Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Germany\u2019s Friedrich Merz promised to \u201cachieve independence\u201d from the US after his centre-right bloc won federal elections, putting him at the head of a potentially complex coalition at a time of upheaval for Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an election where Germany shifted to the right, Merz\u2019s Christian Democrats (CDU\/CSU) came first with about 29 per cent of the vote on Sunday, according to projections, but still needed at least one other coalition partner to secure a working parliamentary majority. <\/p>\n<p>Merz, within hours of polls closing, declared that Germany had to fundamentally remake its security arrangements and end a decades-long reliance on Washington, given US President Donald Trump was \u201clargely indifferent\u201d to Europe\u2019s fate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not have any illusions in this regard,\u201d Merz said, adding he was unsure about the future of Nato over the coming months. <\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) came second in the election, with its highest ever vote share of about 20 per cent.<\/p>\n<div class=\"n-content-layout\" data-component=\"flourish\" data-component-id=\"21771864\" data-component-type=\"flourish-in-article\">\n<figure class=\"n-content-picture n-content-layout__container\"><a href=\"#21771864\"><picture data-asset-type=\"flourish\" data-flourish-id=\"21771864\" data-flourish-type=\"visualisation\">\n<div id=\"21771864\" class=\"cp-message o-message o-message--inform o-message--notice\" data-o-component=\"o-message\">\n<div class=\"o-message__container\">\n<div class=\"o-message__content\">\n<p class=\"o-message__content-main\">Some content could not load. Check your internet connection or browser settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fpublic.flourish.studio%2Fvisualisation%2F21771864%2Fthumbnail%3FcacheBuster%3D966859?source=cp-content-pipeline&fit=scale-down&quality=highest&width=980&dpr=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/picture><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Trump administration has openly courted the AfD and has criticised Germany\u2019s mainstream politicians for refusing to cooperate with a party that has flirted with Nazi-era slogans, urged the end of sanctions on Russia and called for mass deportations of migrants. <\/p>\n<p>Trump in recent weeks has blindsided Europe by holding direct talks with Russia over ending the war in Ukraine and has threatened to pull US security guarantees from the continent. Germany hosts the largest contingent of American troops stationed in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Trump earlier on Sunday described the election result as proof that \u201cthe people of Germany got tired of the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration, that has prevailed for so many years\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Outgoing German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck said his country was facing a \u201chistorical challenge\u201d that required urgent action. \u201cThe US don\u2019t just leave Europe behind, they are working against Europe,\u201d the senior Green politician said.<\/p>\n<p>Merz has little option but to form a coalition with outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz\u2019s Social Democratic party, which won a little over 16 per cent of the votes \u2014 its worst result since 1887.<\/p>\n<p>But on Sunday night, it remained unclear whether Merz could negotiate a ruling majority strong enough to drive through fundamental reforms, including revisions to a constitutionally enshrined limit on public borrowing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the scale of the challenge that lies ahead of us,\u201d Merz said.\u2009\u201cI approach this with the greatest respect. And I know that it will not be easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a hard campaign but now we will talk to each other,\u201d Merz said, adding it might be even more difficult to form a coalition than he had expected during the election campaign. <\/p>\n<p>His political calculations were complicated by the fact that Merz\u2019s traditional partner, the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), was on course to fall short of the 5 per cent threshold to enter the Bundestag. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the far-left Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) stood on the cusp of securing seats in parliament \u2014 making it impossible for Merz to build a working majority with just the SPD. The Greens would be the most likely third party in a coalition. <\/p>\n<p>Voter turnout reached its highest since German reunification in 1990, according to exit poll data, at a level of 84 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary results mark a big swing to the right after a series of deadly attacks by migrants fuelled anti-immigrant sentiment. <\/p>\n<p>German voters shunned Scholz\u2019s unpopular coalition with the Greens and the FDP. <\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Germany\u2019s Friedrich Merz promised to \u201cachieve independence\u201d from the US after his centre-right bloc won federal elections, putting him at the head of a potentially complex coalition at a time of upheaval for Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an election where Germany shifted to the right, Merz\u2019s Christian Democrats (CDU\/CSU) came first with about 29 per cent of the vote on Sunday, according to projections, but still needed at least one other coalition partner to secure a working parliamentary majority. <\/p>\n<p>Merz, within hours of polls closing, declared that Germany had to fundamentally remake its security arrangements and end a decades-long reliance on Washington, given US President Donald Trump was \u201clargely indifferent\u201d to Europe\u2019s fate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not have any illusions in this regard,\u201d Merz said, adding he was unsure about the future of Nato over the coming months. <\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) came second in the election, with its highest ever vote share of about 20 per cent.<\/p>\n<div class=\"n-content-layout\" data-component=\"flourish\" data-component-id=\"21771864\" data-component-type=\"flourish-in-article\">\n<figure class=\"n-content-picture n-content-layout__container\"><a href=\"#21771864\"><picture data-asset-type=\"flourish\" data-flourish-id=\"21771864\" data-flourish-type=\"visualisation\">\n<div id=\"21771864\" class=\"cp-message o-message o-message--inform o-message--notice\" data-o-component=\"o-message\">\n<div class=\"o-message__container\">\n<div class=\"o-message__content\">\n<p class=\"o-message__content-main\">Some content could not load. Germany hosts the largest contingent of American troops stationed in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Trump earlier on Sunday described the election result as proof that \u201cthe people of Germany got tired of the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration, that has prevailed for so many years\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Outgoing German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck said his country was facing a \u201chistorical challenge\u201d that required urgent action. \u201cThe US don\u2019t just leave Europe behind, they are working against Europe,\u201d the senior Green politician said.<\/p>\n<p>Merz has little option but to form a coalition with outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz\u2019s Social Democratic party, which won a little over 16 per cent of the votes \u2014 its worst result since 1887.<\/p>\n<p>But on Sunday night, it remained unclear whether Merz could negotiate a ruling majority strong enough to drive through fundamental reforms, including revisions to a constitutionally enshrined limit on public borrowing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the scale of the challenge that lies ahead of us,\u201d Merz said.\u2009\u201cI approach this with the greatest respect. And I know that it will not be easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a hard campaign but now we will talk to each other,\u201d Merz said, adding it might be even more difficult to form a coalition than he had expected during the election campaign. <\/p>\n<p>His political calculations were complicated by the fact that Merz\u2019s traditional partner, the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), was on course to fall short of the 5 per cent threshold to enter the Bundestag. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the far-left Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) stood on the cusp of securing seats in parliament \u2014 making it impossible for Merz to build a working majority with just the SPD. The Greens would be the most likely third party in a coalition. <\/p>\n<p>Voter turnout reached its highest since German reunification in 1990, according to exit poll data, at a level of 84 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary results mark a big swing to the right after a series of deadly attacks by migrants fuelled anti-immigrant sentiment. <\/p>\n<p>German voters shunned Scholz\u2019s unpopular coalition with the Greens and the FDP.
