Do not vote for a third party, no matter how angry you are. Because that will elect somebody who will deny you any voice in the future of the United States\u2026. If you really care about Gaza, vote to have a voice, so you can do something about it. And then, be ready to turn out into the streets, in the millions, and fight for it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fonda\u2019s remarks came in a wide-ranging interview organized by the global media collaborative <a href=\"https:\/\/coveringclimatenow.org\/\">Covering Climate Now<\/a> and conducted by <em>The Guardian<\/em>, CBS News, and <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Making major social change requires massive, nonviolent street protests as well as shrewd electoral organizing, Fonda argued. Drawing on more than 50 years of activism, from her anti\u2013Vietnam War and anti-nuclear protests in the 1970s to later agitating for economic democracy, women\u2019s rights, and, today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/oct\/23\/jane-fonda-on-the-climate-fight-cure-for-despair-action\">for climate action<\/a>, Fonda said that \u201cHistory shows us that\u2026you need millions of people in the streets, but you [also] need people in the halls of power with ears and a heart to hear the protests, to hear the demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"current-issue-block_3b8cd9f80e46e1ea24069ed1c73fe2dd\" class=\"current-issue  float-l-w-2\">\n<h4 class=\"current-issue__title\">\n                    Current Issue<br \/>\n            <\/h4>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/issue\/march-2025-issue\/\" class=\"current-issue__cover\"><br \/>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/cover0325.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of March 2025 Issue\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>During the Great Depression, she said, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt agreed with helping the masses of unemployed. But FDR said the public had to \u201cmake him do it,\u201d or he could not overcome resistance from the status quo. \u201cThere is a chance for us to make them do it if it\u2019s Kamala Harris and Tim Walz [in the White House],\u201d she said. \u201cThere is no chance if Trump and Vance win this election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have repeatedly warned that greenhouse gas emissions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/mar\/20\/ipcc-climate-crisis-report-delivers-final-warning-on-15c\">must be cut by half by the next decade<\/a>, Fonda noted, so a President Harris would have to be pushed \u201cto stop drilling, and fracking, and mining. No new development of fossil fuels.\u201d Trump, on the other hand, has promised to \u201c\u2018drill, baby, drill.\u2019 For once, let\u2019s believe him. The choice is very clear: Do we vote for the future, or do we vote for burning up the planet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fonda launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/janepac.com\/\">Jane Fonda Climate political action committee<\/a> three years ago to elect \u201cclimate champions\u201d at all levels of government\u2014national, state, and local. \u201cThe PAC focuses downballot\u2014on mayors, state legislators, county councils,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s incredible how much effect people in these positions can have on climate issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<section aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"ad fullwidth-ad contained row position-relative ad-block alignfull \">\n            <!--Ad policy starts here--><br \/>\n                    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/advertising-policy\" class=\"mid-ad-policy\">Ad Policy<\/a><br \/>\n                <!--Ad policy ends here--><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>Forty-two of the 60 candidates the PAC endorsed in 2022 won their races. In 2024, the PAC is providing money, voter outreach, and publicity to more than 100 candidates in key battleground states and in Fonda\u2019s home state of California. California is \u201cthe fifth-biggest economy in the world, and an oil-producing state,\u201d she explained, \u201cso what happens here has an impact far broader than California.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fonda is also, for the first time in her life, \u201cvery involved\u201d in a presidential campaign this year, \u201cbecause of the climate emergency.\u201d She will visit each battleground state. \u201cAnd when I\u2019m there, we give our schedule to the Harris campaign. Then they fold in Harris campaign [get-out-the-vote], volunteer recruitment, things like that, that I do for the Harris campaign and then I do them for our PAC candidates\u201d as well.<\/p>\n<section id=\"popular-block_75dcda337bc62118630890ee7c4a67e5\" class=\"popular-articles\">\n<div class=\"swiper\">\n<p><h2>Popular<\/h2>\n<p>            <span class=\"swipe-msg\"><span class=\"sr-only\">\u201cswipe left below to view more authors\u201d<\/span>Swipe \u2192<\/span>\n        <\/p>\n<ol class=\"popular-articles__list\">\n<li class=\"popular-articles__list-item swiper-slide\">\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"popular-articles__list-item swiper-slide\">\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"popular-articles__list-item swiper-slide\">\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"popular-articles__list-item swiper-slide\">\n<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Her PAC has a strict rule: It endorses only candidates who do not accept money from the fossil fuel industry. The industry\u2019s \u201cstranglehold over our government\u201d explains a crucial disconnect, Fonda said:  Polls show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/08\/09\/what-the-data-says-about-americans-views-of-climate-change\/\">most Americans want climate action<\/a>, yet their elected officials often don\u2019t deliver it. In California, she said, \u201cwe\u2019ve had so many moderate Democrats that blocked the climate solutions we need because they take money from the fossil fuel industry\u2026. It\u2019s very hard to stand up to the people that are supporting your candidacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fonda also faulted the mainstream news media for not doing a better job of informing the public about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\">climate emergency<\/a> and the abundance of solutions. Watching the Harris-Trump debate, she thought that \u201cKamala did very well.\u201d But she \u201cwas very disturbed that the number-one crisis facing humanity right now took an hour and a half to come up and was not really addressed. People don\u2019t understand what we are facing! The news media has to be more vigilant about tying extreme weather events to climate change. It\u2019s starting to happen, but not enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given her years of anti-nuclear activism\u2014including producing and starring in a hit Hollywood movie, <em>The China Syndrome<\/em>, released days before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/reading-rm\/doc-collections\/fact-sheets\/3mile-isle.html\">Three Mile Island reactor accident<\/a> in 1979\u2014it\u2019s perhaps no surprise that Fonda rejects the increasingly fashionable idea that nuclear power is a climate solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time I speak [in public], someone asks me if these <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucsusa.org\/edwin-lyman\/five-things-the-nuclear-bros-dont-want-you-to-know-about-small-modular-reactors\/\">small modular reactors <\/a>are a solution,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I\u2019ve spent time researching it, and there\u2019s one unavoidable problem. No nuclear reactor of any kind\u2014the traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/06\/14\/nx-s1-5002007\/bill-gates-nuclear-power-artificial-intelligence\">or the smaller or the modular<\/a>, none of them\u2014has been built in less than 10 to 20 years. We don\u2019t have that kind of time. We have to deal with the climate crisis by the 2030s. So just on the timeline, nuclear is not a solution.\u201d By contrast, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/solarpower\">solar<\/a> takes about four years to develop, and pretty soon it\u2019s going to be 30 percent of the electricity in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"cta-block_172e3bd6a3a25eea92a8f7f254c965db\" class=\"cta float-l-w-3\">\n<p>The reason that solar\u2014and wind and geothermal\u2014are not prioritized over fossil fuels and nuclear, she argued, is that \u201cbig companies don\u2019t make as much money on it.\u201d Noting that air pollution from  fossil fuels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/global-pollution-kills-9-million-people-each-year\/\">kills 9 million people a year globally<\/a>, she added, \u201cWe\u2019re being poisoned to death because of petrochemicals and the fossil fuel industry. And we [taxpayers] pay for it! We pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/reforming-global-fossil-fuel-subsidies-how-the-united-states-can-restart-international-cooperation\/\">$20 billion a year<\/a> [in government subsidies] to the fossil fuel industry, and we\u2019re dying\u2026. We need that industry out of our lives, off of our planet, but they run the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two-time Academy Award winner\u2019s decades as one of the world\u2019s biggest movie stars has given her an appreciation of the power of celebrity, and she applauds Taylor Swift for exercising that power with her endorsement of the Harris-Walz ticket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she\u2019s awesome, amazing, and very smart,\u201d Fonda said of Swift. \u201cI\u2019m very grateful and excited that she did it, and\u2026I think it\u2019s going to have a big impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy metaphor for myself, and other celebrities, is a repeater,\u201d Fonda added. \u201cWhen you look at a big, tall mountain, and you see these antennas on the top, those are repeaters. They pick up the signals from the valley that are weak and distribute them so that they have a larger audience\u2026. When I\u2019m doing the work I\u2019m doing, I\u2019m picking up the signals from the people who live in Wilmington and the Central Valley and Kern County and are really suffering, and the animals that can\u2019t speak, and trying to lift them up and send them out to a broader audience. We\u2019re repeaters. It\u2019s a very valid thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Climate activism is also \u201cso much fun,\u201d she said, and it does wonders for her mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t get depressed anymore. You know, Greta Thunberg said something really great: \u2018Everybody goes looking for hope. Hope is where there\u2019s action, so look for action and hope will come.\u2019\u201d Hope, Fonda added, is \u201cvery different than optimism. Optimism is: \u2018Everything\u2019s gonna be fine,\u2019 but you don\u2019t do anything to make sure that that\u2019s true.
