Clouds have been a little slower to overspread the northern half of Alabama than I thought today, so some bonus sunshine is appreciated. A few halos have been showing up in social media feeds, especially over eastern Alabama.

When the sun is in his house,

It will rain soon

That’s a weather folklore saying about halos, and it is very true. When high level cirrostratus causes the sun or moon”s light to refract, forming the halo, it generally is a sign that a storm system is on the way.

Now for folks in Anniston, this one could miss, as the rain will mostly stay to the south. Latest convection allowing model data confirms this idea. We will just have to see.

Temperatures were quite chilly overnight, with Tennessee Valley locations mostly in the lower 20s. Middle and upper 20s were plentiful across Central Alabama. South of that, clouds kept readings a little warmer.

Readings today will be in the 50s areawide today.

Rain should stay south of I-22/US-280 today and tonight, and mostly be out of the area by midnight. Rainfall will be heavier and more widespread to the south. It has already been a wet morning along the Gulf Coast from Mobile to Destin.

Monday will feature increasing sunshine with mild high sin the upper 50s to middle 60s. Tuesday wil be even warmer with more sunshine and a few folks touching 70 degrees! Then Wednesday looks fabulous, with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s with a few middle 70s across South Alabama. The next chance for rain will come Thursday, but it doesn’t look heavy and no severe weather will be associated with the system.

Watching March 5th as our next significant severe weather chance. Still a long way off and plenty of time to bring the forecast into focus, but something to keep in mind.
