With the support of a friendly legislature and an overwhelmingly sympathetic Supreme Court, Bukele was able to leverage extraordinary executive powers to dismantle the brutal street gangs that once terrorized the nation. These gangs, resembling paramilitary groups, had controlled large swaths of the country, extorting money, intimidating citizens, and essentially governing entire communities.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2022, a state of emergency has been in effect, which has seen more than 83,000 gang members arrested. This crackdown is aggressive, involving swift, forceful action by police and military forces. Many have been detained without due process\u2014an aspect that has drawn heavy criticism from human rights organizations, yet the public response has been overwhelmingly positive. <em><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s a new dawn,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> says one local resident of San Salvador. <em><strong>\u201cI never thought I\u2019d see the day when I could walk these streets without fear.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>\u201cIn 2015, the streets of San Salvador were ruled by violence,\u201d<\/i><\/strong> says another long-time resident, <strong><i>\u201cnow they\u2019re ruled by peace.\u201d<\/i><\/strong> This is not just a rhetorical shift\u2014it\u2019s a profound reality that has made life in El Salvador more bearable for its citizens.
