Rather than focus on a discussion of these issues as the year\u2019s end approaches this blog highlights important aspects from the past year.<\/p>\n<h3><a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Gene editing&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Gene editing is a technique that allows plant breeders to make very specific changes to how a gene functions, meaning that the gene can be changed to express at a higher or lower level. Gene editing technologies include meganucleases, zinc finger nuclease (ZFN), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR).&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/saifood.ca\/glossary\/gene-editing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Gene Editing<\/a> Gains Regulatory Approval in Canada<\/h3>\n<p>Perhaps the leading issue of importance was the May announcement from the <a href=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/animal-health\/livestock-feeds\/regulatory-guidance\/rg-1\/chapter-2#s29c6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feeds Division<\/a> within the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, that the use of gene editing technologies would be viewed as <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Conventional&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Conventional agriculture is agricultural practices which can include the use of agronomic inputs such as synthetic chemicals whether they are pesticides or fertilizers, and they can include treated seeds. Other terms include modern agriculture and industrial farming.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/saifood.ca\/glossary\/conventional\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">conventional<\/a> plant breeding, not requiring additional regulation. This announcement brought the Feeds Division in line with previous announcements by the <a href=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/plant-varieties\/plants-novel-traits\/applicants\/directive-2009-09\/rationale-updated-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CFIA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/food-nutrition\/genetically-modified-foods-other-novel-foods\/scientific-opinion-regulation-gene-edited-plant-products-within-context-division-28-food-drug-regulations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Canada<\/a>. This is tremendously positive news for research and development of new crop, fruit and vegetable varieties in Canada, as it will reduce the time and cost of developing new varieties, allowing farmers to adopt these better varieties more rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>This decision also represents a huge failure for organizations opposed to innovation in agriculture, such as the Canadian <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Biotechnology&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Biotechnology or biotech is a vast range of procedures or technologies which help to modify biological matter. While many view biotechnology with GMOs, but it also includes a long host of technologies in the world of medicine, chemistry, and our everyday lives, such as the biofuels we use.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/saifood.ca\/glossary\/biotechnology\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Biotechnology<\/a> Action Network that has been aggressively lobbying and campaigning for needless and burdensome regulations for gene editing technologies. CBAN has engaged in deliberately spreading false information about gene editing for numerous years, so it\u2019s great to see Canada\u2019s regulatory agencies making decisions based on science, not activist propaganda.<\/p>\n<h3>Canadian Canola and Chinese Trade Disputes<\/h3>\n<p>This fall, China announced it was going to investigate the Canadian canola industry for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/china-commerce-ministry-begins-anti-dumping-investigation-into-canadian-canola-2024-09-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allegedly \u201cdumping\u201d canola<\/a> onto the global market and affecting prices. This is an entirely political response from the Chinese government, as just weeks earlier, the Canadian federal government announced a 100% tariff on Chinese produced electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The dumping probe is simply more political posturing that the Chinese administration is well known for. The Canadian agriculture industry should be increasingly prepared for politics to affect international trade.<\/p>\n<h3>Inflation, Interest Rates, and Food Prices<\/h3>\n<p>With inflation and interest rates continually decreasing, the impacts of both on the agriculture industry and food prices are starting to be marginally positive. The supply chains that were disrupted during Covid and subsequent geo-political events have been overcome and have returned to near normal conditions. This has led to some food product prices not increasing over the past year, while some even witnessed slight decreases. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dal.ca\/sites\/agri-food\/research\/canada-s-food-price-report-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada\u2019s Food Price Report<\/a> is predicting food price increases of <a href=\"https:\/\/saifood.ca\/canada-food-price-report-2025\/\">3-5% for 2025<\/a>, up from 2.5-4.5% for 2024. While relief for consumers won\u2019t be glaringly evident, moving away from previous price increases of 5-7% is good news.<\/p>\n<h3>Global Perspectives on Agricultural Innovation<\/h3>\n<p>I think that the most positive news is what I have gleaned from speaking at numerous events around the world this year. As I write this, I am currently in South Korea, speaking to regulators about the regulation of gene editing technologies. I have previously spoken to audiences in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Florida, Italy, Peru and Switzerland about innovation, regulation, and sustainability. The message I hear from these diverse audiences is a positive one, as regulators are realizing that innovative technologies such as genetic modification and gene editing are safe and provide exceptional economic and environmental benefits and that if food security is to improve in their country then they need to be adopting these technologies. This is wonderfully positive news.<\/p>\n<h3>Gratitude to Agricultural Workers<\/h3>\n<p>Thanks to everyone who has produced food, helped process items into food products and works within agriculture and our food industry!
