Rather, it\u2019s part of a much greater geopolitical shift with massive consequences \u2014 not just for the US but for many other countries around the world.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practical tips for building a robust asymmetric portfolio.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>And mucho mas!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can listen to the entire podcast\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1mwmDLbS-DA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on Youtube here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udcb8 CHECKING IN ON VENTURE CAPITAL<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Some thoughts on a topic we don\u2019t often discuss in these writings \u2014 venture capital and early stage\/startup investing.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a long-time reader of our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/capexinsider.com\/insider-newsletter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Insider Newsletter<\/em><\/a>, you\u2019ll be familiar with our stance on venture capital.<\/p>\n<p>We often talked about how the entire VC industry is merely a derivative of the \u201cgrowth\u201d bubble, which itself has been caused by central bankers pressuring bond yields lower and lower (the zero or even negative rate phenomenon), forcing more and more capital further and further down the risk curve.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no coincidence that \u2014 with rates in an uptrend \u2014 VC as an asset class is not as hot as it was a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>We were reminded of an old\u00a0<em>Insider Newsletter<\/em>\u00a0issue from back in 2023, where Chris wrote on this very topic and said\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The coming implosion (give it 12 months or less) as the venture capitalists books are going to begin to be forced to mark-to-market their positions is going to be epic. I say they\u2019re going to be forced to do this because most VC funded firms have 12 months of runway, and pray tell, who\u2019s going to keep lending money to mostly (not all mind) cash incinerating Silicon Valley startups? So start your stopwatches and let\u2019s clock back in 12 months from now or so (probably less).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>More than 12 months has passed since then, but the reason we bring this up today is because we came across an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/carrynointerest\/status\/1889363389823975656\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insightful\u00a0<s>Twitter<\/s>\u00a0X thread<\/a>\u00a0on the state of venture capital and thought you might find it insightful.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"384\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35989\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-5.jpeg 384w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-5-230x300.jpeg 230w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-5-96x125.jpeg 96w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udf40 POSITION YOURSELF TO GET LUCKY<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You might remember how a few weeks ago, we discussed China and made a case for owning Chinese tech stocks.<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, we noted there\u2019s something that most investors don\u2019t appreciate enough. The fact that China has an edge when it comes to AI \u2014 purely on the basis that yuuuge amounts of energy are required to power AI applications\u2026 and China\u2019s electricity costs are a fraction of those in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how we wrapped it up:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>We don\u2019t think it would take a lot for Chinese tech stocks to go much higher than where they are today. Certainly, stranger things have happened in the markets.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Then, just days later, DeepSeek turned the tech world upside down\u2026<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"434\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-4.jpeg 434w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-4-260x300.jpeg 260w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-4-109x125.jpeg 109w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In short, over in China, a group of geeks came up with an AI that beats the pants off ChatGPT (and most other competitors)\u2026 for a fraction of the cost.<\/p>\n<p>Did we know all this was coming? No. After all, we\u2019re just a small team of hedgies sitting in their underpants.<\/p>\n<p>But we did see that, purely from a valuation perspective, Chinese tech stocks were dirt cheap (sporting earnings multiples that would be more appropriate for stodgy, low growth industries) while delivering record earnings.<\/p>\n<p>Then, suddenly, more and more folks started waking up to this reality, too. Here\u2019s Deutsche Bank getting all giddy about Chinese tech stocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"769\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-2-769x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-2-769x1024.png 769w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-2-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-2-94x125.png 94w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-2-768x1023.png 768w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-2-600x799.png 600w, https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-2.png 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pull out a magnifying glass and check out that last paragraph:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2026global investors tend to be heavily underweight China, just as they were avoiding fossil fuels several years ago \u2014 until the market punished those taking non-market based decisions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds like something we would probably write. But let\u2019s not get sidetracked here.
