I\u2019ve also gone on and on and on (and on) about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/customtask-the-guide\/\"><code>customTask<\/code><\/a>, which makes adding metadata to the Google Analytics hits dispatched from your website a breeze.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll introduce a simple way to add yet another level of detail to your GA hits, using <code>customTask<\/code> as the method of choice. The piece of data we\u2019ll add is the <strong>hit type<\/strong> of the hit (e.g. <em>pageview<\/em>, <em>event<\/em>, and <em>timing<\/em>) which, for some ludicrous reason, is not a default dimension available in Google Analytics reports.<\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"simmer\"><br \/>\n  <span class=\"close\">X<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    <span class=\"fa fa-md fa-bell\"\/><br \/>\n    <strong>The Simmer Newsletter<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Subscribe to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/newsletter\/\">Simmer newsletter<\/a> to get the latest news and content from Simo Ahava into your email inbox!\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-80-add-hit-type-as-a-custom-dimension\">Tip 80: Add hit type as a Custom Dimension<\/h2>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 960 \/ 540;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/05\/add-hit-type-custom-dimension.jpg\" title=\"Add hit type as a Custom Dimension\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"540\" width=\"960\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/05\/add-hit-type-custom-dimension.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Add hit type as a Custom Dimension\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Adding <strong>hit type<\/strong> as a Custom Dimension is fairly easy, because it\u2019s a default <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/analyticsjs\/field-reference#hitType\">field<\/a> available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/analyticsjs\/model-object-reference\">model object<\/a> that <code>customTask<\/code> automatically receives as a parameter when executed.<\/p>\n<p>So, to start with, create a new Hit-scoped Custom Dimension in your Google Analytics Property Settings. Name it <strong>Hit type<\/strong>. Make note of the <strong>Index number<\/strong> assigned to the new dimension.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1994 \/ 1068;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/05\/new-custom-dimension.jpg\" title=\"New Custom Dimension\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1068\" width=\"1994\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/05\/new-custom-dimension.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"New Custom Dimension\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Then, in <strong>Google Tag Manager<\/strong>, create a new <strong>Custom JavaScript variable<\/strong> (or edit your existing <code>customTask<\/code> variable). Add the following code within:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> hitTypeIndex = <span style=\"color:#099\">2<\/span>;\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">return<\/span> <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(model) {\n    model.set(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'dimension'<\/span> + hitTypeIndex, model.get(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'hitType'<\/span>));\n  };\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Change the <code>hitTypeIndex<\/code> variable value from <code>2<\/code> in the example to whatever the index number of your Custom Dimension is.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, add this variable to <strong>all<\/strong> your Google Analytics tags in <strong>More Settings<\/strong> \/ <strong>Fields To Set<\/strong>. It\u2019s easiest if you just add it to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/google-analytics-settings-variable-in-gtm\/\">Google Analytics Settings variable<\/a> (you are using one, right?). The field name should be <code>customTask<\/code>, and the value should be the Custom JavaScript variable you just created.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1800 \/ 950;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/05\/customtask-settings-variable.jpg\" title=\"Google Analytics Settings variable \/ customTask\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"950\" width=\"1800\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/05\/customtask-settings-variable.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Google Analytics Settings variable \/ customTask\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, every tag that has this field set will send its hit type automatically to Google Analytics as part of the hit payload.<\/p>\n<p>You can verify this setup works by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/google-analytics-debugger\/jnkmfdileelhofjcijamephohjechhna?hl=en\">Google Analytics Debugger<\/a> browser extension, and checking that the hit type is being sent with the correct Custom Dimension parameter (<code>&amp;cdX<\/code>, where X is the index number).<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1068 \/ 538;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/05\/ga-debugger.jpg\" title=\"GA Debugger output\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"538\" width=\"1068\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/05\/ga-debugger.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"GA Debugger output\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you can see that parameter, you\u2019ll know everything should be working as intended.<\/p>\n<p>And <strong>what can you do with this data<\/strong>, you ask? Well, the most useful (my opinion) application is with segments. You can create <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/3124493?hl=en#conditions\">Advanced Segments<\/a> such as the one in the title image of this article to find specific sequences of different hit types, such as sessions where an event preceded a pageview hit.<\/p>\n<p>Or you can pull the data out using the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/reporting\/core\/v4\/\">Reporting API<\/a>, and use the new <strong>Hit type<\/strong> Custom Dimension as an additional level of detail. This is particularly useful when combined with dimensions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/improve-data-collection-with-four-custom-dimensions\/#4-hit-timestamp\">hit timestamp<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/improve-data-collection-with-four-custom-dimensions\/#3-session-id\">session ID<\/a>, and the variety of browsing behavior dimensions introduced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/track-browsing-behavior-in-google-analytics\/\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let me know in the comments if you can think of other uses for this data!
