{"id":102764,"date":"2025-02-22T04:57:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-22T04:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/google-analytics-for-mobile-apps-getting-shut-down\/"},"modified":"2025-02-22T04:57:48","modified_gmt":"2025-02-22T04:57:48","slug":"google-analytics-for-mobile-apps-getting-shut-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=102764","title":{"rendered":"Google Analytics For Mobile Apps Getting Shut Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>If you\u2019re a user of the <strong>free<\/strong> version of <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.google.com\/\">Google Analytics<\/a>, and if you have a free Google Analytics property collecting hits <strong>exclusively<\/strong> from the Google Analytics Services SDK (<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/android\/v4\/\">Android<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/ios\/v3\/\">iOS<\/a>), you might have recently received an email that looks like this (emphasis mine):<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 3268 \/ 736;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/12\/google-analytics-for-mobile-sunset.jpg\" title=\"Google Analytics for mobile sunset\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"736\" width=\"3268\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2018\/12\/google-analytics-for-mobile-sunset.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Google Analytics for mobile sunset\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a nutshell, <strong>Google is now starting the process of deprecating the \u201clegacy\u201d Google Analytics for Mobile Apps<\/strong>. This covers all data collection SDKs that do not have the word \u201cFirebase\u201d in them. As such, also the \u201cGoogle Analytics\u201d tags in Google Tag Manager for mobile apps will be impacted.<\/p>\n<p>Google is most likely doing this because they want to focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/firebase.google.com\/docs\/analytics\/\">Firebase Analytics<\/a> as the new paradigm for Google\u2019s mobile app analytics.<\/p>\n<p>For reference, here\u2019s the email body:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Dear Google Analytics customer,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>You are receiving this email because you are in the first wave of customers who have been identified as users of the older style of Google Analytics for mobile apps reporting and the Google Analytics Services SDK. Specifically, we are notifying you regarding your Google Analytics property(ies) (, ID: UA-XXXXXX-YY: ).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We want to let you know that in <strong>October 2019<\/strong> we will begin to <strong>sunset our Google Analytics for mobile apps reporting and the Google Analytics Services SDK<\/strong>. We are investing our resources in the latest style of app reporting in Google Analytics that works in conjunction with Firebase \u2013 Google\u2019s integrated app developer platform. As such, the following will take place:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2019, we will begin to decommission properties that receive data <strong>exclusively<\/strong> from the Google Analytics Services SDK.<\/li>\n<li>Data collection and processing for such properties will stop on <strong>October 31, 2019<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Reporting access through our UI and API access will remain available for these properties\u2019 historical data until <strong>January 31, 2020<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>After our service is fully turned down, these properties will <strong>no longer be accessible via our Google Analytics UI or API<\/strong>, and their <strong>data will be removed from Google Analytics servers<\/strong>. You will receive further notification when this time nears.<\/li>\n<li>At this time, <strong>no Analytics 360 properties<\/strong> are impacted by these changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We want to give you plenty of time to make the transition. The good news is that the latest solution using the Firebase SDK is even more intuitive and includes free and unlimited event reporting to meet the needs of app-centric businesses. We\u2019ve invested heavily to make this solution best-in-class, with new features and capabilities rolling-out continually. Additionally, our offering is closely integrated with other Google products and features to help grow your app business like Crashlytics, AdMob and Remote Config.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Getting started with our latest app reporting features is simple and straightforward. Here\u2019s how. For additional information on our new Google Analytics app reporting, visit the Help Center.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Thank you,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Google Analytics Team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>                <span class=\"simmer\"><br \/>\n  <span class=\"close\">X<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    <span class=\"fa fa-md fa-bell\"\/><br \/>\n    <strong>The Simmer Newsletter<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Subscribe to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/newsletter\/\">Simmer newsletter<\/a> to get the latest news and content from Simo Ahava into your email inbox!\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-this-means\">What this means<\/h2>\n<p>As you can see from the email, only <strong>free Google Analytics properties<\/strong> are impacted. Furthermore, only those properties that collect data <strong>exclusively<\/strong> with the mobile analytics tracking schema will be impacted.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure what the actual triggers for identifying these hits will be. Most likely GA will look for specific dimensions being sent with the request to <code>\/collect<\/code>, and use that to determine whether or not the hit was a hit intended to be collected in mobile app views.<\/p>\n<p>This has two implications.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>If you are using <strong>Google Analytics 360<\/strong> properties, then you are off the hook, for now. There has been no indication of a deprecation timeline for GA360.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>It <em>looks like<\/em> one way to avoid the impact even if using free Google Analytics is to send the occasional <strong>web hit<\/strong> to the property collecting the mobile app data. This means sending hits with the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/gtagjs\/\">JavaScript SDK<\/a>, or building a <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/protocol\/v1\/\">Measurement Protocol request<\/a> that includes web dimensions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>UPDATE!<\/strong> It has been confirmed that the step (2) above will <strong>not<\/strong> work if you\u2019ve already received the deprecation message. In other words, if your property has already been flagged for deprecation, no amount of trickery will prevent that &#8211; it\u2019s on its way out.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of these implications is one to swear by, however. There\u2019s no telling if a similar timeline for GA360 will be revealed in the coming months, and sending web hits to the mobile app property might be something that won\u2019t work down the line, either.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"some-thoughts\">Some thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, on a personal note, I\u2019m very glad about this announcement. I\u2019ve considered the \u201cmobile version\u201d of Google Analytics to be flawed for a long time, as it relies on the paradigm outlined by web data collection too much. It\u2019s difficult trying to pigeon hole the fluctuations of mobile app usage into the constricted schema of GA with its screenviews, sessions, and campaign attribution.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the push to Firebase won\u2019t be gentle. It\u2019s a very different approach to analytics, as it revolves around the duality of <strong>Users<\/strong> and <strong>Events<\/strong>. Thus, it harks back to hit stream analytics which, while providing more flexibility to analysis itself, does make simple exploratory analytics more difficult to do than what you might be used to with the Google Analytics UI and reporting API. The Firebase team has been working hard to make the user interface more intuitive, so usability is something they are certainly paying attention to.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Firebase has some <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/firebase\/answer\/7397304?hl=en\">strict quotas<\/a> for custom parameters in data collection. This looks crippling especially for those of us used to the 200 Custom Dimensions provided by Google Analytics 360. I assume that Firebase will need to address these limitations before offering their solution as a migration-ready upgrade from the legacy GA mobile tracking.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"going-forward\">Going forward<\/h2>\n<p>For now, I recommend that you start working on a migration plan for your mobile Google Analytics tracking, even if you are using Google Analytics 360. Moving from GA to Firebase isn\u2019t as easy as flipping a switch, and you should familiarize with the latter as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been using the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/tagmanager\/answer\/7035192?hl=en\">latest version of Google Tag Manager for mobile<\/a>, the migration path (at least with regard to implementation) is a bit smoother, since you\u2019ll already be using Firebase Analytics for dispatching the events. But if you\u2019re anything like me, you\u2019ve prioritized Google Analytics tag setups over the detail of the Firebase events themselves, so you\u2019ll most likely need to address the implementation anyway.<\/p>\n<p>While working on the migration plan, it\u2019s a good idea to look at other players in the field, too. I\u2019d be remiss not to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/snowplowanalytics.com\/\">Snowplow Analytics<\/a>, since its approach to the hit stream model might be very tempting to explore while thinking of alternatives to GA.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re in for interesting times, as this announcement will certainly impact lots of users.
