Also, if you believe the first pizzeria in the U.S. was Lombardo\u2019s in New York (I sure did), Peter has some news for you. And that he got death threats for the review (which I think Paddington would have frowned upon?). Anyway, the <em>New York Times<\/em> has an interesting piece about the history of the film and its legacy, including that film critic\u2019s story. (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/17\/movies\/paddington-2-hugh-grant.html?unlocked_article_code=1.x04._Z82.BPLDTg4OCeKm&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIFT LINK<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I saw this via Kottke.org last week: <a href=\"https:\/\/weeks.ginatrapani.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gina Trapani made a map of her life where each week is a little box<\/strong><\/a>, with big events noted (first concert, first computer, X-Files pilot airs, etc.). It is so cool, and thankfully it would take a bit of coding to recreate it, otherwise I\u2019d be tempted to spend 25 hours making my own (whew).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I haven\u2019t eaten at a McDonald\u2019s in years, but have fond memories from my childhood, and I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s nostalgia making me want to buy this 420-page, $50 coffee table book, <em>McAtlas<\/em>, by James Beard Award-winning photographer and writer Gary He, or what (maybe I have a coffee table book problem). Or if I admire the quest to visit McDonald\u2019s franchises all around the world. Or if it\u2019s just a really cool-looking book. <a href=\"https:\/\/rolandopujol.substack.com\/p\/mcatlas-a-photographers-global-odyssey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>But this is a fun, brief interview the author did with Rolando Pujol<\/strong><\/a> (who also appears in the pizza YouTube video above).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I have been trying to put my finger on why algorithms just don\u2019t work that well to introduce me to new music\/books\/videos\/shows\/whatever, and I think lots of people are having the same feeling. This <em>Atlantic<\/em> piece about the new book Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist, dives into a bit of it, but also captures what I think many of us have been feeling: \u201cLike so many other products influenced by machine learning, Spotify\u2019s playlists can\u2019t generate something new\u2014say, a wholly fresh and unheard sound\u2014for its users. They instead offer the flash of recognition, rather than the mind-scrambling revelation that comes only when you hear something you\u2019d never expected.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2025\/02\/mood-machine-liz-pelly-spotify-review\/681636\/?gift=kZAb-CYAytdK21NICp8tcguGX__CB5Z13nnPiNFZjao&amp;utm_source=copy-link&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>GIFT LINK<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I\u2019m about a week out from my 52K trail race in New Zealand on March 1, and although my \u201ctraining\u201d has been less than optimal (illness, snow, blah blah blah, it\u2019s never been optimal anyway), I am experimenting with some gut training on my long days. My version of it, as a very abbreviated overview of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.precisionhydration.com\/performance-advice\/nutrition\/how-to-train-your-gut\/?code=SEMIRAD&amp;utm_source=semirad&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=semirad&amp;utm_id=semirad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>this gut training article by newsletter sponsor Precision Fuel &amp; Hydration<\/strong><\/a>, is: Try to take down double the calories I traditionally\/naively have in the past, which means powering down a 360-calorie PF90 gel in two big gulps, one gulp every 30 minutes. I\u2019m happy to report that it\u2019s going just fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you start reading this McSweeney\u2019s piece, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsweeneys.net\/articles\/its-a-snow-day-welcome-to-hell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s A Snow Day, Welcome To Hell,\u201d<\/strong><\/a> about kids staying home from school and how parents should manage it, I would encourage you to read it all the way through.
