u2018the sheer breadth and creativity of this truly great artist\u2019<\/em> and a wonderful addition to those already familiar with his work. <\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget: this is a pay-what-you-can release with all donations going to the artist.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"lazy lazy-hidden\" style=\"border: 0; The title may suggest some \u2018savage\u2019 music, but the music is surprisingly soft-natured.<\/p>\n<p>Using his guitar, mellotron and some classic amps, <strong><em>Hawgood <\/em><\/strong> wanted to <em>\u2018capture the sound of his amps and tapes within the dynamics of his small studio room to absorb the reverberations as they hit him when he makes music\u2019<\/em>. Recorded entirely at night and mixed in the early hours<strong><em> Hawgood<\/em><\/strong> <em>\u2018poured a lot of late night exhaustion and frustration into the music here but ended up creating something deeply cathartic and melodic, whilst grabbing the wonderful dirt, fuzziness and hum of these old pieces of kit through the recording techniques used.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is a deeply personal album that originally was not intended to be released. In the liner notes, <strong><em>Hawgood<\/em><\/strong> describes a difficult time in his life, physically as well as mental, which took many months of rehabilitation and coundselling to recover. Re-visiting and re-working these recordings were a major help in his recovery. <br \/>It was a part of the therapy for <em>\u2018the deep frustration with the expectation of music\u2019<\/em> and the <em>\u2018feelings towards the music industry or scene(s) in the current climate and how damaging the modern affliction of these attitudes and narcissicm truly is\u2019<\/em>. <br \/>Being a creative musican and a passionate label manager can clearly take its toll: <em>\u201cI let it get to me over a sustained period of running a label and over-giving my personal self to others to be blunt\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So there\u2019s the relation with the title\u2019s \u2018Savage\u2019, perhaps.
