It\u2019s time for a big feature update to my GTM Tools<\/a>, a free tool for managing your Google Tag Manager<\/a> containers, tags, triggers, variables, and now: workspaces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/h2>\n

First of all, you can access Workspace mode<\/strong> through the container selection screen, or via the container page:<\/p>\n

Workspace mode<\/strong> is a pretty big departure from what GTM Tools has been capable of until now. For long, I had been trying to figure out how to elegantly allow mass-updating individual items within GTM, but finally I found the time to make things work, utilizing workspaces<\/a> to keep things in check.<\/p>\n

In Workspace mode, the first release includes the following features:<\/p>\n

As you can see, the feature list is limited. But I\u2019ve built the mode in such a way that adding new features will be easy in the future. I\u2019m looking forward to adding things like removing unused variables and adding triggers to tags.<\/p>\n

Current caveats<\/h2>\n

Here are some things you should know about Workspace mode.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \n

    It does not display changes made or conflicts existing in the workspace itself<\/strong>. This is something I hope to add soon.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Changes are made only in the current workspace you are editing<\/strong>. Perhaps at some point I will add the option of copying items \/ changes to another workspace, too.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    If you edit the raw JSON of an item, then any other changes you make will override the changes in the JSON<\/strong>. In other words, if you, for example, pause an item using the Workspace mode \u201cPause \/ Unpause\u201d action, and then you also set the flag paused<\/code> to false<\/code> in the JSON, the pausing action will override the change you made directly in the JSON.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Those are the main caveats at the moment.<\/p>\n

    As always, editing items is at your own risk. Remember that any changes you make to the workspace can potentially disrupt the work others have been putting into it.<\/p>\n

    Thankfully, workspaces is a pretty solid feature itself, so if you make silly changes, it\u2019s easy to roll back by either abandoning individual changes or just deleting the whole workspace and starting from scratch.<\/p>\n

    Features<\/h2>\n

    Here are the features in Workspace mode. Any assets that you change in Workspace mode will be highlighted with a red line in the beginning of each changed row:<\/p>\n

    The Changes<\/strong> column will also display an icon reflecting each change. Finally, the respective Actions menu selection will be bolded<\/strong> if a change has been made there, and if you change the name of an item, the name field will be bolded, too.<\/p>\n

    Update a single item<\/h3>\n

    Any feature can be applied to a single item by clicking the Action menu at the end of the item row:<\/p>\n

    Mass-update multiple selected items<\/h3>\n

    You can also apply any change (except Edit JSON<\/strong> and renaming the item, which must always be done row-by-row individually) by first selecting the items you want to mass-update, and then hovering over the category header to choose the action:<\/p>\n

    Naturally, each selection in the category header only applies to selected items within that category.<\/p>\n

    1. Pause \/ Unpause (tags only)<\/h3>\n

    Paused<\/strong> tags are indicated with a grey background. You can change the pause status of a tag by choosing Pause<\/strong> \/ Unpause<\/strong> from the Action menu, or by selecting the tag and changing its status using the category header.<\/p>\n

    2. Edit folder<\/h3>\n

    You can change the folder assignment of a single item via the Action<\/strong> \/ Edit Folder<\/strong> option. You can change the folder assignment of multiple folders at once by selecting them first (by clicking their respective checkboxes), and then choosing edit folder<\/strong> from the category header.<\/p>\n

    When you choose to edit a folder assignment, a new overlay will pop up. If you chose Edit Folder<\/strong> through the Action<\/strong> menu, then you\u2019ll see the current folder for the item in bold font (or (none)<\/strong> if the item doesn\u2019t belong to a folder). By selecting a folder in the list of folders, all the selected items will be added to this folder.<\/p>\n

    3. Rename item<\/h3>\n

    You can change the name of any item by simply editing the text in the text field of the Name<\/strong> column. All changed names are shown in bold<\/strong> font.<\/p>\n

    4. Edit JSON<\/h3>\n

    You can edit the raw JSON<\/strong> of any item by selecting Edit JSON<\/strong> from the Action<\/strong> menu.<\/p>\n

    NOTE!<\/strong> This is completely at your own risk. If the JSON has even a single field in the wrong place, a required field missing, or a misconfigured value, the item will not update. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the resource requirements of the GTM API: tags<\/a>, triggers<\/a>, and variables<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Note also that any changes you make to the JSON will be overwritten by other changes you make via the Workspace mode UI. So if you, for example, change the name of the item in the JSON to \u201cNew name\u201d, but then you type \u201cSome other name\u201d into the name field, the final value will be \u201cSome other name\u201d.<\/p>\n

    \"Edit<\/p>\n

    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The Edit JSON<\/strong> makes use of the open-source jsoneditor<\/a> tool.<\/p>\n

    Reset changes<\/h3>\n

    You can reset<\/strong> any changes made in Workspace mode<\/strong> by choosing Reset changes<\/strong> from the Action<\/strong> menu, or the respective selection in the category header when you\u2019ve selected one or more items.<\/p>\n

    Do note that Reset changes<\/strong> only applies to changes made in Workspace mode. It won\u2019t reset any changes you\u2019ve made to the workspace in the Google Tag Manager UI.<\/p>\n

    Update the workspace<\/h2>\n

    Once you\u2019re ready to update the workspace with the changes you\u2019ve made, click the green Update workspace<\/strong> button, and a new overlay will pop open. There will be a list of all the changes you\u2019ve made. Once you\u2019re ready, click the green Update<\/strong> button to start the update process.<\/p>\n

    The update will process each item one at a time, and once the update is complete, a green checkmark will appear next to the item. Any items that failed to update (due to e.g. JSON errors) will have a red cross next to them.<\/p>\n

    Once the update is complete, you must<\/strong> reload the page. Otherwise the workspace loaded in Workspace mode will not be synchronised with the latest changes you just updated the workspace with.<\/p>\n

    Summary<\/h2>\n

    These were the main features of Workspace mode. I will be adding new stuff to it over time, but I won\u2019t update this article to reflect the new additions. Instead, I recommend you follow the Release notes & User guide<\/a> as that will (hopefully) always be up-to-date with the latest features.<\/p>\n
