This remarkable undersea tunnel has been hailed as the \u201cBest Project of the Year\u201d by ENR<\/i><\/a>, the influential American engineering journal, for its innovative use of cutting-edge technology and unprecedented construction methods. But what does it take to pull off such an extraordinary feat? And what are the true implications of this game-changing piece of infrastructure?<\/p>\n

In a region where travel around Dalian Bay once meant winding detours and long delays, the undersea tunnel provides a direct route, transforming a tedious 60-minute journey into a swift five-minute drive. It\u2019s a solution that will not only ease traffic congestion but also act as a vital artery, connecting the city of Dalian to the mainland with unprecedented efficiency.<\/p>\n

To achieve this, engineers constructed 18 immense concrete tubes, each weighing 60,000 tons, using continuously poured concrete. These tubes, divided into seven segments each and containing six traffic lanes, form the backbone of the undersea passage. The sheer scale of the construction is mind-boggling, especially considering the complexity involved in laying these giant segments on the ocean floor, 32 meters below the surface. Sun Zhu, deputy chief engineer for CCCC First Harbor Engineering Co., the company behind the tunnel\u2019s construction, explains in an interview with ENR<\/a>: \u201cThe team conducted an investigation on offshore concrete structures ranging from 15 to 86 years naturally exposed in the cold sea areas of China.\u201d<\/i> This research helped develop a predictive model for the tunnel\u2019s expected 100-year lifespan, ensuring the project\u2019s longevity despite the harsh marine environment.<\/p>\n

Yet, the tunnel\u2019s creation wasn\u2019t without its obstacles. The frigid waters of Dalian Bay, with temperatures near freezing, presented unique challenges that had never been encountered before. Engineers had to develop new technologies to combat the effects of the extreme cold, conducting 20 large-scale experiments to test various materials and methods under these extreme conditions.<\/p>\n

Each of the massive tubes was pre-stressed with cables before being sunk into place, a process that allowed for flexibility when the cables were eventually cut. This innovative approach ensured the tunnel\u2019s stability while navigating the difficult conditions of the seafloor. As Zhu puts it: \u201cThe technological research and development, as well as the preparatory work undertaken in the early stages, played a pivotal role.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n

The project\u2019s incredible speed\u2014just 20 months to install all 18 tubes\u2014shows the efficiency with which this monumental construction was completed. By April 2023, assembly had finished, and by 2024, the tunnel was officially opened to the public, offering a faster, smoother, and more efficient journey for commuters.<\/p>\n
