I have nothing to add to their summary of her career:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\nMali&#8217;s Coumba Sidibe was a pioneering force behind the<br \/>\nevolution of <i>wassoulou<\/i>, the earthy, propulsive music that first captured the<br \/>\nimagination of west African listeners in the mid-&#8217;70s. A singer of elemental<br \/>\npower, she set the stage for a generation of artists including Oumou Sangar\u00e9,<br \/>\nIssa Bagayogo, and Nahawa Doumbia, although their international fame<br \/>\nconsistently eluded her.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\nBorn in <place w:st=\"on\"><city w:st=\"on\">Koninko<\/city>,<br \/>\n <country-region w:st=\"on\">Mali<\/country-region><\/place> in 1950,<br \/>\nSidibe began singing at regional harvest festivals at the age of seven,<br \/>\nfollowing in the footsteps of her father Diara, a famed dancer and sorcerer<br \/>\nskilled in the ecstatic percussion and dance tradition known as <i>sogoninkun<\/i>, and<br \/>\nher mother, a vocalist of great local renown.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\nThe first female member of l&#8217;Ensemble Instrumental National<br \/>\ndu Mali, a state-sponsored orchestra created to represent the nation&#8217;s<br \/>\nfolkloric traditions, Sidibe exited their ranks in 1977 to team with Alata<br \/>\nBrulaye, the creator of the <i>kamelengon<\/i>, a six-string harp modeled on the sacred<br \/>\n<i>dosongoni<\/i>, an instrument effectively off limits to popular musicians.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\nThe <i>kamelengoni<\/i>&#8216;s\u00a0funky, percussive sound quickly emerged as<br \/>\nthe foundation of the <i>wassoulou <\/i>aesthetic, a neo-traditional style that<br \/>\nthreatened the long-standing cultural dominance of <country-region w:st=\"on\"><place w:st=\"on\">Mali<\/place><\/country-region>&#8216;s <i>jelis<\/i>, the music-making<br \/>\ncaste whose roots date back to the 13th century. While the <i>jelis<\/i> performed<br \/>\ntraditional songs targeted to the wealthy and powerful, the so-called<br \/>\n<i>&#8220;kono&#8221; <\/i>(i.e., the predominantly female &#8220;songbirds&#8221; at the<br \/>\nforefront of the <i>wassoulou <\/i>movement) addressed contemporary themes like romance<br \/>\nand feminism; hits like &#8220;Diya ye Banna&#8221; earned Sidibe the unofficial<br \/>\ntitle &#8220;Queen of Wassoulou,&#8221; and her backing group Le Super Mansa de<br \/>\nWassoulou was the launching pad for future superstars including Sangar\u00e9,<br \/>\narguably the most successful Malian artist of her generation. While a revered<br \/>\nfigure in her homeland, Sidibe never attracted the attention of the world music<br \/>\ncognoscenti, and in the late &#8217;90s she and her family relocated to New York<br \/>\nCity, where she headlined a Sunday night residency at Harlem&#8217;s St. Nick&#8217;s Pub.<br \/>\nSidibe died in <place w:st=\"on\">Brooklyn<\/place> on May 10, 2009.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kudos to The Lost Maestros for posting this wonderful video (from World Service&#8216;s YouTube channel) of the Malian diva Coumba Sidibe.
